Homelessness In NYC Hits Record High With Nearly 60,000 People In Shelters

Homelessness in New York City has hit a record high, but government officials say those figures could have been much worse.

The number of people living in homeless shelters operated by the Department of Homeless Services is about to surpass 60,000 people for the first time, The New York Daily News reported Friday. But officials say that figure would have reached 67,000 people this year if not for the government’s recent programs, according to a DHS press release.

“Our current programs have substantially slowed the rate of growth in homelessness,” Steven Banks, commissioner of the Department of Social Services, said in a statement.

But even with the “slowed” rate, the current figures mark a 115 percent increase in homelessness over the past two decades, according to DHS.

The Coalition for the Homeless, which works to end homelessness in New York City, said the figure surpassed the 60,000 mark in 2014, but that group calculates its statistics differently.

In addition to DHS safe havens, the Coalition for the Homeless counts stabilization beds, veterans beds and families in Housing Prevention and Development emergency shelters. Doing this helps the numbers “remain consistent over time,” Giselle Routhier, the group’s policy director, told The Huffington Post in an email.

Despite the continued increase, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration is standing by the effectiveness of its new initiatives.

Those initiatives include a new rental assistance program, which helped about 40,000 people avoid or move out of shelters. De Blasio’s administration also spent $ 62 million on legal services, up from $ 6.4 million in the 2013 fiscal year.

Still, some advocates say the efforts don’t match the magnitude of the problem.

“While the city’s programs to move thousands from shelters into permanent housing have kept the numbers from being far worse, the response must match the scale of need,” Routhier said, adding that the city needs to step up its efforts.

New York City should allocate a greater share of its public housing for homeless people, Routhier said. She would like to see the city invest more in preventing evictions and also “crack down” on landlords who refuse to accept rental vouchers and programs for homeless people.

On a state level, Routhier and other advocates are frustrated about the delays in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s affordable housing plan.

Cuomo signed a budget in April that included $ 2 billion for affordable housing. The plan was expected to roll out soon after, but only $ 150 million was released in June because the Assembly and the Senate couldn’t agree on how to divide the funds. Albany won’t deal with the rest of the money until next year, Crain’s New York reports.

The essence of the issue remains: The cost of rent in New York City is rising faster than residents’ incomes. Fifty-six percent of renters spend more than one-third of their income on rent, according to DHS.

The de Blasio administration said it’s continuing to combat the issue by building additional shelters where there’s the most need.

Homeless individuals and families often have to move away from their communities, friends, jobs and schools in order to access shelters, which further exacerbates the problem. The de Blasio administration said it plans to invest in building additional shelters around the city.

The goal is to “ensure that families and individuals can maintain the community connections that will help them leave shelter as soon as possible,” Banks said in a statement.

Are Celebrities Doomed For More Breakups Than Most Of Us?

Are celebrities doomed for more breakups than most of us? It’s hard not to ask yourself that question when you stand in line at the supermarket staring at the gossip magazines!

“Brangelina… IT’S OVER!”

“After 11 years, Liev and Naomi are calling it quits”

2016-09-30-1475252471-5258334-CelebritiesNaomi.jpg

Liev and Naomi at the Venice Film Festival premiere of “The Bleeder” on Sept.2. (Claudio Oronati / EPA)

And the list goes on… Listen, we’re not sure if celebrities are more prone to breakups than the common mortal. What we know for sure though, for having been down that road in our “former lives,” is that a separation after many years in a relationship is heart breaking, especially when it involves children.

Celebrities are human beings. They too can suffer from a broken heart. And the reasons that trigger their breakups are no different than ours. It’s demanding careers. It’s new personal interests. It’s family life pressure or even health issues. It’s cheating. It’s a lack of communication. It’s loss of trust. All of these are issues that don’t usually just blow up. They’re more like a balloon that’s been seeping air for a long time. After a while, it becomes deflated. So, is there a cure for all of this, a way to prevent deflategate (sorry Tom!…) in a relationship?

Regardless of how toxic a relationship has become, one of the major reason people continue to hold on, is the fact that they have a shared history. A history made of kids, friends, family, and all sorts of memories. A history that once started with a “vision.”

When you look at “successful couples,” the ones that seem to go through thick and thin together, they all seem to have one key fundamental in place. They have a compelling, aspirational and clear vision of what they intend to aim for together. That’s what makes them stronger, inspire them to move forward, guard them against futile arguments and events that start maliciously to seep their air.

In short, their crystallized vision serves many purposes but the primary one helps them remember “why” they are together at the first place. (For more on Couple’s Visions, check out our post “4 Principles To Help You Become A Power Couple”)

However, when a relationship never had a real common vision and a lot of damage has already been done, the harsh truth is, sometimes it may be more harmful for the couple to stay together. And let’s also look at another reality: a breakup is a time to reflect on the relationship and make an honest self-assessment before jumping into another one. Every romantic setback is an opportunity for a life-changing comeback.

As for Liev and Naomi, it appears that they are moving on individually with their lives. In a statement the former couple said that they were looking forward to co-parenting their boys and “exploring this new phase of our relationship.” We wish them all the best.

California Is The First State To Require Spiritual Care In Health Care

2016-09-30-1475261283-5794785-california.jpg

If you get sick in California, and you are covered by the state’s Medi-Cal health insurance, you will be pleased to know that your health care just got better. California is the first state to recognize that spiritual care is a standalone discipline in health care and a trained and certified palliative care chaplain must be available for any patient who wants one. Spirituality, defined in the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care is a “fundamental aspect of compassionate, patient-and family-centered care that honors the dignity of all persons.”

The California Department of Health Care Services policy now calls for a palliative care team to meet the physical, medical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual needs of you and your family; and recommends that the team include, but is not limited to a doctor of medicine or osteopathy, a registered nurse and/or nurse practitioner, a social worker, as well as a chaplain.

But before you jump to the conclusion, as people often do, that the word chaplain means religion, understand that trained and certified health care chaplains care for people of any and all religious persuasions as well as those who are not religious. Their work is about providing spiritual and emotional comfort. A chaplain can help you talk about your concerns, help you communicate with doctors, and bring a sense of calm to situation that worries or frightens you. A health care chaplain can provide a calm reassurance and source of strength.

Palliative care is specialized medical care that focuses on providing relief from the symptoms as well as the stress of a serious illness. It helps you gain the strength to carry on with daily life and improve your quality of life. A specially trained team works together with your doctors to provide an extra layer of support. By spending time with you, the team will give you and your family control over your care by truly exploring your goals and helping you to understand treatment options.

According to Dr. Sean Morrison, professor of palliative medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, and co-author of a 2015 article “Palliative Care for the Seriously Ill” in the New England Journal of Medicine, patients getting palliative care are more involved in decisions, may avoid expensive procedures, and may have fewer emergency room visits. Dr. Morrison also states that palliative care programs have grown by more than 150 percent over the past decade.

While palliative care teams do operate in many hospitals around the country, California is the only state where it is now required by law that a chaplain to be part of the team. The Joint Commission, the major accreditor of American hospitals, urges all hospitals to deliver palliative care to Americans suffering from chronic and serious illnesses.

Wherever you live, when you are facing hospitalization, you and your family need to ask if palliative care is available. Explain to your doctor what quality of life means to you. This may include being able to spend time with family members, having pain and symptoms treated, being able to make your own decisions for care and where you want to be treated, at home or in the hospital. Ask your doctor if those needs can be met.

