Trump and the Need for a Stronger Infrastructure for Peace

With the election of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, it may be hard to recall the heady few years starting in 1989, when Americans could reasonably believe that the United States and the world in general were entering an enduring period of widespread peace. The Cold War had ended without violence as did Soviet domination of countries in Eastern Europe. The generally peaceful break-up of the Soviet Union coincided with a negotiated end to proxy wars in Central America and elsewhere. In South Africa, the struggle to end apartheid was successful, again without feared bloodshed between whites and blacks. Neighboring civil wars in Namibia, Mozambique, and Angola ended with negotiated agreements after protracted violence. The long-lasting fight about the status of Northern Ireland was settled. The UN became much more effectively engaged in interventions in civil wars, diplomatically and with peacekeeping forces, leading many to hope that the end of the Cold War had given way to a new era of global cooperation.

These transformations were associated with new ideas and insights about why violent conflicts emerge and how they can be contained, deescalated and settled. In the preceding decades, the fields of peace studies and conflict resolution emerged and began to become institutionalized, particularly in the United States and Western Europe. These fields advanced constructive strategies relating, for example, to negotiation and mediation, to non-official diplomacy, to mutual confidence-building measures, to inter-cultural exchanges and dialogue groups, and to reliance on nonviolent actions. Soon, courses and graduate degree-granting programs were being established in the United States and around the world devoted to the study of conflict transformation and peacebuilding.

Trump’s victory however, may cap any dwindling hope that the world has entered a new era of cooperative peacebuilding. Since the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States has become embroiled in unending violent conflicts both overtly and covertly, primarily in the Middle East and North Africa. Horrible violations of basic human rights are being carried out daily by governments and extremists alike in Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere, often in full view of an unresponsive international community. Waves of refugees are met with suspicion and fear by many people in Europe and the United States as those countries turn inward.

What happened to reverse, in many cases, the progress that had been underway? First, frightful violations of the practices of the constructive peace and conflict resolution fields were perpetrated by actors who contradicted them by committing horrible terror attacks. Second, in response to the attacks in the United States on 9/11, the lessons of those constructive ideas were widely ignored and extraordinary violent escalations were executed in a global war against terrorism and by invading Iraq. Subsequently, some constructive U.S. government efforts during President Obama’s presidency, were hampered by opposing partisan groups. Third, the fragile international consensus around collaborative peacebuilding was fractured by wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Georgia, and the Ukraine. Fourth, extremist ideologies flourished in the vacuum of effective governance across many nations in the Middle East, North Asia, and Africa.

Where do we go from here? How can Trump’s unrealistic depiction of the world and America’s role in it be altered or limited? Fundamentally, the growth of the ideas and practices of the peace and conflict resolution fields need to be strengthened and expanded in the United States and abroad. The biggest tragedy of the current era is that never have we known so much about the causes of violent conflict and credible pathways to constructive peacebuilding but not applied this knowledge in practice. Doing so entails several elements. Knowledge about the constructive conflict approach and of its possible applications must be diffused at all societal levels and sectors. Some constructive work has been done at all educational levels, within various governmental agencies, and among the growing number of nongovernmental organizations; but the scale of work needs to increase. Old and new channels of communication should recognize successful constructive ways of handling conflicts, and celebrate when destructive escalations are avoided or finally, destructive conflicts are positively transformed.

Organizational and educational efforts should be taken to counter the vested interests in perpetuating the overused and ineffective strategies relied on in the past and which may be enhanced during Trump’s administration. Alternatives to the naïve and dangerous belief that reliance on coercive force is nearly always an effective pathway to national security must be put forward. The military-industrial complex has been augmented by congressional and educational ties and has become so pervasive that it is hardly discussed. But its magnitude heavily influences all kinds of decision-making. The capabilities that it provides make it the obvious supplier of the tools to apply to problems. This results in recourse to violence and threats of violence when other means of influence might be more effective. This reality should be explained.

Governmental and non-governmental Institutions that have alternative tools for conducting and resolving conflicts should be strengthened. This obviously should pertain to the Department of State, which has been sadly underfunded for a very long time. It also relates to the Department of Justice and to the Department of Commerce. The value of greater reliance on the UN and other international governmental and non-governmental organizations should be promoted. Moreover, transnational corporations and other non-governmental organizations can conduct their operations with greater consideration of their effects upon the emergence of conflicts and how they are waged.

The federal government’s departments and agencies, under the leadership of the likely choices by Trump and his supporters, will tend to pursue regressive policies. Leaders in the Democratic Party and also in the Republican Party should identify constructive alternatives. Civic organizations should also formulate alternatives and rally support for well-grounded constructive policies. Available appropriate alternatives then can be used when conditions are propitious.

More analyses of ways to constructively wage and transform conflicts are needed. This should be combined in some settings with formulating detailed strategies for dealing with specific conflict situations. Such work can be done in existing institutions such as the United States Institute of Peace, university centers, and think tanks. In addition, new think tanks should be created for these purposes that are relatively independent of the U.S. government and the military-industrial complex.

With determination and perseverance, Trump’s election can be used to spur new thinking among the many Americans who had been going along with the failing conventional approach to American engagement in foreign conflicts. Now, with increased risks of disastrous policies at home and abroad, they may give new attention to constructive ways to advance peace. Trump then may unwittingly help galvanize efforts to strengthen the infrastructure for peace. With the ascent of Trump to the U.S. presidency, the need is greater than ever to think and act creatively. We can join and support organizations that already strive to build a stronger infrastructure for peace and we can create more.

Heart Gift 8: Our Humble Little Bricks: A letter from 1953

My Heart Gift today is one of my favorite letters from my father. It is a letter that he wrote to his step-father, from Turkey in 1953-63 years ago. Aged just 23 at the time of writing, his words are poetic, profound and as relevant today as they were in 1953. The letter was published in his book, The Unbeaten Track in 1970. I include his description before the letter as I think it is a beautiful example of my father’s word alchemy. I hope you enjoy it!

“A fortnight later, rucksack on my back, I had hitch-hiked right across Europe and into central Turkey. A letter from home awaited me in the little town of Kayseri, the Caesarea of antiquity. I stopped there for a couple of days, putting up, by invitation of the headmaster, at the local college, empty for the summer vacation. There I started a friendship with Orhan, a student who still remained in the college waiting for his parents to come from Istanbul before joining them in their native village close by. ‘Why don’t you come along with me?’ Orhan said, ‘and see life in a Turkish village?’

It was from that village that I re-read Tadeusz’s letter. ‘What in hell draws you to these countries?’ he wrote. ‘Are you still as keen about it, or have the poverty and primitive conditions cooled you off a bit by now?’ The evening light was failing, as I sat in the porch of my host’s modest cottage, and smiled to myself. The village square was deep in fine dust. Chickens scratched around in the animal droppings for food; a flock of ducks came wobbling across the square hustled home by a ten-year-old in baggy trousers with missing fly-buttons, his round chubby face in striking contrast to his oversized cap. He whistled sharply, raising his stick towards the laggards who were trying to dispute the droppings with the chicken, and shouted gaily ‘burda, burda!’ (‘this way!).

Now a herd of cattle ambled to their sheds, trailing dust, lowing softly, the resonance of their bells mingling with long- drawn shepherd calls which the hushed clear air seemed to hold for ever, so that they lingered lazily like the dancing dust that tarried over the square. Last of all the bullock-carts lumbered in, ponderous on their spokeless wheels of solid wood, their axles whining and complaining with a note of ever-changing pitch.

Lost in thought, I didn’t notice Orhan, who had brought a hurricane lamp and a dish of sour milk. ‘There!’ he smiled, ‘you can’t write home in the dark. The night falls fast here. Eat this soon, or it’ll be swimming with gnats.’ ‘Tashakur’ (‘thank you!’), I grinned back at him, ‘I wish my Turkish were half as good as your English!’

