Few Asian Americans Reach Top Law Positions, Study Finds

Asian Americans are the largest minority group at major law firms, yet few reach top positions, according to a recent study conducted by a California Supreme Court justice and Yale University law students.

Asian Americans make up 5.6 percent of the population and an even bigger percentage of law school student bodies. But members of the fastest-growing U.S. racial group seldom reach the top of the legal profession as judges, U.S. attorneys, elected state prosecutors, or private practice partners or associates, the study found.

Asian Americans “have a foot in the door in virtually every sector of the legal profession,” California Justice Goodwin Liu said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. “The question now is how wide that door’s going to swing open for them.”

Liu is one of three Asian Americans on California’s seven-member Supreme Court. But he said this ratio is extremely unusual, compared with courts elsewhere in the U.S.

According to the AP, the study compiled research from recent years and found:

  • Three of the 94 U.S. attorneys and four of the country’s nearly 2,500 elected state prosecutors were Asian American.

  • There were 26 active Asian American judges among more than 850 federal judicial positions. Two percent of almost 10,300 state trial and appellate court judges who were surveyed were Asian American.

  • Asian Americans were the largest minority group at major law firms but had the highest attrition rates and lowest ratio of partners to associates among all racial groups.

The numbers indicate that the law profession is affected by the “bamboo ceiling,” a term that refers to the underrepresentation of Asian Americans in leadership positions. Silicon Valley’s top jobs also are underrepresented, with Asian Americans making up 27 percent of the tech industry’s professionals, but less than 14 percent of executives, according to a 2015 Ascend report.

The Harvard Business Review suggested two stereotypes about Asian Americans were to blame for the low number of executives ― that they are seen as threatening and lacking social skills necessary for leadership.

Liu’s study surveyed more than 600 Asian American lawyers. More than 80 percent reported experiencing implicit bias on the workplace.

“For Asian Americans in the legal profession, the milestones have been significant, as have been the challenges,” Eric Chung, a Yale law student involved in the study, said in November. “To consider where we go from here requires understanding where we are now.”

A New Year, A New Chapter, A New You

2017-01-16-1484601083-5847386-hrdvsypffasaustinschmid.jpg

The start of the New Year has me thinking about endings, beginnings, and the paths we take to lead us from one chapter to the next. How did you choose your direction? How did you decide to be a botanist, a nurse, or a stay-at-home Dad? For some, life’s course comes naturally–as for those who know what they want to be as early as high school. For others, those decisions come hard–as for those of us who struggle to find our way until a midlife crisis leads us from one place to another.

For me, the certainty that I would wind up as a writer became apparent when I was quite young–though other ideas cropped up along the way. At one point, I dreamed of being a psychiatrist who could help people heal from the disease my mother suffered from. At another, I was sure I would be a horse breeder, spending my life on a farm with all sorts of animals, as I had at summer camp. But the passion for writing won out during my freshman year in college, and when I turned twenty-one I started my first book.

After two decades of writing fiction, at forty years old, I discovered–to my surprise–that I had something important to say about myself. I had a new grasp on all that had happened to me and all that I, at last, understood about my own history. A strong urge to express these revelations and my conclusions about them led me to memoir. I decided to jump genres.

Memoir requires a particular kind of courage–a willingness to open up emotionally and go public with your understanding of your life, rather than putting your experiences and ideas into the mouths of imaginary characters. This sort of writing is a challenge for me in many ways. First and foremost, it’s about “getting over” myself and learning how to be humble. Then there is conquering the fear of being vulnerable with an unknown host of others. Last but not least, there is the complicated matter of writing about people who are so integral to the experiences I am sharing with the world.

2017-01-16-1484581907-2120275-xzw66yayvbaalexwigan.jpg

I get questions from readers about all these issues regularly, and my answer to them is always the same simple truth: I am driven to reach out to others via what I have learned through my own life. I can’t flinch from writing about it. I often receive emails (or sometimes letters) from those who tell me that Searching for Mercy Street helped them to understand their parents better and to forgive the inevitable errors made while raising them. And others write to say that Half in Love has helped them to understand more about depression and suicide, or to move them to seek medical help, or to speak more frankly about their emotions with family–or just to take the risk of reaching out to me, a total stranger who might not answer, even though I seem to be a kindred spirit.

Every one of these reactions makes the fear of baring my soul to the world worthwhile, and this is what fulfills me. It puts into perspective any desire for better sales figures or stellar reviews. In the end, affecting other people with my writing is all that matters to me, and I’m grateful that my life allows me to pursue such a goal.

I have known many who have scrambled for a long time before being able to make a mid-life decision to go in a new direction. One who left a flourishing law practice to write; one who ditched the security of a being a physician to take the risk of becoming a Silicon Valley entrepreneur; one who took years away from her career in journalism to sail the world with her husband and young children; one who decided to become a stay-at-home Dad so that his wife could pursue her dream; one who conquered depression over being childless and adopted instead; one who went back to school at age forty to become a minister.

The changes these people created for themselves required enormous bravery and a willingness to take a leap of faith. I admire them immensely. They gave me the guts to make yet another shift in my professional life, one over which I had been hesitating. Although it was not dissatisfaction that pushed me to leave the genre that I loved, however temporarily, at the outset of 2015 I tackled fiction once again. I chose to start a novel in spite of my insecurity and fear about critics who sometimes judge that my memoirs are my best efforts. But, of course, the decision was softened by the fact that I was lucky enough to be able to continue using my own personal stories in my newsletters, blogs and articles.

We might all look for inspiration, as I did twice, in the examples of the others I’ve written about above–particularly if we are unhappy with wherever life has led us thus far. The advent of a new year is the perfect time to try something fresh. Summon up your courage and unleash whatever it is that fires you up.

How to Raise Kids Who Can ‘Love and Be Loved’

Forget about an apple a day keeping the medical doctor away.

If you want to do something to ensure your kids experience backed-by-research benefits like:

· Higher self esteem

· Better parent-child communication

· Improved academic performance

· Fewer psychological and behavior problems and

· Better coping skills

be sure to add copious amounts of affection and acceptance to the healthy foodstuffs you dole out daily.