This is crucial at a time when the palliative care field is expanding to include not only those facing end-of-life situations but all individuals receiving treatments that relieve difficult symptoms of illnesses that are not easily cured, or for which there is no current cure. In such cases, treatments focus on providing comfort and improving quality of life for the patent and family. This type of palliative care is likely to grow exponentially in the coming decades; the Center to Advance Palliative Care estimates that by 2020 there will be 157 million people living with at least one chronic illness. Support and counseling by spiritual care professionals assist not only people with chronic or fatal conditions, but their family caregivers as well, who often face enormous challenges in caring for loved ones while maintaining their own lives and livelihoods.

A 2014 consensus report by the nationally-acclaimed Institute of Medicine, noted that “ideally, health care should harmonize with social, psychological and spiritual support to achieve the highest possible quality of life for people of all ages with serious illnesses or injuries.” The report also stated that frequent assessment of a patient’s spiritual wellbeing, and attention to a patient’s spiritual and religious needs, should be among the core components of quality end-of-life care across all settings and providers.

The California Department of Health Care Services leads the way in recognizing the valuable contribution of chaplains and the provisions of spiritual care in palliative care. Hopefully this serves as a model that all states will soon follow for the good of patients and their families.

People Actually Stopped Watching Porn During The First Presidential Debate

As a record number of Americans tuned in to Monday night’s presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, one major pornographic website saw its traffic sharply drop.

Compared to an average Monday, Pornhub.com reported that its traffic fell by 16 percent at 9 p.m. Eastern time this Monday ― the moment the televised debate kicked off. Traffic then recovered to normal levels as the debate wrapped up.

During the debate, Pornhub.com saw traffic from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia drop the most, with a 21 percent decline for each location. Meanwhile, traffic from Mississippi, Alaska and Hawaii changed the least, with just a 4 percent drop. Many of the states with the biggest drops in traffic to the porn site either traditionally vote Democratic or are swing states.

The official platform of the Republican Party states that “pornography, with its harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the lives of millions.” During the Republican National Convention in July, Pornhub.com reported seeing a 4.2 percent increase in traffic.

Sometimes, though, candidates blur the lines between politics and pornography: Earlier this year, Trump alluded to the size of his penis during one of the Republican presidential debates.

Monday night’s debate drew an estimated 84 million views, according to preliminary Nielson data, making it the most-watched in history.

WATCH: Acting As Though You Have Nothing Better to Do

If you could be honest with yourself, how much time do you spend on things that don’t really contribute to either your personal or professional goals? If it’s more than you care to acknowledge, it’s not that you should be ashamed… but it’s good to be aware – and then make a change. You deserve better, and so does the world at large.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

These Parents Want You To Get ‘Mad As Hell’ About Pediatric Cancer

Like most 4-year-olds, Phoebe Dooley loves toys, animals and stories. She has a wild imagination, a great sense of humor and a wisdom beyond her years. Her favorite color is pink.

Unlike most 4-year-olds, Phoebe is battling an aggressive brain cancer that is notoriously difficult to treat.

With the help of an altruistic photographer, Phoebe’s parents want to shine a light on their daughter’s story and encourage people to donate to cancer research.

On March 22, 2016, Phoebe was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a brain tumor that affects approximately 300 children in the U.S. each year. Her parents, both doctors, had noticed her eyes crossing and head turning slightly when she watched television and brought her to an eye doctor. Though the doctor felt nothing was wrong with Phoebe, he recommended a precautionary MRI, which revealed the tumor in her brain stem.

At their first consultation, Phoebe’s neuro-oncologist shared information about DIPG with her parents, Sarah and Cole. “It’s actually one of the worst kinds,” Cole told The Huffington Post. “It carries a vary grim prognosis. Phoebe’s doctor told us that there have been no significant improvements in the treatment of this disease since the 1960s.”

Because of the tumor’s location in the brain stem, surgery is generally not an option, so the standard treatment is about six weeks of radiation, after which many kids experience tumor shrinkage and decrease of symptoms. Cole explained that this “honeymoon period” generally lasts a number of months.

“Unfortunately, there is no known cure and the tumor will come back,” the dad explained, adding that there is little to be done once the symptoms return.

“Children affected by this tumor eventually lose the ability to speak, eat, swallow, move their limbs,” said Cole. “It grows in an area that controls the heart rate and breathing, and they eventually succumb to this disease. They are mentally aware of what is happening to them and must feel like they are ‘trapped in a body’ that isn’t working as it should.”

The average life expectancy for a child with DIPG is about 9 months from diagnosis. “We were now living every parent’s worst nightmare,” said Cole.

Following Phoeobe’s diagnosis, the Dooleys embarked on a difficult journey. Phoebe had an infusaport implanted in her body so that she could receive daily sedatives for her radiation treatments. She also started taking steroids to help decrease swelling in the brain, a common side effect of radiation. Soon after, she started her radiation treatments, five days a week for six weeks.

“This was a really difficult time because Phoebe got significantly worse during radiation initially,” Cole recalled. She experienced leg pain to the point of refusing to walk, stopped playing with her toys and spent most of her time sitting and lying down to watch TV or sleep. The steroids gave her a voracious appetite, and her body weight doubled in about three weeks.

“She essentially went from a little girl that loved to run and jump, endlessly played with her toys, and seemed to have no limit to a little girl that did absolutely nothing,” Cole said. “We were terrified that she was actively dying at this point in time.”

The dad said the whole treatment process was incredibly scary for everyone, especially Phoebe. “We would have to wake her up at 6:15 a.m. every morning. We would load her up in the car in her pajamas and she would cry inconsolably most days before her treatment,” he said. “She didn’t really know what was happening to her, but she would tell us she was ‘scared’ and did not like it when they gave her the ‘sleepy medicines.’”

After the family received Phoebe’s diagnosis, a friend put them in touch with Stacey Steinberg, a well-known family photographer in the Gainesville, Florida area, where the Dooleys live. Stacey has photographed kids facing heartbreaking medical circumstances for her “Shared Hope Project” and volunteered her services to the family. She photographed Phoebe on May 13 ― the last day of her radiation treatment at University of Florida Health.

“It had been a pretty intense, dark time for us,” Cole recalled. “We would arrive at the hospital at around 7 a.m. daily for six weeks, she would be sedated and then have her treatment. We started to see improvement towards the end of the six weeks and wanted Stacey to capture the last day of treatment.”

By that time, Phoebe had started having energy again and wanted to play. “It seemed every day, we were seeing more of the ‘old Phoebe’ coming back to us,” said Cole. “We felt reassured that we had made the right choice to endure all that we had with radiation because it seemed we would get more time with her ― not just time, but quality time.”

After radiation, Phoebe started a clinical trial at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where she received an oral chemotherapy drug that targets DIPG tumors. Since June, the Dooleys have been traveling back and forth to Cincinnati for monthly visits.

“We went into this realizing that it would not likely be a cure, but maybe it would slow growth down to allow us more time,” Cole said. Being in Cincinnati comes with the added benefit of being closer to family, as all of their immediate relatives live in the Midwest.

Phoebe continued to improve each day, with her post-radiation scan showing significant tumor shrinkage and her July MRI indicating the tumor was “stable.” Over the past two weeks, however, she started showing small signs of change for the worse. An MRI on Sept. 22 confirmed slight tumor growth.

“Although she’s still very active, happy, and playful, the news was devastating,” Cole said. “We have felt like we are racing against a ‘ticking clock’, and now it feels even worse knowing the tumor has had some slight growth. We know the statistics are not good.”

The Dooleys plan to continue the chemotherapy drug trial as long as they can in hopes of delaying further tumor growth.