‘You ask me if I like it here,’ I wrote. ‘Oh yes, intensely, but how can I explain? It’s a bit like meeting a girl, when everything clicks, and you fall in love. I feel gloriously alive and very much at home, almost as if I were regaining a homeland. But probing more deeply what can I say? You have to feel it and to live it. These lands suckled the earliest civilizations, nurtured the first roots of man’s timid gropings towards the tree that we are now. Beneath the outward poverty, under the grime and the tatters there is a culture as time itself, infinitely complex and wise. These weathered lands hold out the corrective to our brave new world, of the sobriety of age and experience, of diversity in life’s options: especially to those seeking to apprehend the ultimates and the quiddity within the ebb and flow of appearance. To me this last is particularly appealing: the directness and immediacy between man and his natural environment.

At the same time there is so much need here, so much wretchedness that could be remedied. The challenge is enormous. The poverty is crushing, perhaps less so here in Turkey than in other parts of Asia, a poverty often aggravated by the former exploitation by European colonial powers. I believe everybody in the West should be aware of this and its profound consequences for all of us. Help and alleviation of this wretchedness can come essentially from a better understanding of its causes, nature and extent, and in this every one of us can help, can contribute his humble little brick.

I daresay this may not answer your questions very satisfactorily, for it is written in the heat of the moment, real no less than for it is figurative – 96°F in the shade!”

Missing Just 2 Hours Of Sleep Quadruples Your Risk Of A Car Accident

If you’ve driven after a night of only four or five hours of sleep, you might as well be driving drunk, according to a new report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The new data reveals that drivers who’ve slept five to six hours in the previous 24 nearly double their risk for a crash. And drivers who’ve only slept four to five hours the previous night more than quadruple their risk of a crash ― the same risk as someone who is legally drunk. (The report considered the standard of sufficiency to be seven hours of sleep per night, the minimum recommended for adults by the National Sleep Foundation.)   

 

“You cannot miss sleep and still expect to be able to safely function behind the wheel,” David Yang, AAA’s executive director, said in a press release.

The results are sobering considering more than 35 percent of surveyed Americans reported getting fewer than seven hours of sleep per night on average, according to a 2011 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.

AAA’s new drowsy driving report included data from a national sample of 4,571 police reported crashes that included 7,234 drivers. For each crash, at least one vehicle was towed from the scene and emergency medical services had been sent. As part of the investigation, each driver was asked to report how much he or she had slept in the prior 24-hour period. 

The data showed that compared to drivers who slept more than seven hours,

  • Drivers who slept six to seven hours were 1.3 times more likely to crash;
  • Drivers who slept five to six hours were 1.9 times more likely to crash;
  • Drivers who slept four to five hours were 4.3 times more likely to crash; and 
  • Drivers who slept fewer than four hours were 11.5 times more likely to crash.

Previous reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have shown that having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 makes a driver 2.7 to 3.9 times more likely to crash compared to someone who is completely sober.  

What’s more, the study may actually underestimate the risk of driving while sleep-deprived, because the research does not include data on crashes that occurred between midnight and 6 a.m. ― a time period that other studies have identified as the most detrimental to attention and performance.

“We never really truly understand how tired we are.”

Signs of drowsy driving include having trouble keeping your eyes open, drifting in your lane or not remembering driving portions of your trip. But drivers should pay more attention to getting enough sleep, rather than being vigilant about signs of fatigue, as people can easily underestimate how sleepy they actually are. They should stay off the road if they haven’t gotten enough, the AAA report recommends. 

We never really truly understand how tired we are,” Pam Fischer, a transportation safety consultant and former director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, previously told The Huffington Post. “That’s the scary thing about fatigue.”

The bottom line: If you haven’t gotten enough sleep, getting behind the wheel is a lot more dangerous than most of us probably think. It’s another good reason to prioritize sleep ― and to make sure any designated driver is not only sober, but also well-rested.

Michigan Republicans Are Trying To Pass A Restrictive Voter ID Bill For No Reason

Michigan lawmakers advanced a bill on Wednesday night that would require the state’s residents to provide identification when they vote ― a measure that could significantly reduce the number of people whose votes are counted in elections.

Current Michigan law allows residents to vote without identification if they sign an affidavit attesting to their identity. The new law would allow residents to continue to vote without identification, but their votes wouldn’t be counted unless they returned to their local clerk’s office with ID within 10 days.

The Michigan Secretary of State’s office told The Detroit News that 18,388 residents voted in the November presidential election without voter ID and signed affidavits attesting to their identities. About half of those ballots were from Wayne County, where Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton won just over 66 percent of the vote. The Michigan Secretary of State’s office told The Huffington Post that no cases of fraud had been reported.

The bill includes funding that would allow residents to get the required documentation for free, but there are other costs associated with obtaining an ID, critics of the bill point out.

“While there are some provisions in the bill that intend to make it easier for indigent people to obtain photo ID, those provisions are only helpful if those individuals – who are already lacking in resources – know exactly what to do and what hoops to jump through in advance,” Merissa Kovach, a field organizer with the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, wrote in a blog post.

The practical effect of these bills will be to disenfranchise the vast majority of eligible voters who don’t have photo ID or show up on Election Day without it.

“Waiving the cost of a photo ID does not account for other significant costs that voters will have to pay, including transportation, waiting in line, time away from work or acquiring the underlying documents like a birth certificate. The practical effect of these bills will be to disenfranchise the vast majority of eligible voters who don’t have photo ID or show up on Election Day without it,” Kovach added.

The bill will now advance to the state Senate, where Republicans hold a 27-11 majority. Tom Lenard, a spokesman for state Sen. Jim Ananich, the body’s Democratic leader, said he expected the bill to be fast-tracked through the legislature’s lame duck session and pass the chamber if Republicans want to pass it.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) hasn’t indicated whether he’ll sign the bill.

“Gov. Snyder doesn’t decide whether or not he will sign a bill until he is sent the final version as passed by both chambers and has a chance to thoroughly review it,” Anna Heaton, a Snyder spokeswoman, wrote in an email.

Michigan, where President-elect Donald Trump defeated Clinton by just over 10,700 votes, was a crucial state in last month’s presidential election. A federal judge halted a recount effort in Michigan backed by Green Party candidate Jill Stein on Wednesday. Stein initiated the recount due to claims of outside interference in the election.

During and after his campaign, Trump has stoked fears of voter fraud, even though it rarely happens. Republicans have pushed for a number of voter ID bills across the country that make it more difficult for minorities and low-income Americans to vote.

What I Wish I Had Known In My Twenties

One time when I was twenty-five, I went shopping for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. We had been together for three years, and my dad kept asking when I would marry her. My friends kept asking. Her friends kept asking. Her dad kept asking her and she would tell me.

We were living together. And I liked her. Maybe I loved her.

But I started to shiver when I was looking at rings in the store. My friend who I was with took one look at me and quoted a lyric from an MC 900 Ft Jesus song: “Something’s gonna happen, and it’s probably not good.”

So I didn’t buy the ring. We didn’t get married. She moved out. We moved to different cities. I called her once a few years later, but now she’s not even on Facebook, and we haven’t talked since.

That sums up the twenties - everything you think is important and meaningful has absolutely no bearing on your future life.

I loved her. I had a job. I was writing novels. I had friends. I was a computer programmer.

Now, none of the above is true. (Oh, I have friends. Just different friends – 100% different).

And everything in my thirties – nothing is true anymore (except I have two kids still. Although now they are not babies. Now they are smarter than me).

I’m forty-eight now.

My most recent career change occurred when I was forty-seven. Before that, I started writing seriously (I wrote five very unserious books in my thirties) when I was forty-two.

In my twenties and thirties, my average weight was about 155 – 170. Now it’s 140. I write every day. I don’t obsess about money all day long. And I make bad decisions all day long – just like I did in my twenties.

