HUFFPOST HILL – Obama Visits Disaster Area, Tells It To Stay The Hell Away From His Legacy

Russian hackers have breached the New York Times, giving intelligence officials in that country access to 14 unfinished style section pieces on people named Poppie. Bono once asked Hillary Clinton for help broadcasting to the International Space Station, really upending what we thought her private servers were capable of. And CNN livestreamed Mike Pence’s haircut, though that content will completely pale in comparison to next week’s Breitbart livestreaming of Steve Bannon being fit for a new skin suit. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016:

OBAMA BELATEDLY VISITS BATON ROUGE – Theodore Schleifer, Allie Malloy and Nick Valencia: “President Barack Obama toured flood-ravaged Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Tuesday, surveying wreckage that has also become a political football. ‘We are heartbroken by the loss of life,’ Obama said after seeing firsthand the damage in the state’s capital that has caused more than 106,000 residents and households to register for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. More than 60,000 homes were damaged, officials said, and 13 people were killed.” [CNN]

STEVE SCALISE THANKS TRUMP AND OBAMA: “Their presence contradicts Hillary Clinton’s unbelievable claim that her presence would be a ‘distraction’ from our recovery.”

CLINTON EMAILS SUGGEST FOUNDATION QUID PRO QUOLight quid pro quo, let’s say. Rosalind S. Helderman, Spencer S. Hsu and Tom Hamburger:  “A sports executive who was a major donor to the Clinton Foundation and whose firm paid Bill Clinton millions of dollars in consulting fees wanted help getting a visa for a British soccer player with a criminal past. The crown prince of Bahrain, whose government gave more than $ 50,000 to the Clintons’ charity and who participated in its glitzy annual conference, wanted a last-minute meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. U2 rocker and philanthropist Bono, also a regular at foundation events, wanted high-level help broadcasting a live link to the International Space Station during concerts. In each case, according to emails released Monday from Hillary Clinton’s time as secretary of state, the requests were directed to Clinton’s deputy chief of staff and confidante, Huma Abedin, who engaged with other top aides and sometimes Clinton herself about how to respond…The exchanges, among 725 pages of correspondence from Abedin disclosed as part of a lawsuit by the conservative group Judicial Watch, illustrate the way the Clintons’ international network of friends and donors was able to get access to Hillary Clinton and her inner circle during her tenure running the State Department.” [WaPo]

@AP: BREAKING: AP analysis: More than half those who met Clinton as Cabinet secretary gave money to Clinton Foundation.

‘FIGHT SONG’ IS TERRIBLE: WHY WON’T CROOKED HILLARY TELL THE TRUTH? – We never thought we’d find ourselves longong for “Born Free,” but here we are. Hunter Walker: “Before and after the Democratic nominee takes the stage at rallies, her campaign inevitably plays the 2015 pop hit ‘Fight Song’ by Rachel Platten. The catchy tune inspires hatred from some outsiders, but some Clinton campaign staffers insist they’ve grown to love it One aide referred requests for comment about the tune to campaign’s director of millennial media, Christopher Huntley, who suggested that it epitomizes Clinton’s values. ‘I actually love ‘Fight Song.’ It represents how Hillary Clinton will never give up, and she will do everything she can to make sure families to get ahead and stay ahead,’ Huntley said…’’Fight Song’ is an anthem. ‘Fight Song’ is a way of f***ing life,’ [another] staffer said. ‘It un-ironically brings me joy.’” [Yahoo News]

HuffPost Haircuts: Mike Pence (h/t: CNN, which literally livestreamed his goddamned haircut)

TRUMP LOSING SO BAD – Hillary Clinton is essentially tied with Donald Trump in red-tinted Missouri, according to a new poll.  Clinton garners 43 percent support to Trump’s 44 percent among likely Missouri voters in a Monmouth University poll that has a margin of error of 4.9 percent. While the survey is strikingly bad news for Trump ― Missouri went for the Republican in each of the past four presidential contests ― it’s just one survey. Others show Trump ahead, and HuffPost Pollster tracking shows the conspiracy theorist-in-chief maintaining his advantage in the state. [HuffPost]