Today, Sarah and Cole are on a mission to fight Phoebe’s cancer and to raise funds and awareness. They started an organization called Face Kids’ Cancer to encourage people to donate.

They want Stacey’s photos of Phoebe to play a role in the cause. “We really hope though that people see these and it makes them want to do something, to change something, and commit to it,” said Cole. “We hope that Stacey’s photos make people aware of this problem and help get pediatric cancer the attention that so many other types of cancers now have.”

Each year, approximately 16,000 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer, and an almost 2,000 of those kids die from the disease. It is the leading cause of death by disease for children past infancy. Yet only four percent of federal funding for cancer research is allocated specifically to pediatric cancer.

“Pediatric cancer is not something that people talk about,” Cole said. “As we said before, our family story is every family’s worst nightmare. People do not want to realize that children can die from disease. So these photos do something invaluable … they get people talking.”

The dad also emphasized that no one is immune to the possibility of this devastating diagnosis. “We have tried to do everything ‘right,’” he said. “She only eats grass fed beef, organic food and loves fruits and vegetables. We avoided red dye, unhealthy carbohydrates, candy/juice and only give her whole grains. She is one of the healthiest eating children we have ever seen.”

Ultimately, Cole said they do not want people to “just get sad” at the sight of Stacey’s photos. “A lot of people see these and are paralyzed,” he said. “I hope people will find a way to get involved, help a family that is struggling, donate to pediatric cancer research.”

In fact, Cole wants people to “get really mad.” He said, “I hope that they see the brave little kids fight these diseases with fewer resources. Frankly, I hope people get mad as hell.”

Cole and Sarah also support Stacey’s mission to capture some of the beauty in the dark circumstances of cancer. The dad explained:

“We hope they see how strong little kids with illnesses are. We hope they see that little kids that are sick don’t let being sick define them. When a sick child is faced with the same circumstances that would make an adult sleep or stay in bed, the kid will keep playing. They are stronger than anyone thinks, and a lot of time they are much wiser than you would normally see in the same age child. We hope that people see Phoebe’s strength, her beauty, her grace despite all that is happening.”

For her part, Phoebe is still fighting and amazing everyone around her. “Our daughter is very tender-hearted,” said Cole. “When she looks at you, she has a way of looking into your soul. She has a way of capturing the hearts of everyone she meets. She has a beautiful soul and has been a fighter since day one.”

Admiring his daughter’s strength, he added, “We picked the name Phoebe because it means ‘radiant light.’ It turned out that it fits perfectly.”

Donald Trump Said U.S. Airports Are ‘Third World.’ Here Are 11 Reasons He’s Wrong.

Our jaws dropped when Donald Trump attacked U.S. airports out of the blue during the presidential debate Monday night.

Our airports are like from a Third World country,” Trump ranted. “You land at LaGuardia, you land at Kennedy, you land at LAX, you land at Newark, and you come in from Dubai and Qatar and you see these incredible ― you come in from China, you see these incredible airports, and you land ― we’ve become a Third World country.”

Whoooa there, Don. Let’s lay off developing nations. Secondly, a mass transit terminal is not exactly the best measure of a country: North Korea also has a gorgeous new airport, for example, but its human rights policies aren’t so hot. Thirdly, U.S. airports have lots of incredible and innovative perks and features that make travel a happier, less stressful, more culturally exciting experience. Maybe you miss them when you only fly private?

Take these, for starters:

1. The stunning public art program at Miami International Airport.

From the sound-filled glass installation above to colorful abatement walls to striking walls of coral, art cheerfully welcomes visitors from all over as they enter the U.S..

2. These sound-proof napping suites in Atlanta, Philadelphia and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airports.

Tired travelers can pay by the hour to rent a personal oasis with a pullout trundle bed, desk and flatscreen TV.

3. The sustainable outdoor organic farm at John F. Kennedy Airport.

The best part about this blue potato and herb farm: It uses food waste recycled from terminals below

4. San Francisco International’s epic yoga room…

Get your zen on in this room with tons of stretching mats, right in the middle of the terminal.

5. …and its fleet of cuddling terminal dogs.

The only job of these therapy-trained pups is to make traveling more delightful.

6. This best darn slice of New York pizza you’ll ever taste at LaGuardia Airport.

A photo posted by Brittany (@thetipsytable) on

Artichoke Basille’s pizza makes a perfect pre-flight treat ― and they don’t have it in Dubai.

7. Salt Lake City International’s impeccable on-time rate.

Never mind new and pretty: being on time is truly the most important thing we ask of an airport anyway, right?

8. Trees, skylights, fountains and the occasional bird at Denver International Airport.

This spacious, soothing airport environment is coupled with a super efficient train between terminals.

9. Rocking chair sunsets at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Seattle isn’t the only U.S. airport with this relaxing seating option, but its views have got to be the best.

10. This incredibly low-key fire pit at Long Beach Airport.

The eco-friendly terminal features plenty of outdoor seating space. Luxurious!

11. And the impeccable food options at Newark Liberty International Airport. (Vanilla cotton candy, anyone?)

There you have it. Trump, we urge you to quit hating on our terminals and embrace the message of yet another public art installation at Miami International Airport:

Life Lesson From The Pan Man

It’s 10 am on a January day that’s colder than what I’m used to. Maybe it’s because of the ocean breeze that’s whipping my hair around my face like free formed streams of ice. It could be that everyone is moving around me. There’s bundled up vacationers briskly walking in front of me on the beach, sandpipers scurrying from the rolling waves, and my hands are gripping the mallets tightly as the pinging sound of my steel drums gets lost in the rushing sounds arounds me. This morning is freeze framed in my soul. It was a different world on the beach that day. The sounds, the movement, the uniqueness of being a street performer when I was 9 years old made an impact on me. It was a humbling impact, not only because when you look out over the ocean and experience a oneness as your own compass but also how insignificant but grand a person can be. Imagine playing two ginormous steel drums alone as a child there while people walk past you – sometimes smiling, usually not. A homeless man next to me carrying a conversation with me during my breaks and his own conversation to himself while I play. I fell for the steel drums that day but also for the lifestyle that it portrayed. A lifestyle of humbleness, freedom, musical sovereignty and at the end when I was breaking down to go home — I realized… after repeating four songs over for three hours — which may be why the homeless man was talking to himself, is I needed a teacher.

Kelvin Hart was ancient. That was my first thought when I saw this wiry Trinidad man. When reading “To Hell with Dying” by Alice Walker, the character Mr. Sweet is described as being a “tall thinnish man with thick kinky hair going white.” I could not think of a better description for Kelvin. The second thought going through my head when I met Kelvin was regret. I was regretting learning and as our lesson progressed — I kept on regretting it. Kelvin spoke softly and very quick with a strong Trinidad accent, making him next to impossible to understand. Besides the verbal communication issue was the way he taught music — by ear. I was to memorize the song he played for me. I don’t think I got a single note right during the first lesson and if one was to ask who had more regret at the end of the lesson — we’d both say it was a tossup! The following lessons we learned from each other and as the months went by, I don’t know who looked forward to the lessons more — I’d say it was a tossup! I became his protégé, the student he bragged about with the other steel pan band members from his band, the Pepper Pot. I found out later, they’d practice behind his small white frame home, in a patch of dirt by the carport and in between the practice sessions, the conversations sprinkled with progress of the little protégé. When I gave him a copy of Tiger Beat Magazine that featured Justin Bieber on the cover and a feature article about me, he was ecstatic!