The main skill I got between my twenties and now is that I bounce back from bad things faster.

I was very successful in my late twenties. And then a total failure after. Then very successful. And so on.

So that didn’t change. Only my ability to bounce back from really bad things. Horrible things. Things you wouldn’t want to wish on anyone, and yet they happen, in some form or other, to everyone.

So the only thing I can with full integrity say I wish I had known: nothing at all matters. Oh, and since nothing matters, once you realize that, you’ll start to bounce back faster.

And since nothing matters, you might as well be kind to people as much as possible. We can all laugh at the same joke at the end of this very long day.

Santa Goes Above And Beyond For Boy With Special Needs

For 6-year-old James Epps, the prospect of meeting Santa Claus was very exciting, but also a bit overwhelming. James has special needs, so big crowds and social interactions can be difficult for him.

But a kind Santa went above and beyond to make this Christmas experience a happy one for James. And they took some awesome photos to remember it. 

On December 2, James’ mom Alison brought him to “Santa’s Special Visit” ― an event at Restoration Community Church that offers kids with special needs in their Tennessee community the chance to meet the jolly man in red. Having the opportunity to interact with Santa in a calm and understanding environment is invaluable to kids like James. 

“I think people don’t realize how difficult something like that can be for some children,” Alison told The Huffington Post. “I would love for people to be more aware and accepting and less judgmental when we try to participate in events in our community.”

James was born prematurely a 22 weeks, six days and weighed just 15 ounces. He was diagnosed with autism at 3 years old and epilepsy at 4. James also has mild cerebral palsy and a feeding disorder. 

“He gets very overwhelmed when there is too much activity, or when it is too loud,” Alison explained. “We have learned techniques over the years to help calm him, but they don’t always work. Many times we’ve had to leave events because he’s become overwhelmed and can’t calm or just completely shuts down.”

When James met Santa Claus, he felt overwhelmed and nervous and didn’t want to sit anywhere but the floor. But that was no problem because Santa got down on the floor with him. 

Alison snapped a few photos of their sweet interaction and shared them on her Facebook page. After friends told her how much the photos touched their hearts, she also sent them to the popular Love What Matters Facebook page, where her story received over 22,000 likes. Santa “did everything he could to make it a magical moment for my sweet boy,” she wrote in the caption.

“James was so excited to meet Santa,” Alison told HuffPost. “We talked about it a lot leading up to that day.” Since the experience, she said James talks about Santa and smiles. “I believe he remembers the event and it is a good memory for him,” she said. 

James’ mom wants people to know that her son is so much more than his diagnoses. “He is loving and kind-hearted,” Alison said. “He reads on a second grade level. He is learning to play the piano just by listening and can play about eight recognizable songs.”

As for James’ Santa photos, she hopes they “bring a smile” to people. “I also hope it helps people be aware that the child they see crawling on the floor or acting different in some way needs your kindness and understanding, not your judgement,” she said.

Alison also believes her story could inspire others to hold similar events in their communities. “Without an event like this James would not have had the opportunity to meet Santa,” she said. “These little things help create childhood memories that won’t be forgotten.”

Matt Lauer Calls Out Donald Trump For His ‘SNL’ Tweets

Well, we all know what Donald Trump is up to on Saturday nights.

For weeks, each “Saturday Night Live” episode has been followed by an especially curmudgeonly review from the show’s No. 1 fan/hate-watcher, our new president-elect. 

In that time, HuffPost asked some “SNL” cast members for their thoughts, and Sasheer Zamata summed it up best, saying, “Shouldn’t he be working on something?”

While Trump called in to “Today” after his appointment as Time’s Person of the Year, Matt Lauer, who some believe failed to press Trump in a previous TV segment, called the Donald out on his Twitter behavior.

“Can we agree, President-elect Trump, that at this stage it would be better for you to simply stop watching ‘SNL’ as opposed to watching it and then complaining about it? ” said Lauer.

The answer? Basically a resounding, “Nah.”

Trump went on a rant, saying, ”Well, I hosted ‘SNL’ when it was a good show, but it’s not a good show anymore. First of all, nothing to do with me. There’s nothing funny about it. The skits are terrible. I mean Alec, I like Alec, but his imitation of me is really mean-spirited and not very good. I don’t think it’s good. And I do like him. And I like him as an actor, but I don’t think that his imitation of me gets me at all. And it’s meant to be very mean-spirited, which is very biased, and I don’t like it. So I can tweet that out.”

“But you can’t bring yourself to stop watching it,” said Lauer.

“No, look, frankly the way the show is going now, and you look at the kind of work they’re doing, who knows how long that show’s gonna be on. It’s a terrible show.”

“I think it’s gonna do OK,” Lauer said.

Yeah, “SNL” is probably going to be fine. After all, Time’s Person of the Year tunes in every week.

Chase Your Dream, Not Your Dragon

There is nobody like you on the planet, and with the right development, we can attract the support of others who will welcome our dream, too.

With growth, there will always be an opportunity to attain the thing you want, no matter how it shows itself. To imagine a life without a dream, even the tiniest one, is submitting to a world of mediocrity.

Jenn is principled, articulate and passionate – but running for Congress is a steep climb.

According to Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers and the ten-thousand-hour rule of “deliberate practice,” which asserts that to become a world-class expert in any field, a person must practice their skill or trade for ten thousand hours. The Beatles did it in Hamburg and Steve Jobs in a high school computer lab. Gladwell believed that by reaching 10,000 hours (that’s about 90 minutes per day for 20 years) of practice you can become an outlier – the “Tipping-Point” of greatness.

Today, we have new rules. We believe that if we think about one thing long enough it will hardwire into us. Our new cracked system of facts makes it possible for anyone to claim anything as reality in a post-truth era. But Gladwell’s ten-thousand-hour rule offers a greater prospect of deciphering the faux from the real deal.

Let’s be honest, for most folk winning a congressional race is near on impossible. The odds are stacked high. To succeed, Jenn would need media coverage, infrastructure and money. It takes years to build all three components, and Jenn has none. Although principled, articulate and passionate, her feelings of self-worth are now at ground zero.

Running for Congress is Jenn’s go-to story, how she defines her world. But, in truth, she has no resources or support. She has moderate experience and no plans. “If you can’t link the dots,” I told her, “Your approach will always let you down.”

She felt like she had failed. But in hindsight, she hadn’t failed at all; she was just beginning.

I had spent a good 30 minutes listening to Jenn. She must have mentioned grassroots at least seven times. There is always a clue if you listen to a person long enough. I let her know that.

My thought was to open more of a dialogue about her interest in grassroots work.

Her eyes lit up as she rambled excitingly about working as an activist. A grassroots activist. Her inspiration was back. She felt energized.

Did she want to work for an organization to help women, or apply for a grassroots internship? “Oh,” she said, “So many thoughts, so many decisions – I can’t wait to make them all.”

She smiled, and with that I knew she was well on her way towards her heart dream. And who knows, she may become a congressional winner after all.

Just really, believe in what you’re trying to do. Don’t let people alter that. Let people advise you and lead you down paths to make smart business decisions. But trust your instinct and trust that overwhelming drive that made you put all your dreams and everything on the line. –Luke Bryan

Lady Gaga Opens Up About Struggling With PTSD In Emotional Letter

During a “Today” show segment that aired on Monday, Lady Gaga revealed she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder

The singer’s admission came about two years after she opened up about being sexually assaulted at the age of 19. On Wednesday, Gaga elaborated on life with PTSD in an open letter published on her Born This Way Foundation website.

“It is a daily effort for me, even during this album cycle, to regulate my nervous system so that I don’t panic over circumstances that to many would seem like normal life situations,” the pop star wrote, before expanding on dealing with triggering memories. 