BICKERING ‘BOUT BERNIE’S BONES – It’s getting in the way of wringing money out of people with ankle tattoos.  Edwards-Isaac Dovere and Gabriel Debenedetti: “Less than a week before its official launch on Wednesday, Bernie Sanders’ new political group is working its way through an internal war that led to the departure of digital director Kenneth Pennington and at least four others from a team of 15, and the return of presidential campaign manager Jeff Weaver as the group’s new president…People familiar with what occurred say that the board, which is chaired by the Vermont senator’s wife Jane, was growing increasingly concerned about campaign finance questions being raised over the last week. Their concern reached a breaking point, one person deeply involved with the Sanders world said, with a story last Friday from ABC News about how the group would handle the particular tax questions raised by having a senator so closely associated with a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization that has strict restrictions on its political work.” [Politico]

WHY CLINTON IS LAYING OFF THE ‘FLIP FLOPPER’ ATTACK - Plus, you know, her flip flops. Sam Stein: “[T]he main reason the Clinton camp has kept the ‘flip-flopper’ charge on the shelf is because their research shows that voters respond better to the idea that Trump’s motives are subconscious, rather than political. It was, the aide said, the difference between being opportunistic and being ‘unstable’ ― a word used by other Clinton officials in recent interviews to describe the GOP nominee. ‘The effectiveness is showing people who he is,’ explained Joel Benenson, Clinton’s chief strategist. ‘When you make bigoted and racist comments, attack war heroes, it shows your lack of character to the American people. And our job is to not let voters forget who this man is and how he has vilified so many different groups of people through this campaign. It is part of what makes him unfit and it is what are explaining in very simple terms.’” [HuffPost]

Bewildered billionaires: “An ABC News analysis of several of Mitt Romney’s top donors in 2012 revealed that they have so far declined to donate to Donald Trump’s campaign, joint victory fund, or super PACs backing him, instead shifting their contributions to congressional re-election campaigns. Hedge fund manager Paul Singer, an outspoken critic of Trump, donated $ 1 million to Restore Our Future, the super PAC that backed Romney in 2012, and $ 5 million this election cycle to Conservative Solutions, a super PAC supporting Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.” [ABC News]

WIKILEAKS REALLY GOING OFF THE RAILS – The organization is starting to feel a bit like the Stanford prison experiment of transparency groups. Raphael Satter and Maggie Michael:  WikiLeaks’ global crusade to expose government secrets is causing collateral damage to the privacy of hundreds of innocent people, including survivors of sexual abuse, sick children and the mentally ill, The Associated Press has found. In the past year alone, the radical transparency group has published medical files belonging to scores of ordinary citizens while many hundreds more have had sensitive family, financial or identity records posted to the web. In two particularly egregious cases, WikiLeaks named teenage rape victims. In a third case, the site published the name of a Saudi citizen arrested for being gay, an extraordinary move given that homosexuality is punishable by death in the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom. ‘They published everything: my phone, address, name, details,’ said a Saudi man who told AP he was bewildered that WikiLeaks had revealed the details of a paternity dispute with a former partner. ‘If the family of my wife saw this … Publishing personal stuff like that could destroy people.’” [AP]

RUSSIANS HACK NEW YORK TIMES - “President Putin, we have accessed Tom Friedman’s files, apparently Indian food vendors are the future.” Evan Perez and Shimon Prokupecz: “Hackers thought to be working for Russian intelligence have carried out a series of cyber breaches targeting reporters at the New York Times and other US news organizations, according to US officials briefed on the matter. The intrusions, detected in recent months, are under investigation by the FBI and other US security agencies. Investigators so far believe that Russian intelligence is likely behind the attacks and that Russian hackers are targeting news organizations as part of a broader series of hacks that also have focused on Democratic Party organizations, the officials said.” [CNN]

FOX NEWS TERRIBLE, LAWSUIT ALLEDGES –  Michael Calderone: “Former Fox News host Andrea Tantaros claims in an explosive new lawsuit that disgraced ex-network chairman Roger Ailes sexually harassed her and that high-ranking executives fostered a newsroom culture in which abusive behavior flourished.  ‘Fox News masquerades as defender of traditional family values, but behind the scenes, it operates like a sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like cult, steeped in intimidation, indecency and misogyny,’ the suit reads. Ailes was ‘the primary culprit,’ according to the suit, but ‘his actions were condoned by his most senior lieutenants who engaged in a concerted effort to silence Tantaros by threats, humiliation, and retaliation.’ Tantaros’ suit is the second leveled against Ailes, but the first to name the network itself and several current executives as co-defendants ― recently promoted co-president Bill Shine, general counsel Dianne Brandi, media relations chief Irena Briganti and executive vice president Suzanne Scott.” [HuffPost]