I asked Kelvin a few times about his experiences as a steel drum performer. Like many older people I talked to over the years, the past in not something they wish to dwell on. They don’t want accolades for surviving it and they don’t want a medal for the success they experienced with their achievements. Kelvin talked about his winning the coveted steel drum competitions in Trinadad as a boy like he asked for coffee in the morning: briefly and in a monotone voice. But one day, he added to the time long ago in his homeland, “I won two years and each time I had to run. I was always running with my pans.” If one looked at the pans, they aren’t something you can run easily with besides being large, they are also heavy. Sometimes understanding Kelvin you had to understand what he didn’t say. Kelvin came from Trinidad where one in five people live below the poverty level. Kelvin had to run with his pans so he could keep them from being stolen.
Over the next year, there were many more lessons. Some I was comfortable with and others were difficult. Kelvin was a tough teacher and sometimes I wanted to tell him I was good enough. I wasn’t planning on making a career of steel drum performing. However, the lessons with Kelvin were synonymous with Mitch Albom’s Tuesday with Morrie. If everyone had a Morrie in their life, they would be a more humble person. They would be a more understanding person. They would be just better. By this time, I had plenty of gigs I was doing, I was in most of the local papers at least once, dozens of radio interviews, a few magazines and I was feeling well accomplished in the steel drum world. My street performing had led to starting my own radio show when I was 11 years old and Kelvin was proud. I performed at a rowdy local beach bar called Ocean Deck in Daytona Beach, FL and behind me on the tiny stage was an old picture of Kelvin and his Pepper Pot band. I told Kelvin about it at our next lesson and he just looked down and gave a little laugh. His pride in me kept me going with the lessons. I wanted him to see that his belief in me was justified. That I did it.

2016-09-28-1475070910-9973136-FullSizeRender44.jpg

The holidays are always a busy time and as the 2011 year ended, I had interviews I was doing for my radio show and it was a normally frantic time. I opted not to have the steel drum lessons during the holidays thinking Kelvin probably had some gigs and it was all for the good. My mother received a call on January 8, 2012 and it was Kelvin’s wife. Kelvin had died and would I be able to play at his funeral. The moment of regret tastes acrid in one’s mouth. It freezes the bones. I didn’t know what to say, what to do, who to blame. I wanted to blame Kelvin for dying, me for not having the next lesson, everyone else for giving me a ridiculously busy holiday schedule. I didn’t know what to do and was too scared to want to perform at his funeral but I said yes, because Kelvin would have wanted me to be there. Then we received word the plans had changed for the funeral and I felt cheated for not being about to perform. I felt guilt for not having a lesson, I felt guilt for being selfish over wanting to blame everyone and then guilt for an opportunity that was no longer there. A performance that would have been our last lesson together. Guilt, grief and then never wanting to miss an opportunity like that again with anyone. Maybe that was Kelvin’s last lesson for me after all.

Hearing Privilege Is One Many People Take For Granted

Many of us can’t hear.

One in eight Americans above the age of 12 has hearing loss in both ears, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

And while approximately 90 percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents, hearing people still lack an understanding and awareness of deaf accessibility challenges and the social isolation surrounding hearing loss.

In honor of the recent Deaf Awareness Week, people on Twitter spoke out about this important issue. Here are 30 powerful Tweets on #HearingPrivilege:

Gaping holes, confusion mar FCC’s data on political ad buys

An ad sponsored by the NRA-ILA attacking Indiana Senate candidate Evan Bayh (D).
An ad sponsored by the NRA-ILA attacking Indiana Senate candidate Evan Bayh (D).

By: Soo Rin Kim

Four years after it began requiring TV stations to upload their records of political ad sales to a central government website, the Federal Communications Commission maintains a recordkeeping system that makes finding out who an ad’s sponsor is feel like a treasure hunt.

In 2012, the FCC approved a rule requiring broadcast stations in the largest markets to upload the files showing who bought time for political ads, how much they paid and other details, saving journalists and others from having to visit to individual TV stations to get the info. The directive was gradually expanded and now includes most broadcast, cable, satellite and radio outlets.

But the victory for open government turned out to be a website that is searchable only by station call letters, channel number, facility ID number and similar data — not by sponsoring group, candidate mentioned and other terms that would make it easier to track who is running ads in particular federal races, and how much they’re spending.

The current filing system is “pretty useless” for the public, said Meredith McGehee, policy director at the Campaign Legal Center, which put out a report on the system’s shortcomings this week.

The political ad purchase records, also known as political files, were basically an unorganized pile of mostly non-machine readable documents with no uniform filing system.

Earlier this month, the Center for Responsive Politics launched an ad data tracking tool searchable by state and zip code (and soon, by other terms) to continue efforts started by watchdog groups and news outlets such as Sunlight Foundation and ProPublica when the data first came out.

But the federal agency responsible for the data still maintains only a vague “due diligence” standard when it comes to stations’ responsibility for ensuring the forms contain complete and accurate information.

How it shouldn’t work

Here’s an example: This particular ad-buy record of the National Rifle Association of America-Institute for Legislative Action–a 501(c)(4) that does not disclose its donors–from a Pennsylvania CBS affiliate, WHP-TV, is a short, casual thread of emails titled “NETWORK BUY.”

Figure1

The WHP-TV email thread seems like a version of a contract document as it shows dates and times of ads to be aired, but the it doesn’t include any information on the amount charged for the broadcast time, contrary to the law.

Under the Section 315 of the Communications Act, all broadcasters have to maintain a complete record of requests to purchase air time that includes ad buyer and content information. Forms drawn up by the National Association of Broadcasters usually contain the same information. Contracts and invoices generally detail dates and times ads were aired and amount paid to purchase broadcast time.

Most stations use the NAB form — but not all. And byond that, there is absolutely no standardization in filing.

Figure2

According to a Campaign Legal Center consultant’s analysis of the whole archive, broadcasters nationwide were using about 80 different forms to report the same type of information, making it difficult for anyone to sort the information.

It doesn’t look like change is coming soon. Asked whether the FCC is building a standardized filing system for ad buy information, an agency spokesperson replied it is looking into the costs and benefits of making the political files machine-readable and machine-searchable.

Under the current system, ads don’t have unique identification numbers, making it extremely difficult to match ads seen or heard on TV or radio to corresponding purchase records.

The NAB form for its buy from WHP-TV lists “National Rifle Association of America-Institute for Legislative Action” where it should have identified specific issues referenced in the ad.

With thousands of ad clips uploaded on YouTube by the NRA in the last few months, it is impossible to match the NAB form and the email contract with a specific ad.

An examination of the records shows this isn’t unusual. In fact, count yourself lucky if you find any responses to questions asking for candidates names, issues the ad may mention or names of the sponsoring organizations’ board members.

For instance, this NAB form shows that the conservative 501(c)(4) nonprofit One Nation has purchased TV time for “a message relating to any political matter of national importance,” but the document is missing required information on what the ad is about.

Figure 3

According to Campaign Legal Center’s report, several stations have also incorrectly labeled ads as not “of national importance” when the contrary was true.

In June 2015, multiple broadcasters in Wisconsin, including ABC affiliate WBAY-TV, CBS affiliate WFRB and Fox affiliate WLUK aired ads from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in support of Ron Johnson’s Senate race. The corresponding NAB form, on the other ad, fails to say the ad is a “matter of national importance.”

Not only does the federal law clearly require broadcasters to identify ads that target any election to federal office, the NAB form kindly reminds filers to mark a communication “a message relating to any political matters of national importance” if the ad references “legally qualified federal candidate,” “any election to Federal office” or a “national legislative issue of public importance.”