“I am continuing to learn how to transcend this because I know I can. If you relate to what I am sharing, please know that you can too,” the “Joanne” singer added.

I have wrestled for some time about when, how and if I should reveal my diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). After five years of searching for the answers to my chronic pain and the change I have felt in my brain, I am finally well enough to tell you. There is a lot of shame attached to mental illness, but it’s important that you know that there is hope and a chance for recovery.

It is a daily effort for me, even during this album cycle, to regulate my nervous system so that I don’t panic over circumstances that to many would seem like normal life situations. Examples are leaving the house or being touched by strangers who simply want to share their enthusiasm for my music.

I also struggle with triggers from the memories I carry from my feelings of past years on tour when my needs and requests for balance were being ignored. I was overworked and not taken seriously when I shared my pain and concern that something was wrong. I ultimately ended up injured on the Born This Way Ball. That moment and the memory of it has changed my life forever. The experience of performing night after night in mental and physical pain ingrained in me a trauma that I relive when I see or hear things that remind me of those days.

I also experience something called dissociation which means that my mind doesn’t want to relive the pain so “I look off and I stare” in a glazed over state. As my doctors have taught me, I cannot express my feelings because my pre-frontal cortex (the part of the brain that controls logical, orderly thought) is overridden by the amygdala (which stores emotional memory) and sends me into a fight or flight response. My body is in one place and my mind in another. It’s like the panic accelerator in my mind gets stuck and I am paralyzed with fear.

When this happens I can’t talk. When this happens repeatedly, it makes me have a common PTSD reaction which is that I feel depressed and unable to function like I used to. It’s harder to do my job. It’s harder to do simple things like take a shower. Everything has become harder. Additionally, when I am unable to regulate my anxiety, it can result in somatization, which is pain in the body caused by an inability to express my emotional pain in words.

But I am a strong and powerful woman who is aware of the love I have around me from my team, my family and friends, my doctors and from my incredible fans who I know will never give up on me. I will never give up on my dreams of art and music. I am continuing to learn how to transcend this because I know I can. If you relate to what I am sharing, please know that you can too.

Traditionally, many associate PTSD as a condition faced by brave men and women that serve countries all over the world. While this is true, I seek to raise awareness that this mental illness affects all kinds of people, including our youth. I pledge not only to help our youth not feel ashamed of their own conditions, but also to lend support to those servicemen and women who suffer from PTSD. No one’s invisible pain should go unnoticed.

I am doing various modalities of psychotherapy and am on medicine prescribed by my psychiatrist. However, I believe that the most inexpensive and perhaps the best medicine in the world is words. Kind words… positive words… words that help people who feel ashamed of an invisible illness to overcome their shame and feel free. This is how I and we can begin to heal. I am starting today, because secrets keep you sick. And I don’t want to keep this secret anymore.

If you think you might have PTSD, please seek professional help. There is so much hope for recovery. Many people think that the event that stimulated PTSD needs to be the focus. Yet often, people will experience the same event and have completely different reactions to it. It is my opinion that trauma occurs in an environment where your feelings and emotional experience are not valued, heard and understood. The specific event is not the cause of traumatic experience. This lack of a “relational home” for feelings is the true cause of traumatic experience. Finding support is key.

John McCain: ‘Outrageous’ That Reporters Ask Me About Donald Trump

WASHINGTON ― Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has had it with reporters asking him about President-elect Donald Trump.

He got mad at a Bloomberg reporter who asked him about Trump’s tax plan, and repeatedly told him he’s not going to talk about the president-elect of the United States. When a PRI reporter asked when he would talk about Trump again, the Arizona senator responded, now somewhat playfully, “On the first of January, I promise to start answering these stupid, idiotic questions.”

McCain’s been saying as much for at least a week. He just doesn’t want to talk about the guy moving into the White House. 

The Huffington Post asked him why.

“Because that’s all the conversation is about,” he said. “I’ve said everything that I have to say about him and I am focused on my job, which is defending this nation, not commenting on every move Donald Trump makes.”

His complaints come on a day when he did, in fact, choose to talk about Trump. He penned a 600-word Financial Times op-ed titled “Donald Trump Retreats From Trade Deals At His Peril.”

McCain acknowledged to reporters that Trump is about to become president of the United States, a position pretty worthy of discussion. But he said he’s waiting until next year, after Trump is sworn in, to answer questions about him.

Asked if that means he won’t talk about anything the president-elect does between now and January, the GOP senator became visibly angry. “I’m sick and tired of only being asked about everything that Donald Trump says or does. I think it’s outrageous and ridiculous that people like you should continue to do so.”

He may have been more blunt than most, but he’s not the only powerful Republican in Congress desperate to talk about something other than the man they helped win the presidency. 

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) tried to make himself invisible during the presidential campaign. Since the election, he’s punted on questions about Trump falsely tweeting about voter fraud and Trump’s plans to build a wall along the Mexican border. And House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) had this to say when asked Monday about Trump tweeting lies and conspiracy theories: “Who cares?”

Do You Need a Coach or Therapist?

Coaches and therapists often overlap in what they offer clients. Understanding how they differ and articulating what you need can help you decide if coaching or therapy is better for you.

There are times in life when you need something more than the support of friends and family. Perhaps you want help to break a habit or meet a goal. Or maybe you want to examine and resolve deeply personal issues with someone who will listen to you without judgment.

Whatever your motivation, it can help to talk to a professional. A UCLA study showed that when you verbalize your feelings, it makes them less intense. But who should you talk to? Would a life coach or a therapist be more appropriate?

Coaches are useful for people looking to reach a specific goal or break a habit, often in a particular area, like health or career. Therapists generally address long-term emotional issues or problems, like trauma, addiction, anxiety, and depression. But these are generalities, and often a therapist may act as a coach and a coach may offer therapeutic support. The best thing you can do is get clear on your needs and goals and then do the research to find the right coach or therapist for you.

Do You Need to Climb Out of a Hole or Climb a Mountain?
The Differences Between Therapy & Coaching

In the book Coaching for Transformation, coaching is defined as “a partnership that maximizes human potential.” Coaches focus on “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential,” according to the International Coach Federation (ICF), the oldest and largest professional coaching organization. This description also fits for most therapists, too.

The American Psychological Association defines a therapist as someone who “provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who is objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental.” Which is also true of most coaches.

Richard Michaels, a Gestalt therapist and a life and executive coach, says that while both modalities “work to increase awareness: self-awareness, self-understanding, and emotional awareness…. The role of the client is more active [in coaching]. In therapy, you have more interpretation of what’s going on and more focus on your family of origin.” He describes many of his clients as high-functioning individuals who are ready to go deeper in some part of their life.

Madhu Maron, a human resources professional who now works as a life coach, says, “The [coaching] client is really longing for a change–[they have] a persistent deep, important longing,” she says. “It’s something like, I want to be healthier, get a new job, or have a better relationship. They can be very effective in certain parts of their lives, but not effective in this one area.”

Therapist and life coach Lisa Marie Bobby explains the difference this way: if you are dealing with depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, emotional issues, or other problems that leave you feeling trapped in a hole, a therapist is probably the best person to help you climb out of it. Once you’re out of the hole and on level ground, a coach can help you climb whatever mountain you wish to climb, usually in an effort to improve your circumstances or have greater success in areas like career, relationships, or health.

Vetting a Coach or Therapist
Do Your Homework & Get Surprisingly Fast Results

Once you’ve identified if you need help getting out of the hole or are ready to climb a mountain, you’ll probably want to do some research and interview potential therapists and coaches to find someone who offers what you need. There are a wide range of therapies and coaching practices–being an informed client and asking questions up front to find the best match will save you a lot of time and money.

There are hundreds of styles of therapy, so if you don’t have the time or inclination to explore the options, you might begin with an online directory to find therapists near you or ask friends for recommendations.