CLINTON CAMPAIGN OPENING OFFICE IN UTAH - Still unclear how much of a presence the Trump campaign has in Ohio. Dennis Romboy: “Seeing a rare opportunity to turn Utah blue, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will open a campaign office Tuesday in Salt Lake City. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has opened paths for Clinton to win the 270 electoral votes to become president, and maybe one of those paths runs through Utah, said Addisu Demissie, national voter outreach and mobilization director for Hillary for America…Donald Trump holds a 12-point lead over Clinton in Utah, according to the most recent local poll. But Utahns haven’t exactly embraced the billionaire businessman. Another poll showed they believe Clinton will win the election. Earlier this year, NBC News moved Utah to “lean Republican,” meaning the state is considered a competitive battleground in the presidential race.” [Deseret News]

BECAUSE YOU’VE READ THIS FAR - Here’s a bunch of guys singing at a goat.

HOW ANTONIO WEISS BROKERED THE ONLY ECONOMIC POLICY CONGRESS MADE THIS YEAR – Laura Barron-Lopez: “In 2015, as talk began to circulate on Capitol Hill of crafting legislation to help Puerto Rico manage its billions in debt, a hedge fund creditor paid a visit to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew’s new special counselor. The creditor told Antonio Weiss, who would become the point person on the island’s fiscal crisis, that the Puerto Rico government should simply eliminate some waste and cut a certain number of jobs to pay back its debt. Don’t bet on Congress helping, the creditor said. A year ago, the idea of lawmakers lifting a finger to help the beleaguered commonwealth was indeed a pipe dream. But Weiss knew better. He told the creditor that history indicated otherwise. When Americans’ livelihoods are threatened, he said, Congress moves in. Puerto Rico is home to 3.5 million Americans. Earlier this summer, after a year of haggling and revising, Congress passed legislation allowing the commonwealth to restructure its $ 70 billion in debt under the supervision of an oversight board. The bill didn’t satisfy everyone, but it is nevertheless the only piece of major economic policy to pass Congress this year ― a sign of Treasury’s persistence in the face of incredible gridlock.” [HuffPost]

Why The Humane Society President Changed His Mind About Working With Michael Vick

When NFL star Michael Vick pled guilty to running a dog fighting ring on his property in 2007, he sparked instant and intense outage across the country. Vick’s violence against pit bulls ― he also admitted to killing six to eight dogs by hanging or drowning ― infuriated animal lovers, and one activist who was particularly disgusted was Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle.

As Pacelle told Oprah during an interview for OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” he and the Humane Society were very vocal in their condemnation of Vick’s horrifying acts.

“We demanded his prosecution because what he did to the animals was barbaric. It was despicable,” Pacelle says.

Vick ended up suspended from the NFL and served 19 months in prison. Then, the disgraced athlete reached out to the very people who had written him off the moment his cruelty surfaced publicly.

“One of his people called me just before he was getting out of prison, and they said, ‘Michael would like to work with the Humane Society of the United States on its anti-dog-fighting work,’” Pacelle recalls.

Pacelle, who figured the request was little more than a PR move, said no and hung up the phone. “I thought, ‘OK, this guy wants to do a makeover. He wants to use me for that,’” he says.

But then, Pacelle began to reflect on himself and his mission.

“I said, ‘What am I about at the Humane Society?’ I mean, am I not about changing people for the better? That people who are doing the wrong thing start to move and do the right thing?” he says. “That’s what I do. I’m not just talking to people who are ‘of the faith.’ If I’m doing that, that’s just an echo chamber.”

Pacelle reconsidered Vick’s proposal not just for this reason, but for another powerful benefit as well.

“I also thought, ‘What if Michael Vick put boots on the ground, sort of talking to these kids in communities where they’re getting pit bulls for the wrong reasons … and told them about the evils of dog fighting?’” Pacelle says. “From a campaigner’s perspective, that’s going to allow me to reach tens of thousands of kids that I would not have an audience with.”