Campaign Legal Center was able to confirm this was a false filing only after checking with the Chamber of Commerce itself, something that would be extremely difficult for an individual to do; super PACs and 501(c) groups often don’t reveal their contact information to the public.

Sometimes, different stations put down completely different information for the same advertisement.

Last month, conservative dark money group One Nation spent about $ 1 million on airing an ad against the Obama administration’s Medicare overhaul across Missouri, including Kansas City, St. Louis and Columbia.

While Kansas City station KMBC clearly marked the program as a message relating to a political matters of national importance and listed Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) as the target of the ad on its NAB form, Columbia’s NBC affiliate KOMU and St. Louis’ Fox affiliate KTVI left the boxes empty.

Ad buyer information reported for One Nation ads are even more baffling. Several One Nation documents show that either broadcast stations or ad buying agents have been mixing up the nonprofit group One Nation with One Nation PAC, which has no relation to One Nation and has purchased no ads in 2016.

In this particular ad purchase record for WMUR in New Hampshire from last month, the contract document lists One Nation PAC as the advertiser but the NAB Form identifies One Nation as the organization that will use the broadcast time.

Figure4-1
The contract lists One Nation PAC as the advertiser.

Figure4-2
The NAB form lists One Nation as the organization to use the broadcast time.

As similar as they sound, there’s an important between the two. One Nation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(4) nonprofit that has a legal privilege to keep its donors secret. One Nation PAC, on the other hand, is a Carey Committee, a hybrid that can contribute to candidates as well as make independent expenditures. But the PAC must disclose its donors.

Vermont’s WCAX consistently lists One Nation as the advertiser in all its documents; but it uploaded all its One Nation filings under a folder named One Nation PAC on the FCC website.

WCAX General Sales Manager Nick Hasenecz, who files the reports for the station, told OpenSecrets Blog he wasn’t aware that the political action committee and the nonprofit group were separate entities. The station changed the folder’s name to One Nation after the conversation with OpenSecrets Blog.

But WMUR and WCAX aren’t alone in mixing up the two groups.

Because the database isn’t sortable, it’s difficult to check the whole archive, but an analysis shows that at least 10 different stations have listed One Nation and One Nation PAC interchangeably on their NAB forms, records of requests and contracts.

“The reason for this [missing and inaccurate information] is that the stations feel absolutely no pressure to fill in all the required information accurately,” McGehee said.

Under current rules, broadcast licensees have the sole burden of “due diligence” to report complete and accurate information. But because of the lack of precise definition for “due diligence,” stations can simply say they “asked” sponsors or ad-buying agencies for missing information but failed to get an answer.

An FCC spokesman said the agency conducts periodic audits to ensure compliance with its rules and also reviews complaints filed with the FCC.

The agency usually issues warnings to stations that have failed to comply with the rules. Last month, a Florida radio station WQBQ (AM) was fined $ 15,000 by the FCC for failing to include required information in a public file.

However, McGeehee says fines and warnings don’t happen often enough and aren’t sufficient.

When the Campaign Legal Center and Sunlight Foundation filed complaints against TV stations in 2014, the FCC responded immediately with letters of inquiry to each of the stations and issued a statement claiming to take the matters seriously. However, the complaints still have not been resolved.

“It seems reasonable to assume that FCC is not making reasonable effort to provide the important information to the public,” McGehee said.

The devil’s in the details

McGehee said easy access to accurate political ad buy information is especially critical since the Citizens United decision in 2010 because sometimes that’s the only way to track huge amounts of dark money spending in elections.

Federal Election Commission rules allow 501(c) groups to spend millions without disclosing their activities to the agency as long as the ads run more than 30 days before a primary or 60 days before a general election. Political nonprofits have deliberately avoided spending within the window to avoid filing reports with the FEC.

One Nation’s ad buy records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics show that the dark money group has spent tens of millions of dollars already this election — a fact that can be partially gleaned from its website.

One Nation has already spent at least $ 25 million in 2016, but the FEC’s database shows its outlays as a little over $ 200,000, because the only began reporting its spending to that agency two weeks ago.

The Campaign Legal Center, along with Common Cause, the Sunlight Foundation and the Benton Foundation, filed more complaints this week against several broadcasters across the nation that have failed to comply with the rules by leaving out important information or reporting false information on their political ad records.

In its new report, CLC called for building a machine-readable standardized filing system, updating the “due diligence” definition to clarify the responsibilities of broadcasters and requiring ad sponsors, under penalty of perjury to provide media outlets with accurate information.

Connect With The World Around You

“Wilderness is not a luxury but necessity of the human spirit.” -Edward Abbey

At a recent conference, I was shown a satirical commercial advertising what they called Nature Rx. “Are you feeling tired, irritable, stressed out?,” a young man asks from a rowboat, setting the stage to spoof the prescription drug ads we’ve gotten so used to seeing. “Well,” he continues, “you might consider nature.” The ad goes on to comically name the unique benefits of nature. “Nature’s been shown to decrease thoughts of worthlessness and increase libido.” At the end, when a soothing voice in a drug ad would typically rattle off a long list of unpleasant side effects that juxtapose the pleasant imagery, the narrator of Nature Rx says, “Side effects may include… a genuine care for yourself, other people and the world we live in, being more pleasant to be around, confidence, authenticity, and honesty.”

The joke works, because it states what we all know – that one of the most effective ways to feel better isn’t made in a factory or bottled in a jar. It doesn’t cost money or require prescriptions and insurance to acquire. We know, and science confirms, just how good nature is for us. We’ve felt firsthand the large impact just a little bit of green space can have on our mood and outlook. Nature has a unique power to quietly incite awe, serenity, and inspiration. And as people are spending more and more time indoors and in front of screens, numerous studies are revealing just how important nature is for our mental and physical well-being.

It’s no surprise that nature has many ways of benefiting our bodies. Studies show that exercising in green spaces had more health benefits than indoor exercise. It can help with healing, as hospital patients exposed to nature actually experienced quicker recoveries. Spending time in nature can even be a predictor of longevity.

Even less surprising are the rewards of nature to our minds. Studies have shown that just five minutes of activity in natural areas improve people’s self-esteem and mood. Other findings revealed that people living in closer proximity to green space had reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, and that spending time in nature decreased symptoms of dementia in individuals with Alzheimer’s. These are just a few examples of myriad ways nature boosts our mental and physical health.

One of the reasons, nature is so beneficial is that it allows us to feel more present in our own bodies. We tend to experience nature with our senses, drinking in sights, sounds and smells, feeling the earth on our feet and the breeze on our face. These are referred to as “bottom-up” experiences, which are more sensory. For example, with a bottom-up approach, if we see a flower, we may take in its beauty and smell. This is different from a “top-down” experience, in which we are more caught up in our heads. For instance, we may try to name or label the flower rather than experience it with our senses. When we take the latter approach, we start to feel more connected to the world around us and to the present moment, which is an important aspect of mindfulness. This helps us to achieve an inner sense of calm.

Getting out into the natural world encourages this type of interaction. As our mind unclutters, we tend to feel more active and alive. Plus, when we’re outside, we naturally tend to move more, which releases endorphins and further boosts our mood and energy level. These attributes benefit people of all ages, but have particular importance for kids. Children’s accessibility to green space is correlated with them being less impacted by stress, more physically active, and better able to focus and learn.

I could go on and on about the research behind the upsides of getting outside, but perhaps one of nature’s greatest assets is one we can all most relate to on an instinctual level – the way it inspires awe. Most of us can relate to the strange combination of overwhelming comfort and serene exhilaration that comes from witnessing a thing of natural wonder, vastness, or beauty. Experiencing these moments of awe enhances our well-being. In fact, the emotion of awe has been shown to make people feel more empathetic, trusting, generous and humble, which, in turn, improves their relationships.