Need another reason? Parental warmth, affection and acceptance not only foster your child’s psychological development while they’re under your roof, it also impacts the quality of loving relationships they will have as adults.

Learning to “love and be loved” is a fundamental part of being human for all of us. From it comes profound purpose for our lives. It’s what gives us the capacity to go out into the world, confident in our ability to navigate and perhaps even mitigate the complexities of daily life through our personal and professional contributions. For that, we need a secure attachment bond.

Let’s start at the beginning….

Early Attachment – Why it Matters

From the moment of birth, the attachment bond a child develops with the primary caregiver (usually, but not always, the mother) becomes their framework for emotional wellbeing.

Absolutely key to healthy development, the attachment bond is essentially a child’s ability to feel responded to by the parent or caregiver. When a child’s needs are consistently met at the early stages of life, parent and child grow to trust the other. A secure attachment based on that feeling is what enables kids to separate and differentiate when developmentally appropriate.

Without it, kids can develop what’s called “learned helplessness,” which makes them (as children and later, without intervention, as adults) believe that adverse outcomes are not only to be expected, but also are not controllable or changeable by their own agency.

I can’t overstate how critical parental affection and acceptance are for helping your children develop a secure attachment. Making them feel important, special and cared about – warts and all – is like dressing them in a Teflon® suit that makes it is safe to experiment, to express themselves and to imagine their potential.

Best yet, even when those experiments fail…

that creative expression doesn’t merit an audience beyond the living room…

or their ideas to save the world are wildly immature and impractical…

kids with a secure attachment know intrinsically they are still OK – great, even! Their worth and value isn’t defined by what they “do.” It’s their existential “being” that makes them worthy of their parents’ – and others’ – love.

What Does Affection and Acceptance Look Like?

Affection needs to be both broadly defined and responsive to your particular children’s needs and preferences.

Mine? All three love and appreciate physical affection. But not every family – or every kid in every family – is the cuddly type. Be aware of the differences and uniqueness of each of your children. Give them warmth and affection that is meaningful to them – not that which comes easiest to you.

While hugs, kisses and reassuring pats on the back are certainly meaningful demonstrations of love, there are a lot of non-physical actions that express parental love:

· Relax on the couch and read or watch TV together

· Sit with them and talk about their day (be sure you’re focus is on them, not on prepping dinner)

· Build or create something together like a puzzle or model

· Put a love note in a lunchbox or surprise them with a note on the bathroom mirror that they’ll see as soon as they get up

· Acknowledge the characteristics that make them unique – not just those that replicate traits you like about yourself

· When kids leave for overnight camp or college, hide small gifts and notes in their luggage

· Thank them – even when they’re just doing their chores

· Tell them, “I’m looking forward to seeing you after school,” so they come to know you think of them even when they’re not around

Parental warmth and affection is an all-the-time activity, NOT JUST WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE IT. (Excuse the virtual screaming, but this is important.)

We all get angry and frustrated with our kids, sometimes justifiably, sometimes not. But there is never a time when it’s appropriate for a parent to withhold love and acceptance from a child. We need to model that it’s possible to both love our children and be furious with them.

Angry kids often say, “I hate you!” to their parents. Rather than hurling a similar invective, parents need to say, “I understand. I may not like the behaviors I’m seeing, but I still love you.”

If you have teens, you may have noticed that they’ve become less amenable to affection – particularly from the opposite sex parent. But I promise you that teens don’t age out of the need for your warmth and affection. This is especially true when they act in ways that make them hard to love. So the next time your sullen and sarcastic teen starts to steal out the door after a fight, remember to say, “I love you, be safe.” Those moments matter.

No parent is immune to lapses on occasion. In Chicago Tribune columnist’s Heidi Stevens’ recent essay, she admits she’d noticed that the easy delight she’d expressed when her kids were little ones was starting to become “more connected to performance” now that were school-aged. Her personal pledge to “light up” every time she sees her kids is something all of us can emulate.

Why Modeling Adult Affection and Care Matters

Think back to when you were a child. Do you remember seeing your parents hug and kiss, crack one another up, or maybe even dance together? On the surface, you may have felt anything from embarrassment to delight, but at a deeper level seeing one’s parents express affection for one another makes kids feel safe and loved.

Unbeknownst to you – and maybe even to your parents – they were also modeling what to aspire to when it comes to adult relationships.

Here’s the thing: It’s easy for parents to forget that it only works if we model it. We have an assumed parity regarding roles and responsibilities (e.g., you cook, I clean). “Thanks, dear,” is understood. But kids aren’t privy to your adult conversations when you divvy up chores…or the bedtime chats when you take time to connect. So if kids don’t hear or witness expressions of appreciation and love between their parents, they either presume they don’t happen – or that they aren’t central to a healthy relationship.

That’s why the tacit must become explicit.

Here’s extra incentive.

Children grow up to treat their partners as they saw their parents treat one another. If we’re inattentive, dismissive or non-affectionate to our mates – intentional or not – that becomes our kids’ blueprint of what to expect when they partner up. And who wants that for their children? No one I know.

So what is appropriate behavior for parents to model?

· Stop what you’re doing and greet your partner when she or he walks in the door

· Display affection (hugs, kisses, even just a big smile)

· Be courteous to one another; say “Please” and “Thank you”

· Let your kids hear you acknowledge one another’s successes

· Express empathy when a parent has had a rough day

· Communicate your appreciation for your partner’s small kindnesses in front of the kids Still not convinced? Remember, the goal of parents is to launch their kids after 18 years. The partner? That’s the one we want to keep! So not only does expressing love and appreciation for our partners help our kids, it keeps adult love connections alive as well.

Trust me, there’s enough love to go around. Make sure you express it daily and with gusto!

Judd Apatow Thinks Trump Will Run The Country Like It’s ‘The Apprentice’

Judd Apatow, frequent Donald Trump basher, is opening up about what he thinks life will be like once the president-elect takes office.

In an interview with The New York Times, the “Trainwreck” director suggested Trump will run the country like the reality competition show “The Apprentice,” which he so famously hosted.

“I watched an enormous amount of ‘The Apprentice,’” Apatow said. “Donald Trump sits in his office. He sends his kids to watch the teams do their missions. Then they come back and tell him what they think of it and then he makes an impulsive decision based on the information that Donald Jr. or Ivanka give him. That’s how he’s running the country.”