Therapists refer to themselves in many different ways. To be a psychologist, psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, or social worker requires an advanced degree, and these titles are regulated. If someone is calling themselves by one of these titles, you know they have received at least a master’s degree and passed licensing requirements.

The titles “therapist,” “counselor,” and “psychotherapist” are not regulated and don’t require a license. This doesn’t mean all therapists are unlicensed; many of them are. It just means anyone can call themselves a therapist, so you may need to investigate someone’s credentials if they’re billing themselves as one.

Life coaches are not required to have any training. Many coaches complete training programs, and groups like the International Coaching Federation are working to standardize credentials in the field, but currently anyone can call themselves a coach.

To find a coach, begin with an online search for coaches who focus on the area you want to address. Ask friends and colleagues for recommendations. Most coaches (and many therapists) work remotely with clients via phone or Skype, so location is not necessarily an issue.

Whether you decide on therapy or coaching, results often come relatively quickly. One study found that most people feel better with about 10 therapy sessions, while another said that 88 percent of therapy participants reported improvements after one visit. So while it may take you some time to find the right coach or therapist, once you do you’re likely to notice changes fast.

The Amazing Way This NFL Team Just Stepped Up For Mental Health

The New York Jets may not be at the top of the NFL standings this season, but they’re certainly leading the charge when it comes to mental health advocacy.

Multiple Jets players sported lime green cleats for Project 375, a mental health organization founded by Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall, during Monday night’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. The show of support was part of a broader NFL initiative that allows players to support charities through footwear, My Cause My Cleats.

The cleats featured the Project 375 logo and the hashtag #MindOverMatter, which Marshall uses regularly on social media as a way to speak out about mental health. 

He hopes the shoes “free our world from the stigma that handcuffs us from helping those suffering,” he wrote on Instagram.

An estimated one in five adults in the U.S. will experience a mental health issue in a given year. However, despite the fact they’re so common, there’s still a negative stereotype surrounding the conditions.

The idea still persists that mental illness is something to joke about ― and it’s this viewpoint that often prevents those at risk from seeking professional treatment. And it’s stigma that’s exactly why public advocacy matters: Experts say celebrity awareness can help shatter some of those damaging misconceptions.

Marshall has been giving mental health a national platform for the past few years. After being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, he started Project 375 as a way to help those experiencing a mental health condition. He’s also given speeches and helped design other sportswear to support the cause.

We need to accept that mental illness is a disease — and like any other disease, it needs stronger research, early screening and treatment, especially for young people,” Marshall wrote in a Huffington Post piece in 2015. “We need more robust education in schools, the enlightened support of news and entertainment media, and the advocacy of high-profile figures, like myself, willing to step forward.”

Props to the NFL star for giving mental health the visibility it deserves. And stylishly, we might add.

Castro, The Mob And Capitalism’s Full Circle

The death of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro has provoked intense commentary, but one story we haven’t heard much about is how Castro’s rise brought about one of the greatest business reversals in the history of American capitalism – and, now, perhaps a comeback?

In the 1930s, with cash aplenty from Prohibition and gambling illegal in most of the United States, American gangland syndicates burned with twin desires: new investment opportunities and the chance for legitimacy.

New York-based racketeer, Meyer Lansky had wanted to “go legit” from the time he was a straight A student in grade school. Lansky, whose previously undiscovered diaries I first wrote about in 2001, fulfilled his dream in Cuba. Few people know that he bet almost everything he had on that hot-blooded island.

Cuba became a mob magnet because every illegal dollar stuffed into a suitcase on American soil became clean the minute a courier touched down in Havana, ninety miles off the coast of Florida. This transaction was captured in The Godfather Part II when Fredo Corleone brought such a suitcase for eventual delivery to Lansky’s movie avatar, Hyman Roth. Mob bosses could legally own entire hotel-casinos in Havana and even report income to the Internal Revenue Service. They could also hold legitimate jobs. Lansky’s salaried title at crown jewel of gambling palaces, the Riviera, was Kitchen Director. And, ever fussy about his customers’ satisfaction, he genuinely kept tabs on the food service, too.

Castro, born into wealth, cited the mob’s partnership with Cuban strongman Fulgencio Batista as a primary justification for his revolution against capitalism. To add insult to injury, when Castro descended upon Havana from the countryside in late 1958, his men literally brought pigs and other farm animals into the fancy American hotel-casinos.

When I spoke about the historical novel I wrote about Lansky in South Florida not long ago, I was approached not only by the children and grandchildren of Havana casino investors, but by passionate Cuban-Americans in exile who reminded me of their participation in the pre-Castro Cuban economy. Doctors, lawyers, restauranteurs, tailors, artists — Castro destroyed their livelihoods and their lives. Said one man, “Mr. Lansky drove rented Chevrolets and brought jobs. Fidel wore army fatigues for the cameras, but lived like a king, killed my friends and neighbors, and put everybody out of work. Fidel was the real gangster. Everything Lansky did is legal now.”

From the 1930s to the late 1950s, Lansky directed the inflow of tens of millions of dollars from the back alleys of American cities into Havana casinos like the Riviera, the Nacional and others. That was serious money in those days. The Cuban mob casinos reached their zenith in the late 1950s diverting funds away from Las Vegas, which held rewards, but also risks.

While the Las Vegas casinos were mob-controlled, on the heels of the Kefauver congressional hearings on the rackets, they had to operate under American law where the mobsters were considered “undesirables.” Most were banned not only from ownership but from even setting foot in casinos. Moreover, most of the mob’s income from Las Vegas came from “the skim,” cash illegally taken from the counting rooms and distributed, tax-free, to mob bosses. With a few exceptions, in Las Vegas, American gangsters were still criminals. In Havana they were shareholding partners and executives.

Lansky did not see himself as a gangster; he saw himself as a private equity manager from brutal origins who grew what was to become the mob’s biggest legal business: travel, tourism and gambling. He told friends and family he was no different from American moguls whose fortunes had had their provenance in illegal or questionable tactics. He named Rockefeller, Bronfman, Kennedy, Annenberg in particular. He secretly wanted but never received acceptance from the American power elite.

In Godfather II, Fredo’s suitcase never got to Hyman Roth. In real life, those suitcases found their way to Lansky who believed for too long that American power would overwhelm the rebels. It was a bad bet.

When Lansky died in 1983, it touched off a frantic search for his assets, valued by a muckraking reporter in the hundreds of millions. His family found none of it for a simple reason: They didn’t have it. Lansky and his partners like Vincent “Jimmy Blue Eyes” Alo had bet the house on Havana and lost it all. If you want to see their fortunes, go to Google maps and look up the Riviera and other hotels where they had interests, assets that would be worth billions today. As Lansky said after fleeing Havana — and nearly dying of a heart attack in an oxygen tent in Miami Beach — “I crapped out.”

The irony is that the very enterprises Lansky set in motion in Cuba are now likely to be that nation’s economic redemption. (Legalized gambling, by some measurements, is the fastest-growing industry in the world.) Some members of his family are seeking to recover his Cuban assets. The merits of their legal claims are unclear, but one thing is certain: Lansky’s long-term bet that his investments would be worth big money was prescient. It was Castro’s half-century reign of terror he hadn’t factored into his prospectus.

The Power of Choice

Have you ever met someone and felt a real connecting during the conversation? That’s how I felt when I chatted with this wife, mom, author and entrepreneur. Upon our initial introductions, I knew I needed to learn more about her and her offerings to the world.

Allow me to introduce you to Kate Butler.

Kate had a successful career in staffing and recruiting when she decided to branch out and start her on recruiting company. Almost immediately, it was successful. You would think that would be enough. She had a beautiful family and a thriving business. What more could she want? But the truth was, her business didn’t excite her. She found herself going through the motions of life and wasn’t really living. She knew there was a call on her life that was bigger. She wanted to be more than just a mom to her girls. She didn’t know why she had that ache, that longing for something more. She found herself on her knees in her daughter’s nursery.