Ultimately, Pacelle adds, he hoped that working with Vick would also send a signal to society that would make people become more conscious of their own behaviors regarding animals, whether that’s through their fashion choices or eating habits.

“I’m sending a signal that we’re all sinners when it comes to animals,” he says.

“SuperSoul Sunday” airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.

Another insight from Pacelle:

New Study Pokes Hole In The Idea Of ‘Healthy Obesity’

The most current conventional wisdom among doctors and obesity researchers goes something like this: While people who are obese are at high risk for metabolic syndrome ― a constellation of symptoms that increase the risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and more ― there is also a significant group of obese people who are totally healthy and will remain healthy. This so-called “healthy obese” idea has been somewhat controversial ― a departure from decades of medical science that held obesity will, more often than not, had adverse effects on health.

Now new genetic research from scientists at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden suggests “healthy obesity” isn’t as clear-cut as it seems.

A genetic analysis showed that people who were obese but qualified as metabolically healthy still had fundamental differences in the way that genes in their fatty tissue express themselves. It’s unclear whether or not these genetic differences correspond to different disease risks, but the fact that genetic expression is altered on a cellular level suggests that there’s a lot more to healthy obesity than we think.

“Insulin-sensitive obese individuals may not be as metabolically healthy as previously believed,” said study author Mikael Rydén in a statement.

Genetic differences between obese and never-obese people

To see how genes expressed themselves in different types of people, Rydén recruited 65 people to participate in the study. Fifteen had never been obese, while the rest were obese people who were part of a clinical study on gastric bypass surgery and preparing for an operation.

Rydén and his team tested the obese patients for metabolic health by checking their insulin response; those who were sensitive to insulin are considered metabolically healthy, while the insulin-resistant are not.

Then the researchers took biopsy samples of abdominal white fat tissue from each participant for genetic sequencing.

Rydén found a big difference between the mRNA in samples from the never-obese and the obese. But abnormal gene expressions in biopsies from the group of obese participants were “very similar,” he said, with almost no difference between insulin-sensitive and insulin-resistant participants.

This suggests that obesity may drive this unique gene expression even in cases when it doesn’t drive insulin resistance, Rydén explained.

Healthy obese people are distinct from the never-obese

While the results don’t offer any clear takeaways for obese people, Rydén says his research could indicate that people who are obese but healthy may still need medical surveillance for obesity-related conditions. Further study is needed to determine what the gene expression differences actually mean for health.

Other researchers praised the study’s design, but agreed its implications are not yet clear. Dr. Caroline Kramer, an endocrinologist and obesity researcher at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada, pointed out that it remains to be shown whether or not the genetic differences in fat tissue are responsible for or even linked to metabolic differences in people of different weights.

Dr. Samuel Klein, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the Washington University School of Medicine, felt the study affirmed the current thinking on “healthy obesity” through the insulin response tests.

“It shows clearly that there’s a real subset of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obese people, but it may not be so easily explained by differences in fat tissue biology,” Klein said.

Why the controversy over healthy obesity is so important

More than a third of U.S. adults, or about 79 million people, are considered obese and at higher risk for conditions like Type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

But research that raises the possibility of metabolically healthy obesity has not yet agreed on a definition of what exactly metabolic health is, which is why studies estimate that anywhere from six to 75 percent of obese people may be metabolically healthy, according to a 2014 review on the issue. Harvard professor Dr. Frank Hu outlined four criteria for healthy obesity in a 2013 op-ed: a normal waist size, sensitivity to insulin, normal blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and good physical fitness.

But to be clear, most scientists agree that people who clock in at 30 or over on the body mass index scale are probably at risk for serious health conditions ― if not now, then perhaps down the road. The reason researchers are so interested in the concept of healthy obesity is that obesity doesn’t appear to be a one-size-fits-all condition. And the more we learn about how obesity affects different types of people, the more precise doctors can be when it comes to recommendations for patients who aren’t sure if they should try to lose weight or just keep exercising and eating well while maintaining their weight.

“Further exploration of metabolically healthy obesity could help us fine-tune the implications of obesity,” Hu told Harvard Health. “It supports the idea that we shouldn’t use BMI as the sole yardstick for health, and must consider other factors.”

Rydén’s study was published in the journal Cell Reports.