Apatow noted that he wasn’t particularly surprised when Trump won the election because, as he has stated before: the funniest candidate always wins

“I said it as a joke, but I think there’s something to it,” he said. “Reagan was funny. Bill Clinton was funny. Bush was funnier than Gore. Obama was funnier than probably anybody who’s ever run for office.”

In terms of Trump, Apatow thinks the former “Apprentice” host “has a demented sense of humor” and “is way funnier than Hillary Clinton.”

Apatow, a Clinton supporter, did make a point of expressing his thoughts about where the former secretary of state went wrong in her campaign, saying she “made a few enormous mistakes.”

“One of those mistakes, to me, was that you can’t get paid that much for speeches and go back into politics,” he said. “That has to be your victory lap — you cash in, you do the speeches and you’re done.”

With Trump being sworn into office on Friday, Apatow plans to alter the way he opposes the president-elect.

“I don’t think it serves a purpose to be against him,” he said. “It only serves a purpose to fight issue by issue.”

To read more from Apatow’s interview, head over to The New York Times

Where is HOME?

A good friend of mine shared a question posed by guitarist, Chris Wood on her Facebook page:

“Bob Dylan described eloquently how his music has been the quest to get home. Now as much as ever feels like a good time to ask you; what feels like home to you? Are you there already or do you still have a way to go?”

On the same day, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released a new song called “Castle on the Hill”. The song retraces the singer’s youth, returning to his former home and recalling his memories en route.

I grew up in a small rural town called Penrith in Cumbria, England. It’s a tourist town situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park. I return periodically but I’ve realised over the years how my fond memories are stored in music rather than the place itself.

I consider Penrith to be my home but every time I return I feel more distant, more disconnected. Maybe what I search for is my youth – to remember Penrith as I did back then and feel the way the town made me feel then – but lately it seems empty, soulless. The only way I can get that feeling back is by listening to music that reminds me of when it was my home. That works, then I miss it, then it feels like home again.

When my mind traces back through all the places I’ve lived, they each have songs associated with the memories. In that sense, each place feels like home. There’s a nostalgic pull to every dwelling for different reasons and different songs. For some, scents can also trigger memories of places they consider home.

But where is home? Is it the house or town you grew up in or the house or town where you raised your family? Maybe it’s the place you felt most loved or perhaps the place you gave most love to. How does our heart identify home?

For many, home is more than a memory. For refugees, home is their country; for the street children in Brazil and India, home is wherever they feel safest.

So are we all constantly striving to find home? Do creative people, like Bob Dylan, find sanctuary in their work?

I’ve spent hours pondering an answer to Chris Wood’s question and feel no definitive place as my home. The house where I live now, and watched my family grow, is my home but Penrith is my home town. Maybe I am still on that quest to go home, but I fear that home was a moment in time…

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what you consider home and why, so please comment below.

Democrats Lead Nationwide Day Of Rallies In Defense Of Obamacare

Supporters of the Affordable Care Act gathered to protest the health care law’s repeal in rallies across the country on Sunday.

The demonstrations were in response to an appeal by Democratic leaders in Congress for a day of action against ACA repeal, the defunding of Planned Parenthood and other policies promoted by the incoming Donald Trump administration.

Perhaps the highest-profile gathering was a rally at Macomb County Community College in Warren, Michigan, that drew thousands of people. Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and several other members of Congress addressed the large crowd that had waited in long lines in below-freezing weather to attend the event. Many who have received health insurance thanks to the ACA shared their emotional stories as well.

When Sanders finally took the stage after his colleagues, the roar of the audience and chants of “Bernie, Bernie Bernie” made it clear that for many in the crowd, the Vermont senator was the main attraction. Sanders’ political action nonprofit, “Our Revolution,” live-streamed the event on YouTube and Facebook.

“This is the wealthiest country in the history of the world,” Sanders said. “It is time we got our national priorities right. The United States today and I hope everybody in America understands it: We are the only major country on Earth not to guarantee health care to all people as a right!”

True to his democratic socialist form, Sanders, who won an upset victory against Hillary Clinton in the Great Lakes State presidential primary, went beyond defending the ACA.

“So our job today is to defend the Affordable Care Act. Our job tomorrow is to create a Medicare-for-all, single-payer system,” he exhorted the crowd.

There were some 70 similar rallies across the country, according to Sanders. Photos on social media show significant crowds in Portland, Maine; Richmond, Virginia; Tampa, Florida; Boston, New York City and many other metropolises.

Other grassroots efforts suggest that the prospect of the ACA being repealed is finally mobilizing Democrats and their allies to take unified, concerted action.

The progressive organizations MoveOn.org, the Working Families Party and People’s Action reported that they were holding 500 “resist Trump” meetings on Sunday.

And on Saturday, over 100 people angry about ACA repeal packed Republican Rep. Mike Coffman’s constituent meeting in Aurora, Colorado. It was a scene that resembled past politically effective moments of protest, including the raucous anti-ACA town hall meetings in the summer of 2009.

Coffman only let people speak to him in groups of four at a time, then sneaked out a side entrance earlier than the event officially ended.

Head over here to learn about protest events scheduled for inauguration day this Friday.

Why Donald Trump Attacked John Lewis (And Why He Will Always Attack People Who ‘Wound’ Him)

Why Donald Trump Attacked John Lewis
(And Why He Will ALWAYS Attack People Who “Wound” Him)
by Richard Greene with Dr. Lynne Meyer, PhD

*Note: I am re-posting the “Why Donald Trump Attacked Meryl Streep (And Why He Will ALWAYS Attack People Who “Wound” Him) post from January 10. . . . and will continue to do the same and just replace the names until the press and the country understand four critical things:

1.  He will ALWAYS attack. This is what we have to look forward to for the next 4 years.
2.  He attacks because he has serious, incurable, untreatable and progressive “Narcissistic Personality Disorder”, a “Cluster B” personality disorder characterized by extreme sensitivity brought on by an almost total lack of self-esteem and self worth.  Donald Trump, himself, told us this. In his famous interview with Megan Kelly the following words came out of his mouth, not a Psychiatrist’s.  “When I’m wounded I go after people hard to try to ‘unwound’ myself.”  He also said “I view myself as a person and like everybody else, I’m fighting for survival.”
3. This man, with this need to “unwound” himself, “fight for survival” and attack anyone and everyone, including a man who marched with Martin Luther King two days before Martin Luther King’s birthday, will have sole, unimpeded, “anytime he wants” ability to destroy our relationships with any world leader who hurts his feelings, destroy our relationship with any country and destroy the entirety of civilization with his exclusive control over 7,000 nuclear warheads.
4. He is not fit to be President of The United States and Commander-in-Chief and must be impeached or otherwise removed from office as soon as practically possible.