She asked God to “show me something more. Show me the way.”

I knew I couldn’t walk back into the monotony of my life.

Kate knew her recruiting business didn’t feed her soul. But when she found herself coaching her candidates sharing with them the type of career they should have, she realized that wasn’t part of her business but really enjoyed it. So she launched Kate Butler Coaching.

We have Power of Choice

I gave myself permission to really dream again. Where all things were possible, how would I show up every day? From that place, books showed up and my coaching business.

During this crossroad, she realized that some of the teachings of the world were not what she wanted her children to learn. So she published her bestselling children’s book, More Than Mud. Through the process of writing her books, she found a mentor in Jack Canfield and began studying his teachings. Once she started implementing the success tools she learned from him, she gave herself 3 months to go all in and work her business. She realized she wasn’t creating happiness in the world and her happiness was tied to something else. People began to tell her she seemed different to them. So she reached to 5 of those people and offered transformational coaching to them. Her business began to organically grow from there.

So you might wonder what happened to her recruiting business since she had tapped into what she was called to do. I wondered the same thing. Kate still has that business. She understood that her recruiting business was a vertical to her next step.

One word that kept coming up for me during our conversation was authentic. In the coaching world, authenticity seems to be the buzz word of the day. But, Kate is the real deal. Her openness and willingness to share some of her struggles along with her successes was refreshing.

Kate describes how although we may live intentionally, sometimes a piece is missing. She offers a deep dive for people who are skimming the surface.

So what are some ways you can live intentionally?

What I learned from Kate in our brief discussion was to:

Set each day with an intention
. Before she gets on social media or responds to emails, she sets 3 things she wants to accomplish for the day and begin working on those things. This is not only for her business but her life. We often find ourselves responding and reacting to others before we meet our own needs.

Show your children life can be extraordinary.
One way is to live extraordinarily. Tap into those forgotten dreams.

You can choose your own joy.

Intention is more important than action.

So what are your forgotten dreams? Maybe they’re not forgotten, just delayed as mine have been. Ladies, it’s time to live extraordinarily. Dust those dreams off, set your intentions and make them happen. I know I will.

Lady Gaga Reveals She Has PTSD On ‘Today’ Show

Lady Gaga revealed in a “Today” segment that aired Monday that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, almost exactly two years after she opened up about being raped at the age of 19.

“I suffer from a mental illness — I suffer from PTSD. I’ve never told anyone that before, so here we are,” the singer said. 

“But the kindness that’s been shown to me by doctors — as well as my family and my friends — it’s really saved my life.” she added. “I’ve been searching for ways to heal myself, and I’ve found that kindness is the best way.”

The 30-year-old singer spoke to “Today” as part of the Share Kindness campaign, a partnership of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation and Today and NBC Universal. For the segment, Gaga visited the Ali Forney Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she spoke with homless LGBTQ youth.

“These children are not just homeless or in need. Many of them are trauma survivors. They’ve been rejected in some type of way,” she said. 

“I am no better than any of those kids. And I’m no worse than any of them,” she added. “We are equal. We both walk our two feet on the same earth. And we’re in this together.”

Gaga first revealed in 2014 that she had been raped as a teenager during an interview with “The Horward Stern Show.” At the time, she said she had waited to open up about the rape because she did not want it to “define” her.

Cecile Richards Or Tom Perez For DNC Chair

The Democrats desperately need a new national party leader, technically the chair of the Democratic National Committee. The current national committee, elected at the last Democratic convention based on the relative strengths of the Clinton and Sanders forces, is narrowly divided, and close to deadlock.

Rep Keith Ellison of Minnesota, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, an early favorite after Sanders endorsed him, now appears to be fading. Though Senator Chuck Schumer quickly jumped in and backed Ellison as part of Schumer’s repositioning as a progressive, there is pressure on Schumer and other early supporters to back off.

The biggest problem is that Ellison is a sitting Member of Congress, and national party chair ought to be a full time job. The best recent DNC chair, Howard Dean, who rebuilt a 50-state party in the mid-2000s, wanted the job back, but Sanders vetoed that because he felt Dean had been disrespectful to him. Dean has now dropped out.

Other objections have lately been raised, that Ellison is a Muslim and that he is not friendly to Israel. His religion is the wrong reason to challenge his candidacy, but the latest disclosures of remarks that alienated much of the Jewish community make sink Ellison as a party unifier.

In 2010, it recently emerged, Ellison spoke at a fund-raiser hosted by a past president of the Muslim American society. In the speech, referring to Israel. He declared, “We can’t let another country to treat us like we’re their ATM.” This is not entirely wrong as a description of Israel’s view of U.S. aid, but Ellison added:

“The United States foreign policy in the Middle East is governed by what is good or bad through a country of seven million people [Israel]. A region of 350 million all turns on a country of 7 million. Does that make sense? Is that logic? Right? When the Americans who trace their roots back to those 350 million [Muslims] get involved, everything changes.”

So while it is appalling to have Ellison’s candidacy founder for the sin of criticizing Israel, his language was pretty raw and Ellison is now probably too radioactive to get the job. No other contenders seem to have what it takes.

Here are two outside-the-box ideas for potential people to lead the national Democratic Party. Neither has declared a candidacy. This is just a citizen nomination, from me:

Cecile Richards.
The head of national Planned Parenthood, a job she’s held for a decade, is far and away one of the best organizers, on the ground and nationally, in the progressive Democratic universe, as well a prodigious fundraiser for progressive causes, a fighter and a genuine hero.

As a young adult, Richards was a labor organizer in the south. She did a brief stint as an aide to Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, and then headed a broad get-out-the vote coalition in 2004 called America Votes.

Tom Perez. Obama’s labor secretary and former assistant attorney general in charge of civil rights, is one of the best we’ve got. He is also a superb politician, with no immediate plans after January 20.

Perez is great at connecting to the working class — black, white, Latino. He served as the elected president of the Mongtomery County Council and many of his admirers were disappointed he passed up the chance to run for governor of Maryland.

Both of these leaders are charismatic, in their 50s, widely admired, and good at details as well as at rousing grass roots enthusiasm. As full time party leaders, either could re-energize a party in an understandable funk. None has Democratic enemies.

Both bridge the Clinton/Obama wing of the party with the now ascendant Warren/Sanders wing. Both are somewhat to the left of the Clintons ideologically, though Hillary was a Richards ally as a stalwart on reproductive rights. And Perez was one of the most progressive of Obama’s appointments.

The appointment of either one would sidestep a potentially divisive factional dispute, would look forward rather than backward, and unify the party behind a progressive leader.

As that old typing-drill sentence had it: Now is the time for all good men [and women] to come to the aid of the party. Lord knows, the party needs some fresh leadership.

The Power of Eloquence

Beautiful Words Have Power

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging symbol,” St. Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians two thousand years ago. “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that I can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor, and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” Paul bequeathed us faith, hope and love -these three — “but the greatest of these,” he said, “is love.”
Paul passed away, as we all must in our time, but he continues to enrich the human experience with his beautiful words that are timeless. It should be noted that when Paul spoke of love, he was not talking about romance between a man and a woman, but rather love for our fellow human beings. Interestingly, the scholars working for King James translated that key phrase as “faith, hope and charity” which I believe came closer to Paul’s meaning.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident,” wrote Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence two centuries ago, “that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Jefferson and his editors among the Founding Fathers toyed with that last one. Some wanted to say “life, liberty and property.” But they hesitated to assert that everyone was entitled by God to property. I am glad they chose “pursuit of happiness” instead of “pursuit of property,” for the words are beautiful in their vague simplicity. Like the words of St. Paul, they have stood the test of time and still inspire people.
Some are troubled by Jefferson’s eloquence about liberty because of his hypocrisy as a slave owner, and he was certainly aware of that even within the context of his own time. Jefferson knew slavery was evil and acknowledged as much, saying it alarmed him “like a fire bell in the night” as if he had foreseen the consequences that would ensue for that failure to deal with the worst blot on our nation’s history. That was left for another great wordsmith to deal with.
“Fourscore and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” opined Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863. “We are now engaged in a great Civil War testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.” He concluded his short address with the hope that “government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
St. Paul, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln shared a gift for beautiful words – constructing sentences that soar beyond mere communication to touch the heart and inspire humanity to rise above its mean estate. It is difficult to imagine President-elect Trump joining this company – tweets do not often sustain eloquence – but you never know. If he can summon President Reagan’s speechwriter Peggy Noonan back to Washington, anything is possible.