These findings are inspiring to me personally, because they encourage us to not just connect with the world around us but with a part of ourselves that is more open, in tune, and in sync with how we think and feel. Connecting to nature can help us connect with ourselves, which naturally extends to the people around us. While, many of us struggle to slow down and take the time to make this connection, it’s nice to know that it’s available when we need it. Whether that means sitting in your garden, walking to that park, biking to the ocean, or driving to the mountains, whatever way we can get there, it’s worth it to find ways to get back to nature.

Tyson Chicken Recalled Over Possible Hard Plastic Contamination

Tyson Foods Inc. is recalling more than 130,000 pounds of chicken nuggets after customers complained about hard, white plastic in the meat, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday.

Affected products include 5-pound bags labeled “Tyson Fully Cooked Panko Chicken Nuggets” with a July 18, 2017 best-by date and 20-pound bags labeled “Spare Time Fully Cooked, Panko Chicken Nuggets, Nugget Shaped Chicken Breast Pattie Fritters With Rib Meat” with a July 18, 2016 production date.

The 5-pound bags were sold at Costco stores nationwide, while the 20-pound bags were sold to a single wholesaler in Pennsylvania, Tyson told HuffPost.

The plastic bits ranged in size from 21mm in length and 6.5mm in diameter, the USDA said, and “may have come from a round, hard plastic rod used to connect a plastic transfer belt.”

Customers in possession of either of the products may cut the UPC number and date code from the back of the packages and mail them to Tyson for a full refund.

This latest recall comes on the heels of a Sept. 23 incident, in which nearly 8,000 pounds of ham were recalled from Costco and Sam’s Club due to contamination with pieces of rubber.

The Yoga Mamas

The Yoga Mamas

They’re pregnant. They’re glamorous. They’re blissfully balanced. Or maybe that’s all just a pose… Laura is pregnant. She is stressed. She is exhausted. So she takes a deep, yogic breath, forgets about her husband, leaves her cramped apartment…and joins the Prada-clad celebrities and socialites at the most elite yoga center in the city. She figures she is a few tax brackets too short of fitting in. But she finds herself befriended by four huge-hearted, fabulously pregnant women who prove her wrong. Soon they are exchanging birthing plans and baby names and dirty secrets about their significant others. Everything is falling into place. Until she discovers one of them has a secret so big it just might burst their blissful yoga bubble. From The Yoga Mamas: Gigi led the way to the restaurant with her belly. At her side, Isla, too, thrust her bare mid-section defiantly out to the front, as if daring anyone to comment. Susan, Margaret, and I followed behind them, and the sidewalks opened up before us like the parting of the Red Sea. Five pregnant women in SoHo are an arresting sight. People scuttled out of our way. Across the street they stopped to look. We were loud, large, and in charge. I felt a surge of power. With my new, super-sized pals, I no longer viewed the streets as an obstacle course of aggressive shoppers and dog walkers. SoHo is ours, I thought with glee, as we approached the corner of West Broadway and Prince and burst throug

Rocalicious English Toffee Candy Bars

Rocalicious English Toffee Candy Bars

In the year 2001, I perfected an old time favorite recipe of English toffee. I call it “Rocalicious” because it is my version of Almond Roca and it is o so delicious! The toffee is made with the highest quality: all natural ingredients, no artificial flavors, and there are no preservatives added. Due to the fact that this delicacy is all natural, it is at its best when it is fresh. Therefore, we suggest it is stored in the freezer where it will not lose its crunchiness if left out. In the beginning the toffee was distributed as gifts to family and friends for the holidays and special occasions. It became surprisingly popular. Many people raved about how delicious Rocalicious is and suggested that I market this product and let the rest of the world taste “the best English Toffee they have ever tasted.” On account of an overwhelming demand and a steady stream of compliments concerning Rocalicious candy, I was motivated to venture out and start the business I now call, Paraiso Delicacies. Rocalicious candy is available in approx. 3 oz. candy bars. Great for any special occasion, the holidays as stocking stuffers, gifts, fundraisers, “Thank You’s”, “I Love You’s”, and party favors.

How to Be Less of an @$$hole Online (and in real life)

The presidential race is heating up and boiling over, protests are taking place across the country, and your favorite show didn’t win an Emmy. Tensions are getting high. And while tensions rise, so does the amount of “debate” that is happening online. But rather than having fruitful discourse, it seems more like we’re shouting at each other with memes.

It is healthy to disagree and even healthier to talk it out. But there are so many obstacles to keeping a discussion civil, especially online. So that we can retain our friendships, family and hopefully a bit of dignity, I’ve put together a few tips of how to be less of an @$ $ hole online (and in real life).

2016-09-26-1474918657-8747263-ScreenShot20160926at9.36.59PM.png

STOP IMMEDIATELY.

Before we go any further, there are some obvious things that, if you’re doing, you should stop immediately. Bullying and name-calling have no place in a civil conversation. Neither does hoping a woman be raped for her crime of retweeting a news story (or for any reason, while we’re at it).

2016-09-26-1474916111-5710878-14063910_10106615097738001_9000643653163556183_n.jpg

Threat of physical violence, use of slurs, or even just foul language are counter-productive and just plain rude.

2016-09-26-1474918380-6473593-14021562_10106614974964041_7647928825402172079_n.jpg

Stop rewarding rants.

While we’re on the topic of what to stop, let’s stop rewarding rants. Rants are a one-way shouting match and a lot sexier to share than a well-researched and articulated debate, but they don’t do us much good. I doubt anyone has ever changed their mind after or learned something new from EPIC rant DESTROYING XYZ!!! All these do is serve hype up the people who already agree with the speaker.

So if you find yourself saying or reading the phrases “mic drop” or “end rant,” it’s fair to guess that a healthy discussion is not about to break out in the comments section. There are a few people who can drop a mic on a topic in their field of expertise – Neil DeGrasse Tyson on astrophysics, Bill Nye on basically anything, Apple on getting people to “upgrade” to stuff they didn’t know they wanted, Olivia Benson on catching the bad guys while maintaining incredible decorum, Beyoncé on slaying – but you probably aren’t one of them.

Productive conflict comes from actually listening to each other, so maybe instead of dropping the mic, you could pass it?

2016-09-26-1474917092-4748524-neildegrassetyson00ba6becee66bc32.jpg

Stay on topic.

When discussing a topic, talk about that topic. Sometimes other topics are relevant. Most of the time they are not.

Bringing up irrelevant points is a distraction and gets everyone riled up about a bunch of stuff that no one was even talking about. And the distraction keeps us from getting to any semblance of progress.

Example: when we are talking about the latest victim of an executioner police officer, don’t get distracted. The victim wrote a negative Tweet 10 years ago or the weather was stormy or people were yelling. The question isn’t was force necessary or should the police have been involved in the first place. The question is, “was deadly force necessary?” The question is, “do police officers deserve better training to make sure they don’t have to carry the emotional baggage of making this decision with them for the rest of their lives?” Each case is unique, but don’t let yourself get pulled off target.

Listen (or read) before you respond (or share).

Reading the title of an article does not count as reading an article. Reading the headlines of the listicle does not count as reading an article. And if you have not actually read the article, suffice to say you are not qualified to respond to it or share it. That’s like giving a review of Marley and Me detailing how it’s such an uplifting and cute story that definitely doesn’t make every human with a soul sob.

If you haven’t read the whole thing or watched the whole thing, don’t comment on or share it. You have to be able to understand all of the arguments in it. Once you do, you are better equipped to have an actual exchange.