Why Donald Trump Attacked Meryl Streep
(And Why He Will ALWAYS Attack People Who “Wound” Him)
by Richard Greene with Dr. Lynne Meyer, PhD

Maybe it took Meryl Streep for people to finally get it.

According to virtually every Psychiatrist, Psychologist and mental health professional that we know or have interviewed, who are experienced in this field, Donald Trump has a serious mental condition called “Narcissistic Personality Disorder” (NPD), a rare, incurable, largely untreatable, progressive disorder that is incompatible with being President of The United States and, especially, Commander-in-Chief.

He will always attack anyone prominent who attacks him

Always.

Why?

Because, while he talks constantly about being “strong” and “tough” the reality is that Donald Trump, because of his serious condition, is too sensitive.

Because the attacks on him hurt too much.

Way too much.

He even said it himself in an interview with Megan Kelly on Fox News: http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/trump-i-wound-people-to-unwound-myself/article/2591620

“When I’m wounded, I go after people hard and I try to unwound myself.”

Simple words of even mild criticism wound Donald Trump.  They cut through him like a knife.

Simple words of even mild criticism trigger the ever-present (but oft covered up) deep feelings of insecurity and an almost total lack of self-worth.

This is true for EVERYONE with NPD (as discussed in detail in the previous article, “Is Donald Trump Mentally Ill?” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/richard-greene/is-donald-trump-mentally_b_13693174.html

Handing over the Presidency and the entire United States Military to this man is like a 747 Pilot handing over the controls of the airplane to someone who is a known alcoholic.

Or a surgeon giving the scalpel in the middle of a long, complicated surgery to someone who is prone to frequent epileptic fits..

When “attacked”, a person without this personality disorder has the ability to put that criticism into a larger context. People with NPD literally do not. Their system gets so highly stressed by the attack they can’t focus on anything else.

A healthy person would say, “Oh, Meryl Streep has an opinion. I don’t agree with it. Now I’m going to focus on something else because I am a world leader and have many other important things to focus on.”

But someone with NPD is so stressed, because of their fragility, that they can’t have these logical, rational thoughts, and can’t even focus on other things. Instead, they think ”I must devalue her because I feel devalued” and, therefore, the “overrated” comment and every other devaluation of so very many who have criticized Donald Trump.

According to universally accepted research there is a pattern that those suffering from NPD follow virtually every time they are criticized or attacked:

1. They Devalue.
2. They Threaten.
3. They  Retaliate.

Devaluing is diplomatically and militarily dangerous with other world leaders who, themselves, may be unstable or have enormous egos, or even NPD, and threatening and retaliating have obvious potential for very real global crisis.

And, at this point, even though Mr. Trump has never formally laid down on a Psychiatrist’s couch (something that NPD sufferers are almost never willing to do), we’ve seen that these three reactions to criticism or challenge are the very, and proudly held, modus operandi of our President–Elect throughout his business career and personal life.

How many people has he devalued?  “Little Marco”, “Lying Ted”, “Low Energy Jeb”, “Crooked Hillary”, Miss Universe, all of his female accusers, Alec Baldwin. China, Meryl Streep and so many others.  He’s not immature. This is a textbook symptom of NPD.

How many people has he threatened?  Threatening people with lawsuits is part of his business model.  As Commander-in-Chief he will have the entirety of The United States Military and 7,000 nuclear warheads instead of just a lawsuit.

How many people has he retaliated against?  Actually filing lawsuits is also part of his business model.  As Commander-in-Chief he will have the entirety of The United States Military and 7,000 nuclear warheads to use to, indeed, retaliate.

And no one – not The Secretary of Defense, not The Vice-President, not Congress, not The Joint Chiefs of Staff  – are able to stop President Trump from launching a military or even a nuclear retaliation if he, in his sole discretion, wants to do it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/richard-greene/dear-electors-donald-trum_b_13679096.html

It will never be different. It will never change.  When “wounded” by criticism Donald Trump will “try to unwound” himself by lashing out. Donald Trump will not “grow up” as the Vice-President suggested.  Donald Trump will NEVER be more “Presidential” as many have begged.

And the consequences could be horrifying.

What will happen, for example, WHEN (not if) Kim Jong-Un or Vladimir Putin or the leader of Iran or Pakistan or ISIS criticizes or challenges President Donald Trump?

On January 20, 2017 Donald J. Trump will have sole, unilateral, full, exclusive, anytime he wants authority to direct 2 million American servicemen and the high alert portions of a 7,000 nuclear warhead arsenal to lash out to make himself feel better.

It’s time to start thinking about “President Mike Pence” and invoking The 25th Amendment of The United States Constitution.

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

2017-01-12-1484257884-1847761-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP2.jpeg

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

What other characteristics set Type A people apart? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Looking For Anti-Trump Protests? Here Are Dozens To Choose From.

A man who bragged about sexually assaulting women, mocked a reporter with a disability and invited a foreign adversary to hack the U.S. government will be sworn in next Friday as the 45th president of the United States.

And while it’s a fact that President-elect Donald Trump will be the next leader of the free world ― the first one to refuse to release his taxes since 1976, by the way ― you certainly don’t have to like it.

You can voice your concern at one of the hundreds of demonstrations planned across the country and around the world in the days surrounding the inauguration.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), along with congressional Democrats and health care activists, plans to lead dozens of rallies nationwide in an initiative called Our First Stand: Save Our Health Care. Most of the events are scheduled for this weekend, a few days before the inauguration.

Hundreds of poets are expected to gather on the steps of their local city halls on Sunday, Jan. 15, during the nationwide Poets Protest Against Trump.