How To Break A Bad Habit — For Good

Have you ever tried to break a bad habit, only to give up in frustration? The problem isn’t that you’re weak or that the bad habit is too ingrained; in all likelihood, you just gave up too soon.

Researchers at University College, London, found that it takes 66 days for a new habit to form. Likewise, as long as there is no physical addiction involved, it takes 66 days for you to shake a bad habit. But before you can develop the motivation to stick it out for that long, you need to understand how bad habits form in the first place.

Bad habits are formed and reinforced via the habit loop. First, something triggers you to initiate an undesired behavior. Maybe you’re feeling stressed, so you decide to numb out on Facebook for an hour or eat a whole bag of Flamin’ Cheetos. The trigger event is whatever puts this idea in your head. The second step is the behavior itself. Your brain says, “Sure, you deserve some Flamin’ Cheetos,” so you dig in.

The third step — and this part is crucial — is the reward. The behavior has to reward you in some way. That doesn’t mean it’s good for you or that it’s smart, just that it does something that your brain likes. Numbing out on Facebook might help you forget your problems for a while or to put off something that you don’t want to do, and we all know, all too well, the reward that comes from eating a bag of junk food. For better or worse, these rewards increase the likelihood that you’ll repeat the behavior.

Once you repeat a behavior enough times, the habit loop becomes so automated that you don’t even think about it anymore. Instead of making a conscious decision to procrastinate, you just automatically pull up Facebook as soon as you sit down at your desk or you’re digging into the Cheetos before you even realize that you’re feeling stressed.

Once a habit becomes automatic, it’s a lot harder to break–and that’s why you’re probably failing if you’re not giving yourself 66 days to wean yourself off it.

Sixty-six days might seem like a long time, but there are specific stages you have to go through that will make the process feel much shorter. Let’s take a look at these.

Days 1-10: Look Inward

It’s usually pretty obvious which bad habits are causing the most problems in your life–the ones that keep coming up in performance appraisals or sparking arguments with your spouse. Once you’ve identified a habit to change, the real challenge lies in understanding your triggers, and that can be harder than it sounds, especially if the habit has become so ingrained that you do it subconsciously. If you give it enough thought, you’ll get to the bottom of it. Maybe you keep getting tickets for speeding, and you realize that you drive too fast when you leave work in a bad mood, or maybe you snack when you’re stressed. Looking inward to explore the source of the habit you’re trying to break makes breaking that habit possible. The first 10 days of trying to break the habit will provide substantial insight into the source of the habit, should you choose to look. Building self-awareness is critical to emotional intelligence, and your act of introspection will serve you in many ways beyond breaking your bad habit.

Days 11-40: Spread the Word

Accountability is crucial in breaking bad habits. In this stage, you create a very vocal accountability network by telling everybody you can about the habit you’re trying to break, and the more vocal you are about it, the more likely people are to call you out when you slip up. Let them know that you really want them to say something. Just remember that you might have to keep reminding them–it’s just as easy for them to forget and backslide as it is for you to do so.

Days 41-66: Mind Your Relapse Triggers

As you head for the home stretch, be ready to make some mistakes — it happens to everybody. Just be on the lookout for common threads running through those mistakes. If you tend to relapse in a certain situation, you’d be smart to avoid that trigger completely until you feel that your bad habit is really extinguished. Keeping your triggers from surprising you when it feels like you’ve kicked the habit is typically the difference between success and failure this late in the process.

Day 67: Reward Yourself

Sure, you could say that breaking the habit is its own reward, but why pass up an opportunity to celebrate? Just don’t celebrate by indulging in the habit you worked so hard to break! You should also use this opportunity to reflect and select the next habit you’re going to break.

Bringing It All Together

You’re not weak, stupid, or lazy if you have a hard time breaking bad habits. There are psychological factors that make this process challenging for everyone, but the very science behind what makes habits hard to break also provides a research-supported method for doing it. Focus on one habit at a time and follow these steps and the timetable that goes with them, and your chances of success will go through the roof.

Dakota Access Pipeline Protesters Hunker Down For Winter At Standing Rock

CANNON BALL, N.D., Dec 3 – In North Dakota, winter is most definitely coming.

That does not deter Dakota Access Pipeline protesters, many of whom say they know a blizzard earlier this week was but a taste of what is to come, as temperatures are expected to fall toward 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18°C).

Rather than retreat amidst the cold and an order from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to vacate by Monday, the Oceti Sakowin camp, the epicenter of pipeline opposition, is growing in size – and quickly winterizing in expectation of harsher weather.

Dozens of insulated tipis have popped up in recent weeks, adding to those that have dotted these barren plains since last summer. Yurts, a round tent popular in the cold tundra of East Asia, have started appearing. Portable toilets are being swapped out for heated, composting commodes. Ice cleats, which strap onto boots to give stability on ice, are now in demand.

Taylor Orpin, 23, quit her job to move to the camp last month. She spends her days collating donated coats by size and gender in a tent near the camp’s main fire circle.

“I’m very aware of what true cold is going to feel like,” said Orpin, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba. “Here, people are able to come in and just take whatever they need to stay warm.”

Thousands of people, led by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, are protesting the pipeline, which would carry crude oil from North Dakota to Illinois en route to the Gulf of Mexico.

The route is adjacent to the Standing Rock reservation, and the tribe and climate activists say the line risks contamination of the tribe’s water source and its construction has damaged, and would further damage, sacred sites.

While clothing, food and money have been pouring in from all over the world, the camp’s website requests more donations of wood, blankets, winter sleeping bags and propane to help weather the winter.

A division of labor keeps many active, with campers volunteering in the four kitchens, shoveling snow, building tents and doing myriad other tasks.

The multitudes at the camp defy the predictions of state and local officials, many of whom said out-of-state protesters would flee south like migrating birds. Children can be seen sliding playfully down nearby hills while senior citizens gossip over fire pits.

“It’s a scare tactic, saying it’s too cold to be here,” said Gemma Akins, 36, a Reiki healer – a form of stress reduction – from Colorado.

North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple issued an evacuation order for the camp earlier this week, citing the weather. That followed the Army Corps’ earlier decree to vacate the camp, which is on federal land, by Monday. The state is not going to enforce that order, and voluntary compliance doesn’t look likely.

“I have zero experience with the cold,” said Jess Weiner, 29, of Los Angeles, who arrived Thursday. “But I love the adrenaline of being here.”

DONATIONS AND SKILLS

It’s not clear how much money has been raised to build and sustain the camp since it was founded last spring, but estimates stand in the millions of dollars. The protests started attracting more attention in the late summer, particularly after clashes between activists and private security hired by Energy Transfer Partners, which is building the line.

The Obama Administration has twice delayed approval for ETP to tunnel the pipeline under the Missouri River. This one-mile stretch is the last unfinished spot on the line in North Dakota.

The Three Affiliated Tribes of the MHA Nation, another large American Indian tribe in North Dakota, earlier this fall funded portable toilets, food and garbage removal. Even though they have earned billions from the extraction of oil and gas from their lands, the MHA have supported the Standing Rock protest.