RNC pulls worst fundraising numbers in recent years

By: Bob Biersack

Even as talk in political circles has focused on the Trump campaign’s apparent reliance on the Republican National Committee for much of its basic voter mobilization effort in November, reports filed with the FEC over the weekend show the RNC having arguably the worst fundraising July in at least four presidential cycles.

The RNC reported receiving $ 27.2 million last month. This sounds like a reasonable total, but a look just below the surface shows it to be a big disappointment. Included among the $ 27 million figure was a $ 3.2 million refund from the Trump Make America Great Again super PAC, covering direct mail postage that the RNC had advanced the group in an earlier month. So those $ 3 million were actually raised months ago and while they can now be spent in the future, they don’t really count as “new revenue” for July.

The RNC total also includes $ 9.4 million in donations to three special accounts with limits on how the funds can be spent. These accounts are specifically intended to support the national convention, the RNC “building fund” for physical infrastructure, and a “recount” fund to pay legal expenses related to election challenges.

Removing these accounting adjustments and restricted funds leaves the RNC with less than $ 15 million in fully usable contributions received in July. The table below shows the breakdown of RNC receipts by category for each July from 2004 to 2016. In addition to across the board declines in sources of contributions compared to past presidential years, the RNC cash balance at the end of July was less than half of its comparable balance in the last three presidential campaigns.

2016-08-22-1471898946-8672656-RNCfundraising.jpg

Virtually every category of receipts shows a decline this year. Contributions from individuals where the amount given is less than $ 200 (the “unitemized” category) is less than half what it was in July of 2004, 2008 and 2012. There is a similar decline in direct contributions of larger amounts where specific information about the donor is included in the report. These itemized contributions total much less than July 2004 and 2008 and are even smaller than July 2012 when joint fundraising became much more important.

These joint fundraising efforts where the presidential campaign works together with the national party and state parties around the country are increasingly important, and the RNC total from those efforts also lags in July compared with 2012 and 2008. The Trump campaign has talked about huge joint fundraising successes, but neither the campaign nor the RNC has received all that much from this process so far comparatively.

People often look at cash balances and the end of the month to get a feel for how a committee is positioned for future spending. Here too, the RNC on July 31 was strikingly short of its own status on the same date in past campaigns. At a time when $ 70 to $ 90 million is the norm, the RNC finds itself with only $ 34.5 million in the bank.

In a campaign finance world where unlimited donations can be made to super PACs and other outside groups at any time, and where hundreds of thousands of dollars can be given by a single individual to national and state parties, a tough fundraising month doesn’t necessarily spell disaster for a national party committee. Time is running out, though, and the demands of a challenging national campaign don’t lend themselves to quick fixes. In this world, the RNC can’t really afford another month like July.

What No One Told Me About Following My Passion

Like much of my generation in America, I don’t have to worry about where my next meal will come from. I don’t have to worry about how I’ll get to work. I don’t have to worry about a safe, dry place to sleep.

So I worry about something else, with which much less of the world has the luxury of preoccupation: purpose. Some spend their days searching for food; I spend my life hunting meaning–full, but unsatisfied.

Most millennials’ basic needs have been met–a prerequisite for fulfilling our greatest potential. If we don’t make our lives meaningful, we will have dishonored and squandered our opportunity. Perhaps this responsibility explains our fixation with purpose.

We know what we want. The question is: how do we find it?

Hoping that international travel and novel experiences would infuse my life with meaning, I moved to Canada when I graduated college. There I learned, as I conclude in my essay The Myth of Wanderlust, “you can’t drive to purpose.”

So I returned home and pursued my lifelong passion of writing. For the last two years, I’ve followed a self-authored, step-by-step plan to successfully discovering, integrating and making money from my passions. A marketing position, an editing role and six months of self-employment later, I realized you can’t write to purpose, either.

Passion, I’ve learned, does not equal purpose.

Why?

Here’s a synopsis of the 8000 words I initially spewed on this question:

Passion, the way many millennials have come to define it, is self-oriented. Passion is “a strong inclination toward a self-defining activity that one loves, values, and in which one invests a substantial amount of time and energy,” explains one study published in Self and Identity.

Purpose, on the other hand, is other-oriented. One Stanford study found that individuals with meaning mindsets “seek connections, give to others, and orient themselves to a larger purpose.”