Filmmaker and activist Michael Moore tweeted last month in support of the #DisruptJ20 Inauguration Day rallies planned around Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. The events are led by “a collective of experience activists” who call themselves the DC Welcoming Committee, according to the #DisruptJ20 website, which also lists numerous protests beyond the Beltway.

And, of course, the Women’s March on Washington and its more than 280 sister marches are expected to be the main event on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Nearly 600,000 people ― of all gender identities ― are expected to flood the streets of major cities across the world on Trump’s first full day in office.

For even more events, take a look at the listings below. Be sure to check which events have been issued permits, and know that your participation in non-permitted demonstrations could result in arrest.

And if those events are a no-go, you can always participate in the national general strike by refusing to work, shop or go to school on Inauguration Day.

However you plan to resist, stay safe ― and open-minded. Remember to listen to and respect one another.

Now go forth and protest.

Winter

Winter is a three-month period of time that represents a pause in the activity of life. Great lakes, ponds, and streams freeze over; the earth grows hard and unreceptive. Tree sap stops flowing. Even the air becomes dense, slow to move, and heat stealing. Yet, not everything is as it appears to be!

The pervasive stillness and deep silence of winter are powers every bit as great as are the explosive forces of spring and summer, only different. After all, what is a glacier but a vast frozen river crawling its way through time? Both are forms of water whose unstoppable might can carve their way through solid rock! So, how can we channel this power of winter and use it to let go of whatever stands between us and the higher life we desire?

Winter is the time of the year when the forces of nature assume their most passive form. But we are discovering here that passive does not mean powerless! Consider the micro-pause between each beat of the heart. Is the heart less alive, made less potent for the brief rest it takes in its own beating? Of course not! In each such moment of its repose we could just as easily say that it is gathering itself for its next pulsation. In other words, its temporary passive state is actually a measured act of preparation. So it is with the “heart” of winter.

The better we understand this unique power of being passive–and how it serves as the secret consort of all things active–the more we grow in the faith we need to be wisely passive toward whatever fears remain in us about letting go of our false self. This is why, during the dark days of winter, we should take time each day–as often as possible–to quietly return to the living Light that dwells in the center of ourselves.

By gathering our attention in this way, and bringing the whole of ourselves into the heart of this interior stillness, we not only collect our own forces, as nature herself is doing, but much more: in this deliberate act of gathering ourselves–and for the conscious sense of quiet contentment we find within it–we are also being released from the false idea that the source of our strength and security can be found somewhere outside us.

The great French author, philosopher, and Nobel Prize winner, Albert Camus, knew the power of this truth now revealed. He also realized its liberating potential. In the following carefully chosen words, see how beautifully he tells us not to fear any season of life wherein we find ourselves feeling empty, alone, or without any Light in our life. He writes: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.”

Once we start to see, to know in our innermost heart, that life itself is already complete, we can let go of whatever–or whoever–would have us believe otherwise.

Old attachments and their long-standing aches are now seen for being what they have always been: appendages of days gone by, worthless to the Higher Self we have agreed to become and by whose stillness we realize this need for a wholly new valuation of our own soul.

Now is the season to die to discontent, to withdraw our consent to live with any thoughts or feelings that would convince us it’s necessary to live in conflict or confusion.

The winter season can be the most challenging in terms of learning to channel its powers to help us let go. But, we may also have this timeless assurance: we are really created to enter into the perfect stillness from which we came. And for our return home–by entering into the bare infinity that is the center of our True Self–we arrive where we have always longed to be … without ever having had to set out. Here we make this last, glad discovery: the task of letting go, of separating ourselves from who and what we need no longer be, has already been done for us.

Lifestyle Guru Hey Fran Hey Shares 5 Self-Care Tips To Adopt In 2017

Self-care guru and social media personality Francheska Medina, who popularly goes by HeyFranHey, stopped by The Huffington Post Black Voices’ bi-weekly talk show “BV Breakdown” on Thursday to give some timely advice on how to cater to your mental and emotional health.

Fran is also a co-host of the podcast “The Friendzone” where she frequently explores issues of mental health and provides helpful ways to practice self-care. Black Voices’ Senior Editor Lilly Workneh and Associate Editor Taryn Finley, who co-hosted Thursday’s episode of the “BV Breakdown,” asked Fran to share some of her wisdom on mind and body wellness. In doing so, Fran provided five helpful tips on how to stay rejuvenated and refreshed in 2017:

1. Put Your Phone Down

To start things off, Fran acknowledge ways to address the very real struggle of social media addiction and ways to escape it.

“Just posting a picture or even your articles online…constantly has you checking your phone all day because you want these quick hits of dopamine [which is] the pleasure center in your body and your mind,” Fran said. “You’re basically looking for that pleasure all day long.”

The self-care goddess said obsession with social media can prevent productivity from taking place. “What happens is your stuck in this dopamine loop of looking for pleasure and things aren’t actually manifesting,” she continued. Her remedy for ending the social dopamine loop is to disable all notifications on your phone.

“That way you’re not so obsessive over whats popping up on your screen and you can actually concentrate all day,” she said.

2. Throw Some Passionflower Extract In Your Bedtime Tea

To simplify the process of catching good sleep, Fran suggested putting a couple of drops of passionflower extract in water or caffeine-free tea before bed. The extract is believed to enable better sleep by allowing you to feel more relaxed.

“It’s nice because it mimics that hormone that tells your body to chill out,” she said.

3. Meditate

As many people don’t have the time or resources to practice meditation in a yoga studio (or even their bedroom), Fran suggested wearing a mala bead necklace instead. The necklaces were created to enable a calmer state of mind as those wearing it are supposed to take a deep breath for each of its 108 beads.

If you don’t want to purchase a mala bead necklace, Fran suggested that a free alternative is to download the Headspace app which allows for a guided meditation.

“It’s nice to get that relaxation and get off that [dopamine] loop for a couple minutes,” she said of the app.

4. Take A Detox Bath With Epsom Salt

If you’re looking for a way to “get the week off of you” come Friday evening, Fran advised taking a bath using Epsom Salt, which is said to get rid of toxins, reduce stress and enhance sleep. You can even throw some lavender oil in the bath to potentially “tap into that goddessy feel,” she suggested.