U.S. postal locations in nearby Bismarck and Fort Yates have been engulfed with donated packages. Three UPS delivery locations in Bismarck have processed more than 5,000 packages in recent weeks. A UPS spokesman said the number well exceeds what is usual for the area.

Financial support, including more than $ 500,000 alone for a veterans rally this weekend at the camp, have been pouring in through GoFundMe and other crowdfunding websites.

Beyond donations, Hollywood actors like Shailene Woodley and Susan Sarandon have visited North Dakota, though they are not currently at the camp.

Some campers bring technical skills. Joshua Tree, 42, has helped install solar panels and wind turbines to power a white, dome-like structure that dwarfs everything else here. The dome, which organizers say can hold 380 people, is where most meetings and press events are held.

“We wanted to help the best way we can. And that’s setting up solar power and wind power,” said Tree.

As the group tries to ward off the cold, challenges loom. One family had to be hospitalized on Thursday due to carbon monoxide poisoning after attempting to heat a tent using propane without proper ventilation. That feeds concern from law enforcement that protesters don’t respect the weather.

“These are people who don’t yet understand what cold is,” Wayne Stenehjem, North Dakota’s attorney general, told Reuters.

Signs posted around the camp note there are 18 different communal sleeping areas that are warmer than personal tents.

“We cannot stress how cold it’s going to get,” the posting reads. “Don’t be in a small tent or your car and think you’ll be OK. Let’s all look after each other.”

5 Things That Will Make You Much Happier

There’s enough advice on happiness floating around out there to make your head spin. Yet, this is understandable, as everyone is different. What makes one person happy might make another miserable.

In the face of so much contradictory, and often subjective, advice, what are you supposed to do if you want to live a happier life? Just forget about all that subjective advice and focus your energy and attention on science-proven facts.


“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama

UCLA neuroscience researcher Alex Korb has spent a great deal of time studying the effects of different happiness strategies on the brain. His findings have a lot to teach us about what actually works when it comes to boosting happiness.

Korb’s research demonstrated that your thoughts–and the emotions you feel in response to those thoughts–have a profound impact on surprising areas of your brain.

Guilt and shame, for example, activate the brain’s reward center, which explains why we have such a strong tendency to heap guilt and shame upon ourselves. Likewise, worrying increases activity in the prefrontal cortex (the rational brain), which is why worrying can make you feel more in control than doing nothing at all.

1. Gratitude creates happiness. I’m not advocating worry, guilt, and shame as the path to happiness. The illustration shows why we tend to succumb to thoughts that fuel these emotions. The real neural antidepressant is gratitude. Gratitude boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine–the brain’s happy chemicals and the same chemicals targeted by antidepressant medications. The striking thing about gratitude is that it can work even when things aren’t going well for you. That’s because you don’t actually have to feel spontaneous gratitude in order to produce chemical changes in your brain; you just have to force yourself to think about something in your life that you appreciate. This train of thought activates your brain to make you feel happier.

2. Labeling negative feelings dilutes their power. There is an amazing amount of power in simply labeling your negative emotions. In one study, participants underwent fMRI scans of their brains while they labeled negative emotions. When they named these emotions, the brain’s prefrontal cortex took over and the amygdala (where emotions are generated) calmed down. This effect doesn’t just work with your own emotions; labeling the emotions of other people calms them down too, which is why FBI hostage negotiators frequently rely on this technique.

3. Making decisions feels good. Similar to naming emotions, making decisions engages the prefrontal cortex, which calms the amygdala and the rest of the limbic system. The key is to make a “good enough” decision. Trying to make the perfect decision causes stress. We’ve always known that, but now there’s scientific research that explains why. Making a “good enough” decision activates the dorsolateral prefrontal areas of the brain, calming emotions down and helping you feel more in control. Trying to make a perfect decision, on the other hand, ramps up ventromedial frontal activity–which basically means your emotions get overly involved in the decision-making process.

4. It helps you to lend a hand.Taking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy but also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support to others were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you aren’t overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness.

5. Our brains are wired for touch. Humans are social animals, to the point that our brains react to social exclusion in the same way that they react to physical pain, with activity in the anterior cingulate and insula. Similarly, our brains are hardwired to interpret touch as social acceptance. Touch is one of the primary stimuli for releasing oxytocin, which calms the amygdala and, in turn, calms emotions. There are even studies that show that holding hands with a loved one actually reduces the brain’s response to pain. You might think that’s bad news for people who are socially isolated, but studies show that a massage increases serotonin by as much as 30%. Touch reduces stress hormones, decreases the perception of pain, improves sleep, and reduces fatigue.

Bringing It All Together

Kolb’s research highlights just how amazing the brain is, and he summarized his findings succinctly when he said, “Everything is interconnected. Gratitude improves sleep. Sleep reduces pain. Reduced pain improves your mood. Improved mood reduces anxiety, which improves focus and planning. Focus and planning help with decision-making. Decision-making further reduces anxiety and improves enjoyment. Enjoyment gives you more to be grateful for, which keeps that loop of the upward spiral going. Enjoyment makes it more likely you’ll exercise and be social, which, in turn, makes you happier.”

We’ll Remember Cuba’s Ebola Compassion Long After Castro’s Death

While the Cuban government’s accomplishments and failures are still being tallied in the days following Fidel Castro’s death on Nov. 25, the island nation’s health care system is one achievement expected to stand the test of history. 

One striking example of the country’s unique health footprint: For a nation with only 11 million people, Cuba sent an unparalleled number of medical personnel to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2014.

When Ebola spread through West Africa in 2014, Cuba announced that it would send more than 460 doctors and nurses to West Africa. The epidemic ultimately killed 11,310 people, more than any previous outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Ultimately Cuba deployed approximately 265 medical personnel to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, according to the World Health Organization.

For comparison’s sake, in November 2014, President Obama promised just 65 health professionals, supported by 4,000 U.S. troops. (WHO said it’s difficult to track actual personnel deployed from the U.S. because they weren’t a unified group like the Cubans were. Americans may have volunteered with nongovernmental organizations, for example.)

“[Cuba] has become something like the world’s first responder to international crises in recent years,” Jon Lee Anderson wrote in The New Yorker in 2014. Indeed, Cuba’s 50,000 roving medical professionals stationed in more than 60 countries are often the first foreign health workers at catastrophes around the world. Cuban doctors, for example cared for almost 40 percent of victims during Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake, according to The Guardian. The deployments are the result of a longtime Cuban program to send health care workers abroad as a way to boost its image and to trade services for goods for the embargoed island.

The Cuban medical response is built on a larger culture of population health. Cuban doctors practice prevention-oriented primary care and are responsible for improving the overall health of their patient populations. Cuba also has one of the best doctor-to-population ratios in the world, meaning the country spends far less money per person on health care costs than does the United States, but it boasts a better child mortality rate and similar life expectancy

According to the World Bank, in 2010 Cuba had 6.7 doctors per 1,000 people, compared with the United States’ 2.5 doctors per 1,000 people.

“Unlike students trained in the U.S. or Western Europe, Cuban students are trained to improve population health status,” Dr. C. William Keck, professor emeritus at Northeast Ohio Medical University, previously told The Huffington Post. 

“We certainly aren’t here. When I went to medical school, I was taught to do battle with disease one patient at a time. You dealt with what came in the door. You didn’t focus much on the community. It’s a much different approach,” said Keck, who is a member of the Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba, a nonprofit that promotes U.S.-Cuba health collaborations.

That dedication to community health extends beyond Cuba’s borders. 

“We know what can happen. We know we’re going to a hostile environment,” Cuban doctor Leonardo Fernandez told Reuters before he left to fight Ebola in West Africa in 2014.

“But it is our duty. That’s how we’ve been educated. This little bit that we have, when people need it, we are capable of sharing. It’s a basic concept.”