Modern passion is pleasure-oriented. One influential study on passion defines it as “an autonomous internalization that leads individuals to choose to engage in the activity that they like.” In other words, passion’s answer to “Why are you doing this?” is “Because I like it.”

But meaningfulness, sums the Stanford study, sometimes involves “feeling bad”.

Passion is short-term. Though we tend to assume it’s lifelong, passion changes more than we anticipate because we change more than we anticipate. As Terri Trespicio observes in her TEDx Talk, ”Passion is not a plan. Passion is a feeling, and feelings change.”

Purpose is hardy. Gritty individuals, explains one study, prioritize long-term goals. This long-term perspective, another study notes, helps give “more weight to meaning than pleasure” and solidifies self-control.

I don’t regret following my passion. In fact, I still endorse my strategy. Passions help us understand who we are and what we want. They bring vitality and joy to our days. But following your passion is a deceptively slow, uncertain way to purpose.

If I could tell myself anything three years ago when I graduated college, it would probably be this:

“Follow your passion, sure. But don’t expect it to produce your purpose.”

I help 1000+ ambitious millennials find their professional purpose with a research-packed weekly newsletter. Want in? Subscribe.

Here’s Another Reason To Be Worried About Bottled Water

The bottled water industry is in the midst of a banner year.

Bottled water sales are set to outstrip soda sales in the U.S. for the first time since the Beverage Marketing Corporation began tracking the industry in the 1970s, according data the firm released earlier this month.

On one hand, this could be viewed as a public health victory, especially since industry leaders say rising health concerns linked with the consumption of sugary, calorie-laden sodas are largely driving the trend.

But there is also a more potentially disturbing explanation for bottled water’s surge in popularity, these same leaders say: Consumers are fearful of what’s coming out of their taps, thanks to public health crises like the ongoing situation in Flint, Michigan, and America’s immense and underfunded water infrastructure challenges more broadly.

Critics of the bottled water industry point out that these increased sales represent the privatization of something that has generally been recognized as a public good. There is an incredible amount of waste generated along the way, and plenty of thorny questions about the ethics of water sourcing come up.

One of those critics is Gay Hawkins, a professor at Western Sydney University and the co-author of the 2015 book Plastic Water: The Social And Material Life of Bottled Water.

There is “no good news” in letting beverage companies ― like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, which each benefit from the rise in sales through their own water brands — take control of America’s drinking water, Hawkins argues.

The Huffington Post recently spoke with the professor about what can be done.

Were you surprised to see this recent news that bottled water sales are surging past soda in the U.S.?

No, that is playing out everywhere. The way the beverage companies see it, there is a major attack on their market for selling dangerously oversweetened beverages. The way in which they respond to that is the introduction of a substitute market, which is water. All of this sort of implicitly says, OK, if you’re not reaching for a Coke, reach for a branded water instead. They don’t want to see their overall market share decline, so they’ve had to create other beverage lines that will cope with this.

I think it’s depressing to the extreme to think that there could be any positive hype about people reaching for water rather than Coke if you acknowledge the fact that they’re still reaching for a plastic bottle. If you want access to drinking water, you shouldn’t have to access that through a single-use [polyethylene terephthalate, the most common type of plastic used in water bottles] bottle, which is creating phenomenal waste problems around the world. If we’re committing to public health, what states and governments should be doing is intensifying people’s access to free water in public. We should see more water fountains everywhere, and they should be clean and readily available all over urban space. They should really be providing a genuine alternative to sweetened beverages.

Situations like Flint are contributing to this. Recently, a new report found that 6 million Americans are dealing with PFOA and PFOS, industrial chemicals, in their water. There are justified reasons for people to be suspicious of their tap water, so how does that factor into this?

This is a tragedy, a failure of governing and a failure of the state. Flint should be ashamed of itself for taking taxes from people and not being able to meet its basic minimal obligation — to provide its people with the means of life which is safe public water, of course.

Beverage companies see a state failure as a market opportunity. If people are losing trust in public water, they say, “Here is our chance to insert branded bottled water into this state of uncertainty and make people think this is the only water people can trust.” I think this is directly connected to the fact that beverage companies are creating doubt and manipulating public disputes about water quality to their own advantage.