“You can make a tub full of so many natural oils that will just have you coming out of the tub just forgetting what the week was about,” she said.

5. Essential Oil Diffuser

To saturate the room with good energy and aroma, Fran recommends using an oil diffuser. While any essential oil of your preference would work, she suggests the Palo Santo essential oil which is created with remnants of bark from the Palo Santo tree in the Amazon Forest as it will give your space a more “natural feel.”

What Happens To Drug Prices In A Trump Admnistration

The price of drugs remains out of control, and President-elect Trump vowed to address high drug prices during his campaign. But, with the Republican Congress set to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the drug companies are positioned to lose millions of customers with drug coverage. Since Congress does not intend to replace the ACA with equally robust insurance, many people will no longer be able to afford the drugs they need. So, what happens to the price of drugs in a Trump administration?

Since passage of the ACA, the drug industry has seen enormous profits. Regardless, according to StatNews, Pharma is claiming that the ACA didn’t help the industry as much as pharmaceutical executives expected. Drug makers had to pay billions in fees under the ACA. They also had to give drug discounts and rebates to people with Medicare through the Part D drug benefit.

Still, the ACA gave drug companies 22 million more customers with insurance to cover their drugs. So, the drug companies should be poised to lose significant revenue after the ACA is repealed and Congress imposes fewer requirements on the coverage health insurers offer.

Unfortunately, Pharma still has one card in its pocket. Drugmakers can raise drug prices further to compensate for their loss of customers. In fact, it is hard to imagine that they won’t raise prices on many drugs significantly. And, notwithstanding Trump’s recent claim to Time Magazine that he is going to bring down drug prices, it is equally hard to imagine that the Republican Congress will do what it would take to change this likely scenario.

Speaker Ryan and his Republican allies have never supported legislation that regulates drug prices. And, they are unlikely to repeal laws that give drug companies monopoly power over prices for many drugs. The only reason drug companies would not raise drug prices significantly is fear that, if they do, Congress would take some extreme action against them. That seems unrealistic.

Drug companies will also want to make up for the loss of sales that will no doubt come from the Republican leadership’s desire to deregulate the health insurance industry. Laws that require insurers to provide more generous drug benefits are not on Speaker Ryan’s or his Republican allies’ agendas. So, it seems inevitable that insurers will further restrict access to costly drugs.

Health insurers would prefer to deter people with costly conditions who tend to use high-cost drugs from enrolling in their plans through a limited formulary or high cost-sharing. Indeed, they have many ways to cherry pick healthier enrollees. To keep premiums down and profits up, they will no doubt revert to using them as much as possible.

If the Republican leadership opts not to privatize Medicare, people with Medicare may be in slightly better shape than younger people with insurance. Some believe that even if the ACA is repealed, Congress will keep elements of the law that fill the gap in coverage under the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit, known as the “donut hole.”  If drug costs continue to rise, however, it’s a good bet that Pharma will benefit far more than older adults and people with disabilities.

If you want Congress to keep its hands off Medicare, please sign this petition. To date, more than one million petitions have been delivered to Congress. Congressional Democrats are vowing to fight Medicare cuts.

Four Uncommon Ways to Clear Your Mind and Make Big Decisions

What are some tips for battling decision-fatigue? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Jenny Blake, Author of PIVOT: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One, on Quora.

Decision-fatigue refers to the phenomenon that, like willpower, our ability to make decisions throughout the day diminishes without proper recharging. When mid-Pivot and asking life’s biggest questions, we are often overwhelmed by smaller decisions and things that might not have registered on our radar in the past. Or conversely, we’re so bogged down by small day-to-day decisions that we don’t have the space to ask bigger Pivot questions about what we really want and what next steps would resonate most.

To refresh your mind, I recommend the following:

  • Don’t ask the same giant questions every day (ie: Should I quit my job?). Give yourself a period of time where you don’t have to decide at all, perhaps while you’re researching options. Revisit the decision at specific intervals of your choosing, but not on a daily monkey-mind basis.
  • Create routines for as much as you can in your life – morning routines, scheduling exercise for the same recurring days/times, evening wind down rituals. What recharges you? The more you can create routines around these things, the less you will find yourself debating what to do when throughout the day (gobbling up precious mental bandwidth).
  • Write your questions down.
  • Go with your gut! We actually do know the answer to more than we think – on decisions large and small. If you find yourself debating unproductively, ask: what does my gut say?

This Clothing Line For Kids Is Saying No To Gender Stereotypes

Inspired by her “spirited” daughter, a Kansas mom has developed a clothing line that says no to harmful gender stereotypes and encourages kids be themselves.

In June 2016, Tricia Steffes launched Crossing Arrows, a new brand that sells superhero capes, jeans and shirts with empowering messages for little girls. Steffes told The Huffington Post her 5-year-old daughter, Allie, is the inspiration for Crossing Arrows.

“After two and a half years of navigating her desire to wear boy clothes because her spirited (tomboy) taste didn’t have room for pink and princesses, I decided to design a line that allowed these spirited girls to embrace their individuality and say no to gender stereotyping,” she said.

Steffes, who works in finance and also operates a clothing line geared toward tall women, said she got the idea to launch a brand for kids in 2015. In January 2016, she started the research process, and the website officially went live in June. As founder and CEO of Crossing Arrows, Steffes works with a marketing manager, Hannah Kowalewski, and designer, Kelsie O’Brien.

The Crossing Arrows brand currently offers shirts with messages like “Be Adventurous,” “Future Coder” and “Donut Holes Not Gender Roles.” The website also has a selection of jeans, superhero capes and superhero-themed dresses

“We want all kids to be confident and feel empowered to pursue what they love.  If that is academia, athletics, music, robotics, dance … whatever it is, we want them to go all out ― to get out of their comfort zones to pursue their passions,” Steffes said.

“We want to teach them through our line of graphic tees that progress is more important than perfection and that each child is unique in their own way,” she added. “Our overall mission for our clothes is to give children options that doesn’t force them into a stereotypical box based on their gender.”