“When they go low, we go high.”

As much as I hate to admit it, not every one of the internet-going public is going to read and agree with this piece. Some people are going to break these rules and defy logic and go low. That’s their choice. How you respond is your choice. There is no real world shame in exiting an online exchange that’s taken a turn for the worse. Personally, I say do this in real life too.

This is especially important in arguments with friends and family. In 10 years, no one ever remembers that you wanted to go to a Mexican restaurant for dinner and they wanted Thai. But they do remember that little b!tch said I looked like a “f**king aardvark!”

We say things out of anger and hanger that we can’t take back, so if you notice it’s straying from civility and you can’t bring it back, get out!

Be skeptical of everything.

I am so sorry to be the one to break it to you, but everything published on the internet is not fact-checked. Just because it’s in quotes doesn’t mean someone said it, just because it’s in bold font over a scary pictures doesn’t mean it’s true and scariest of all, even if it IS true, it doesn’t mean you’re getting the full picture.

Being skeptical isn’t a character flaw. In fact, it shows character. This article gives a great overview of how to be a more skeptical news consumer. You should be asking yourself about the bias of the medium that has published the story, the journalist (or regular ol’ person) presenting it and the story itself. Is the story trying to achieve something? Does the media outlet have something to gain by publishing the story? Does the research team have incentive to present results in a certain way based on who funded the study?

A while ago a friend shared a piece that was like click-bait catnip to conservatives, the headline being about taxpayer money being spent on Obamacare for illegal immigrants. But when you read the story, it gave you an estimate of how much taxes had been spent for illegal immigrants, yet it failed to include the estimated taxes paid by illegal immigrants. Call me crazy, but that seems like an important part of that equation that this story was reporting.

So fact check and question your sources. Fact check and question your friends’ sources.

Freedom of speech protects you from prosecution, not consequences

You can cite the First Amendment when saying that you’re allowed to say something. But remember that it protects you from arrest, not judgment. So you don’t get to say inflammatory things and then say that no one can respond because you have the freedom of speech. That’s not how it works. So if you plan to say something in an argument for which the only defense is “I can say what I want,” consider a different approach.

2016-09-26-1474920435-180360-9c8beb0298d6200c0315ccc1bc8e6276.jpg

Opinions and facts are different

This feels like it should be unnecessary to call out, but based on what I see happen online, we have to talk about it. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion. But if that opinion is devoid of reason, it does not in fact have equal weight to actual data. When having a disagreement with someone, ask yourself if you’re arguing from opinion or from fact. This will change the way you approach the issue.

2016-09-26-1474916543-1022223-quoteyouareentitledtoyouropinionbutyouarenotentitledtoyourownfactsdanielpatrickmoynihan3680815.jpg

Acknowledge your bias

Along that same line is acknowledging your bias. We all have biases. Fact. Pretending like we don’t or that we can approach an argument immune to them is delusional. Along with acknowledging your bias, it is helpful to acknowledge your history that may influence your perspective. Being up front with that which frames your opinion and argument not only allows you to better articulate it, but also allows other people to better understand your points.

Realize that you aren’t, in fact, the center of the universe and probably not the foremost expert on the topic at hand

We get it. You watched every camera angle on a certain incident. You watch, like any good human, every marathon of Law and Order SVU that you can get your hands on. You feel like a detective who has thoroughly combed the evidence. But guess what, you don’t have all the information. Let the experts be experts. Of course, approach them with a healthy dose of skepticism (see above), but just because a subreddit has a theory doesn’t mean it has equal weight to a properly executed scientific study.

This also means that you should be open to discussion. When people offer an opinion or stance that is counter to yours, hear them out. Maybe ask for sources that you can read more to understand how they got there.

Hold your friends accountable

Even as hard as we try to wear our white hats, we’re going to mess up. But that’s what we have friends and family for. Call your friends and family out – they’ll appreciate (whether they know it or not) and it’s part of your job. Now, do it in a respectful manner because there is the possibility that you’ll make things worse. Maybe message them privately or talk about it in person.

But if your friends and family are being dicks and you don’t say anything, you’re a dick too.

Here’s the deal. We’re going to disagree. It’s even healthy. But you don’t have to be a d!ck about it. Let’s argue, but let’s be civil.

Trump And Clinton Debate Strategies That Can Make Anyone A Better Public Speaker

Public speaking is an anxiety-inducing task for most us, yet it’s also a necessary one, whether you’re a corporate CEO, a high school teacher or a presidential candidate. And like the rest of us, candidates stumble when speaking in public. Donald Trump’s tendency to speak off the cuff, for example, has long rattled his campaign aides, even as it’s also a source of his popularity. His numerous gaffes are infamous — from insulting women, war heroes and most minority groups, to taunting Hillary Clinton’s bodyguards to disarm.

Clinton’s biggest problem is of a different nature. She has struggled to overcome the persistent impression that she’s inauthentic, cold and distant. This is something that she and her team have worked on a great deal recently.

The candidates’ most important public speaking event is coming up: the first presidential debate on Sept. 26, which The New York Times calls “the most anticipated in a generation.” No wonder, as the perceived winner has generally gone on to win the election.

While presidential candidates face the same obstacles speaking in public as the rest of us, their stakes couldn’t be higher. Fortunately for Clinton and Trump, there are research-based strategies to become more effective orators — techniques that we can use too.

Debate Prep 101

As Trump and Clinton prepare for the debates, prominent media outlets have been evaluating what they need to do to win. Trump’s challenge is staying calm and on point, while Clinton’s is to convey emotions and avoid coming off as distant and isolated.

However, the most important thing for both candidates will be staying on top of their mental game. Both are trying to figure out ways to rattle their opponent and make them appear unworthy of the presidency.

Being mentally fit means dealing with the very common fear of public speaking, known as glossophobia. Yet public speaking is vital not only in politics but also in many careers, especially in business as one progresses into senior management and leadership positions.

Fortunately, a little work can go a long way in building confidence and addressing these fears. Research shows that those with some training in public speaking not only improve their own communication but can successfully teach others to give better speeches.

As a scholar of the role emotions play in public life, I teamed up with Patrick Donadio — a speech coach with over 30 years of experience providing leaders with useful presentation tips — to figure out the best strategies to address oratorical fears. Together, we came up with a set of research-informed techniques that anyone can use — including candidates for the highest office in the land.

Dealing with fear

In the first-ever televised presidential debate between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in 1960, the former appeared sweaty and nervous, while the latter looked calm and well-prepared.

On election day, JFK won the popular vote by a meager 0.2 percent. As 6 percent of voters claimed that the debates that year were the deciding factor, both Clinton and Trump would be wise to focus on managing any potential anxiety they might experience to avoid Nixon’s fate.

Sure, some anxiety is useful. It gets the adrenaline pumping and can give you energy and enthusiasm. Still, beyond that, if you don’t deal with the fear, you’re unlikely to do well no matter how hard you try. Intentional thinking strategies can help you manage your emotions – and the source of your fear.

It’s helpful to remember that your fear is not unique. There would not be as much extensive research on speech anxiety if it were. Knowing that this is a common phenomenon should relieve some of the fear, as it shows that you are not alone.

Clinton, for example, learned as a young woman to control her emotions, which has served her well. Now, however, she needs to do the opposite and overcome fears she may have showing her emotions to avoid being perceived as cold and aloof.

In turn, Trump may need to overcome any anxiety he may experience about not being sufficiently knowledgeable about the issues at hand.

Positive thinking wins the day

One way to do that is to boost your mood.