Though Crossing Arrows was created with girls in mind, they’re working to expand their intended audience. “The initial concept of our clothing line was specific to what we call the ‘spirited girl’ or sometimes referred to as a ‘tomboy,’ Steffes said.

“However, through the process, we have realized that boys face gender stereotyping in clothing as well, so several of our designs are gender neutral,” she added. Steffes said they look forward to seeing how their business grows and changes over the next year.

But Crossing Arrows is also about more than clothes. “We are also building a community of parents to discuss all things parenting, and more importantly we are building a philanthropic component that surrounds our greatest passion, child advocacy,” Steffes explained.

The brand has pledged to give back a portion of its profits to organizations focused on child advocacy. They are currently working with several nonprofit organizations to build this component of the business model.

Steffes said they also hope to eventually establish a foundation with the same philanthropic goals and plan empowering events to inspire kids to embrace their individuality and take risks. Ultimately, the goal is to have a positive impact on as many children as possible.

So far, they’ve received a lot of positive feedback from parents and kids. “I didn’t realize how much the gender stereotyping in children’s clothing had affected so many families until I launched Crossing Arrows,” the founder said, pointing to reviews from adults who said they wish there’d been a line like this when they were kids.

As for the original target customer, it’s clear she’s a fan as well.

“Allie is very opinionated and confident in what she likes, and she loves our designs and graphic tees,” Steffes told HuffPost, adding, “But what excites her more is knowing that we allow her to be who she is … she appreciates that we don’t make her wear ‘girly’ clothes and dresses.”

Meet our inspiration, Amazing Allie! #spirited #crossingarrows #inspiration

The mom said both Allie and her older daughter have also been instrumental in shaping the designs.

The Crossing Arrows team is gearing up for some exciting new developments as well. “We’ve had requests to produce other designs and one we are working on is a line of graphic tees for children with autism,” Steffes said.

What else does the future hold? She says you’ll have to “stay tuned!”

This Sweater Is Perfect For Anyone Who Is Done Talking About Politics

If you’ve had it up to here with talk about the election, the president elect and the sheer volume of news surrounding both of those things, boy have we got the sweater for you.

The “Leave Me Alone” sweater, designed by Pinterest engineer Ruth Wong, appears at first glance like a regular old sweater but can, according to Wong, be worn three ways: cowl neck, off the shoulder and “leave me alone.”

What does a leave-me-alone sweater look like, you ask? Picture a turtleneck that just keeps going and is then zippered shut, like so:

Wong wrote on Instructables, along with the steps to make it, that the leave-me-alone mode “is more of a statement than a functional piece of clothing,” and that she “can’t see anything through my sweater.” She suggests that if you’d like to wear it more often and in more situations, to “add eye holes.”

The sweater is just a DIY for now, but after it started getting attention Wong posted it on Betabrand, where it could eventually go into production.

Hey, it’s less work than getting into a Facebook fight, right?

Relationships That Have Roots are the Anchors in Our Lives

By Carolyn Massiah
UCF Forum columnist

The view in my backyard is a conservation area full of various types of trees. As the seasons pass, the trees lose their leaves and even some of their branches, but the trees remain in large part due to their sturdy roots.

To the side of my house is a concrete light pole. It doesn’t have any leaves and branches, obviously, but it is more susceptible to being blown down during a violent storm because it lacks the strong roots that mature trees have to anchor them through a storm.

When I compare and contrast the tree and the pole, I know I would much rather be a tree.

Both trees and light poles stand above the blanket of shrubs and bushes below. However, this is where the similarities end.

Many light poles are inorganic entities of concrete or metal, created through some form of human intervention. The shape and size in which these poles are created will forever be their shape and size as inorganic entities will not change during their existence unless there is additional intervention.

Trees, on the other hand, are organic. They are living organisms that continually change. They will lose and gain leaves and branches but they will also grow and mature throughout their existence. Continual growth and development is what I want for my own life. This is why I would rather be a tree than a light pole.

Unfortunately, positive growth sometimes must come from negative changes. Each year trees weather the change of seasons. With those changes in season, leaves come and they go and sometimes there may be seasons when the trees may not have any leaves at all on their branches.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that become attached to you as much as leaves are attached to branches. However, as the seasons change in our lives those people may disappear. Sometimes it seems several disappear at once and you are left bare much like trees in winter. For whatever reasons, those individuals were only meant to be in your life for a season. Yes, it hurts when those who you thought were going to stay forever leave your life before you are ready, but it is the nature of our organic lives.

Unfortunately, you never know how strong any branch will be until it is tested in the most violent of storms. Some branches appear thick and sturdy while they may actually be hollow or rotten to the core. If you step out on the branch for support because of its sturdy appearance, you might be disappointed and shocked when that branch does not support you but breaks and hurts you instead.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that we have relied upon and with whom we have built a long-term relationship. We have truly let them into our lives. However, as the weight of whatever burden you need bared by them increases, that friend gives under the load and breaks away from you in a permanent and irrevocable manner. Yes, it hurts but just as leaves come for a reason during a season, branches are there for those life-long lessons that we will take with us long after the branches have broken and been swept away. That is the nature of our organic lives.

So based on this, you might now be wondering why I would choose to be a tree instead of a pole. One word: roots!

Because trees are organic living creatures their roots continue to grow and strengthen as the tree grows and matures. When a storm comes, the roots anchor trees and allow trees to bend but not break in the storm.

Poles do not have that same anchor support. That is why we see more poles than trees down after severe hurricanes.

The same can be said for our own lives. Think about those individuals in your life that have been your anchor and support through the good and the bad. Often, much like a tree’s roots, those individuals do all of their work out of the view of others with no need of public acknowledgement. They are the blessings that we cannot overlook in our lives.

After comparing and contrasting the two, if I had to choose I would rather be a tree if it means that I will continue to have the blessings of roots just waiting to support me and feed me as I work to develop and mature throughout my existence.

Mom Talks ‘Vagina Stitches’ And Other Stuff No One Tells You About Having Kids

The first year of parenthood is full of messy surprises. While there’s no way to prepare for some of these experiences, other aspects are actually quite universal ― just not commonly discussed.

U.K. mom and blogger Gylisa Jayne got honest about these “real” parenting moments in a viral Facebook post, titled “The things no one told me.”