Give yourself a pep talk and psyche yourself up. Some people meditate, others pray, others listen to music and others jog. You can even curse to relieve the stress, as does President Barack Obama. There are many ways to elevate your mood.

Similarly, try positive thinking. Study after study has revealed that positive thinking helps address stress and anxiety and leads to better mental and physical health. In the context of speech-making, remind yourself that you know more about the topic than the audience does. You may not be a global expert, but, chances are, if you’ve done your research, you’ll know more than the vast majority of listeners.

This is probably not as big of a concern for Clinton, who is well-known as a policy wonk, but Trump is less practiced and so would be wise to give himself a pep talk before he walks on stage.

Take care of your body

Even if you use the strategies above, you may get a little nervous right before you get up to speak. You may also experience some excess energy. Don’t try to get rid of it all – believe me, you can’t – but you do want to eliminate some of it. Try “tense and relax” techniques.

For example, you could clench and relax your fists. Clench your fists really hard and then release them. If you notice a lot of tension in your neck, try shoulder shrugs. Push your shoulders up to your ears, hold them there for 10 seconds, and release. Former Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker, for instance, goes for a run before debates.

Finally, make sure you’ve had enough sleep, water and a good meal before giving your speech, and don’t forget to use the restroom. You don’t want to have an embarrassing moment like Clinton did during a debate when she was late coming back from a bathroom break.

Visual prep and practice

Most importantly, practice what you want to convey and how you want to convey it to gain more confidence and speaking exposure.

Studies show that gradual exposure to fear-inducing stimuli – known as exposure therapy — combined with relaxation techniques such as those described above is a safe and effective means of decreasing anxiety and building confidence.

Since it is especially helpful to simulate the exact environment in which your speech will take place, another way to do that is to try practicing in the same location you will be giving it and imagine what it will be like when you’re doing it live. Clinton and Trump, for example, may want to make a quiet visit to the Hofstra University auditorium, where the first debate will be held.

If doing that is impractical for you, try visualization, a strategy that doesn’t require you to leave your home. It involves visualizing yourself delivering a perfect speech in front of a rapt audience. This research-based strategy is widely employed in a similar way by top athletes and actors, such as Will Smith, Tiger Woods and Venus and Serena Williams.

Clinton’s background in previous political debates gives her an edge there, as she can easily imagine what it’ll be like more precisely than Trump.

Visualization doesn’t replace actual practice, of course. When you do practice, it’s still optimal to create an environment that simulates the situation well. For instance, if you’re planning to give a presentation to potential investors, ask friends or colleagues to role play and ask tough questions.

Both Clinton and Trump are engaging in thorough preparations. We know that Clinton is doing mock debates, which will likely serve her well during the event itself. We have no confirmation of whether Trump is doing the same.

The candidates also need to study each other as much as they study the content, since their goal is to win, not just to convey information. If your goal in public speaking is to outdo a competitor, as in a debate or contract bid, you must study that opponent and make sure that you take advantage of her/his weaknesses, while defending against her/his strengths.

From first speech to inaugural address

These tips, widely used by experienced speakers like Trump and Clinton, can help anyone minimize the impact of speaking anxiety. The sooner you get up in front of a group, realize that you have something important to say and say it, the sooner you’ll get rid of your fear.

Speaking is a skill that grows stronger with practice and weaker with disuse. The secret to improving your speaking skills is experience.

Remember, your first speech may be your worst speech, but you will keep getting better and less anxious going forward. After all, not even presidential candidates become excellent public speakers overnight.

How Fast Is Your Dog Aging?

All of us who love dogs are acutely aware that the lifespans of our canine companions are short – much too short. And while the years we spend with a beloved pet seem to fly by, dogs don’t just suddenly die when they reach a certain age. They grow older in stages just as we do, but at a tremendously accelerated rate compared to humans. Your four-legged friend may still look and act like a puppy much of the time, but there are age related changes taking place inside him despite his youthful good looks and high energy level.

The lifespan of a dog depends primarily on his size, breed (or breed mix), and health status. As a general rule, giant breed dogs are considered senior citizens at 5 years of age, and dogs under 20 pounds move into the range at about 7.

Vet, Pet Owner Perspectives Differ on When Dogs Enter Senior and Geriatric Stages of Life

If you’re surprised to learn the age at which your dog is considered senior or geriatric, you’re not alone. While most veterinary professionals consider all dogs seniors at 5 to 7 years of age, a majority of pet guardians believe 7 to 9 years is more accurate.

Owners of small dogs don’t consider them senior until around age 11, medium-sized dogs around age 9, and large and giant breed dogs around 7. This is slightly at odds with veterinary professionals, who consider small, medium, and large dogs senior at around 7, and giant breeds at around 5.

When it comes to using the G-word to describe patients, veterinary professionals tend to view small and medium dogs as geriatric around 11, large dogs around 9, and giant breeds around 7. Contrast that with dog parents, who feel small dogs aren’t geriatric until they reach age 13, medium dogs at 11 to 13, large dogs around 11, and giant breeds at around age 9.

So if you’re shocked to hear your veterinarian refer to your canine companion as “senior” (or, less likely, “geriatric”), try not to worry or take offense. Just like humans, as pets get older their healthcare needs change. Rest assured your vet isn’t so much labeling your dog as putting her in a special care category to insure her wellness exams cover potential age-related health challenges.

And this is a good thing, because for purposes of supporting her health, mental status and quality of life as she ages, it’s really not a bad idea to think about ways you can take extra-special care of your pet as she crosses the 7 year threshold and beyond.

Three Important Ways to Help Your Dog Age Gracefully

1. Provide physical and emotional comfort. Twice-yearly vet visits are very important for older pets, as they insure you and your veterinarian can stay on top of any physical or mental changes that may indicate an underlying disease process.

Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and physically active will help control arthritis and degenerative joint disease as he ages. Chiropractic adjustments, stretching, water exercises, and acupuncture can also provide enormous benefits in keeping dogs comfortably mobile in their later years. Regular massage can help keep your pet’s muscles toned and reduce the slackening that comes with aging.

There are also supplements that can be added to your dog’s diet to help maintain healthy tendons, ligaments, joints, and cartilage. These include glucosamine sulfate with MSM and eggshell membrane, perna mussel, omega-3 fats (krill oil), ubiquinol, supergreen foods like spirulina and astaxanthin, and natural anti-inflammatory agents (herbs, including curcumin, proteolytic enzymes, and nutraceuticals).

2. Provide high-quality dietary protein. Studies indicate dogs (and cats) need more protein as they age, not less, to maintain healthy lean muscle mass and good organ and immune function. The type of protein most dogs thrive on is whole, unprocessed, and raw or gently cooked.

3. Provide exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation. No matter your dog’s age, she needs daily exercise to be optimally healthy in body and mind. Your older dog obviously can’t exercise or compete at the same level as a youngster, but she still needs daily walks and other age-appropriate physical activity.

Your aging dog also needs regular social interaction with other pets and/or people. Much like her human family members, if your dog doesn’t stay active and involved in life, the world can become a confusing, even threatening place. She needs regular exposure to other pets and people, ideally through short periods of socialization and playtime in controlled situations.

Enriching your pet’s environment can help alleviate or forestall the mental confusion and decline of cognitive function that often come with age. Sticking to a predictable daily routine can help reduce anxiety and mental uncertainty. Puzzle toys and interactive games provide fun and mental stimulation.

Supplements that can help improve mental decline in aging dogs include S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), apoaequorin, vitamin B6, vitamin E, resveratrol, ginkgo biloba, and phosphatidylserine.