“There has been countless moments during my first year of motherhood, when I have thought ‘ why did no one tell me about this…!’” she wrote.

Jayne proceeded to list examples of these too-real parenting experiences ― like the “stitches in your vag” that can hurt more than childbirth, the initial breastfeeding pain, the reality of never being alone again yet missing your baby during naptime, the feelings of loneliness and fear, and more.

“No one told me that EVERYONE will have an opinion on your baby ― how to feed it, how to clothe it, how to name it, how to rock it, why you should only rock it for 5 seconds a day else it will be a spoilt little fuck, and how if you aren’t holding it 24/7 then you are clearly a Shit Mum…. and so on,” Jayne wrote, adding that no one told her a “polite way of telling said opinionated people to eff off” either.

“No one told me that despite feeling like I couldn’t do any of this, that I wouldn’t know the first thing about motherhood, actually my instincts would not fail me, and everyone is winging it,” Jayne continued. “Some just make it look easier than others. Admiring someone else’s way of doing things shouldn’t make me question mine.”

The mom’s Facebook post really resonated with other parents and received over 75,000 likes.

Jayne, who lives in Cornwall with her husband and their 1-and-a-half-year-old daughter Lily, shares her reflections on motherhood on her blog. She told The Huffington Post she was inspired to write this post and others along the same theme because she’s encountered many situations that simply aren’t covered in parenting books.

“They all tell you how to parent and look after your child, but none of them tell you how to cope with parenthood,” she said. “I started my blog to reach out to other mothers that might be feeling like I was ― overwhelmed, lonely, isolated by motherhood in general.”

Since starting her blog, Jayne has amassed over 11,000 Facebook followers. She said she’s “honored” when readers reach out to share their similar experiences and thank her for her words.

“So many women now reach out to me to tell me that I’ve written what they were thinking but never found the words for,” she said. “I’ve found writing honestly about parenting has helped so many people realize that these moments are totally normal! It’s made women who otherwise wouldn’t have spoken about it feel like they aren’t the only one,” she added.

The fear and chaos and exhaustion and doubt ― it’s all normal.

Rex Tillerson Can Expect A Lot Of Questions About His Record On Climate Change

Rex Tillerson, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of state, will likely face plenty of tough questions during his confirmation hearings on Wednesday: about his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, deals his former company made with Iran, and the secretive oil venture he oversaw in the tax haven of the Bahamas.

But senators will also probably focus on the outgoing Exxon Mobil Corp. CEO’s climate change record. Tillerson, 64, is a Texas-born oil man who spent 41 years at the world’s largest publicly listed energy company and has a complicated history on the subject.

Under his decade-long tenure as chief executive, Exxon Mobil shifted its public messaging on climate change by ending years of funding a Big Tobacco-style disinformation campaign and finally acknowledging that human activity is causing the Earth to get warmer. The company announced in 2009 that it was in favor of taxing carbon and that it had begun investing in algae-based biofuels. It cam out in support of the Paris climate accord in 2015, which more than 180 countries have signed.

Despite these attempts to burnish Exxon Mobil’s public image, Tillerson’s record at the helm remains less straightforward. The company has continued to lavish money on think tanks and advocacy groups that deny fossil fuels worsen climate change, even though it pledged in 2007 to stop doing so. Its political donations overwhelmingly have gone to Republicans who have battled environmental regulations, including the Obama administration’s rules curbing greenhouse gas emissions. And Tillerson has openly mocked the renewable energy industry, even as rival oil giants sunk money into wind, solar and battery storage projects.

“While we’ve seen some shifts in rhetoric, the company’s conduct does not back up its words,” Kathy Mulvey, climate accountability campaign manager at the nonprofit Union of Concerned Scientists, told The Huffington Post on Monday. “We’re still seeing Exxon Mobil, for example, playing a leadership role in funding groups that spread disinformation on climate science and policy.”

Despite the firm’s supposed evolution on global warming, neither Exxon Mobil nor Tillerson owned up to the years the company spent funding organizations whose chief purpose seemed to be seeding doubt over climate science. That funding has been under increased scrutiny since October 2015, when InsideClimate News and the Los Angeles Times published documents revealing that Exxon Mobil chose to continue funding disinformation campaigns even though its scientists understood global warming decades ago. The reports provoked a group of state attorneys general to begin investigating corporations, including Exxon Mobil, for allegedly misleading the public on climate change.

“I’m deeply interested in the record of Exxon Mobil when Mr. Tillerson was in leadership in funding organizations that tried to muddy up or deny the reality of climate science,” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), who sits on the Senate committee tasked with grilling Tillerson, said Tuesday on “CBS This Morning.”

“Exxon Mobil is an organization filled with scientists and engineers and from what I’ve read, they understood decades ago that humans were affecting climate in ways that could be dangerous, but the allegation is that they then made the decision to cover that evidence up as long as they could for their own financial benefit,” Kaine said. “And I want to explore what Mr. Tillerson knows about that.”

Five of the 10 Democratic senators on the committee scored 100 percent on the League of Conservation Voters’ 2015 ranking, meaning they voted in favor of environmentally friendly bills whenever presented with one. Kaine ranked the lowest, with 88 percent, despite a 91 percent lifetime score.

The environmental advocacy group NextGen Climate released an ad on Tuesday that shows Tillerson, while in his role leading Exxon Mobil, telling an audience at the University of Texas that he was “not here to represent the United States government’s interests.” Tom Steyer, the group’s billionaire founder, said the ad shows how Tillerson “puts corporate interests over American interests” ― and may continue to do so as secretary of state.

“The American people deserve more assurance than we’ve received so far that he will be able to represent their values when U.S. policy goals conflict with Exxon’s ongoing corporate interests,” Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) said in a statement.

Tillerson’s meager record of public service could become another sticking point as senators probe his résumé. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) said Monday that he planned to pepper Tillerson with questions about how his career as an oil executive qualified him to lead the State Department.

“After talking with him, I still have significant questions about Mr. Tillerson’s foreign policy views and how his four-decade career at one of the largest oil companies in the world prepares him to be our nation’s top diplomat,” Merkley said in a statement. “I look forward to further exploring Mr. Tillerson’s views at his confirmation hearing.”