Let’s face it, it’s pretty hard for a beverage company to turn water into water. We’re getting access to water in a cheap, sustainable way through a massive, networked infrastructure of pipes. Sure, that costs a lot of money to provide, but it’s nothing like the kind of money that goes into making single-use bottles. You have to do an immense amount of work to turn water into a commodity. Exploiting insecurity and doubt about existing forms of supply and generating incredible branding strategies that create all these new qualities for water — “untouched,” organic and all the other bullshit — help create this brand platform that turns water into something that radically differentiates it from the ordinary old stuff coming out of the tap. But really, it’s still just water.

How does the U.S. compare to other countries in terms of this? Situations like Flint aside, why are we leading the way on this trend?

I don’t want to be an expert on the U.S., but it’s pretty hard to promote government as a good thing there. It’s crazy the kind of anti-government sentiments I’ve heard from the U.S. All of us couldn’t function every day without government. Roads, traffic lights, being able to turn on the tap — all these things that we take for granted connect us as a community.

Government creates and maintains the common interest of the greater good. Water is at the heart of that and is something that should not be privatized. It’s something that we need to share and we need to collaborate in protecting. I think we need a much more vigorous defense of the public good and why governments matter, and why governments are central to protecting the commons, and water is part of the commons.

Possible solutions like tougher environmental and water safety regulations and improved funding for infrastructure are complex issues that can bogged down in politics. What can we do about this now?

There are some fantastic campaigns against bottled water, very impressive citizen-led campaigns to defend public water and demand access to water fountains in public, demanding that water supplies including aquifers or surface water be protected in the common interest. There’s a whole lot of strategies communities can engage in, but governments really need to step up here and really need to understand they’re in the business of providing services to populations and water supplies are the first one they need to insure and get right.

Outsourcing this and letting beverage companies step in and appear as the new model for infrastructure is a very depressing and troubling scenario. Governments need to realize that if they hand over their water supply to a beverage company, they’re left with managing the externalities of that market — clearing up and taking away those discarded bottles and managing the hard waste generated from that is incredibly unsustainable and more expensive than providing proper infrastructure in the first place.

Some government entities, like Baltimore schools, are coming to the conclusion that given concern about lead or other issues, using bottled water instead of repairing a system is cheaper. What do you make of that?

That’s a really disturbing picture, but it’s one that beverage companies would love because they are now becoming the trusted infrastructure. If you let the public infrastructure become run down to the point where the amount of money to fix it and improve it is astronomical, that failure of the state just sets this opportunity for others to step in.

Do you think the bottled water boom will continue in the immediate future? Or could we be heading toward a bust?

I thought a couple of years ago there was evidence to show that bottled water was declining in European markets as a direct result of some really powerful activism. The marketing of refillable portable bottles certainly had an impact. The other thing that happened was a lot of public or semi-public water infrastructures started re-branding and asserting to their populations that they are providing safe water that’s cheap and universally accessible. They had to engage in branding to compete with Coke and Pepsi, but it was quite successful in rebuilding trust in public water.

It worked in Europe, where there is still a lot of commitment to government. In the States, I don’t really know. If people don’t have that experience of accessing safe water when they turn on the tap, I can’t blame them for looking after their own interest and trusting a beverage corporation. But the only way you could address this is to engage in good governance of water and to say to your population your water is safe, we are investing in infrastructure, so celebrate what a shared water economy can do. It’s celebrating what we all have in common, and that is the need for water.

Clinton’s Fragile Lead

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. In 1969, the Cubs had a 9 1/2 game lead over the New York Mets in the middle of August, but ended the season 8 games behind the Mets after losing 17 of 25 games to close the season.

The average of the latest national polls shows Clinton with about a 5 percent lead over her Republican opponent, Donald Trump. But Trump has had a rough two weeks, and has now shaken up his campaign staff. Gone is campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was brought in to make the campaign more professional. On Tuesday, Trump brought on Breitbart News executive chairman Steve Bannon as campaign CEO, and Kellyanne Conway as campaign manager.

In an article last October, a Bloomberg Businessweek headline read, “This Man Is the Most Dangerous Political Operative In America.” Bannon is a former Goldman Sachs banker and documentary maker who took over Breitbert, a conservative website created in 2007, when its founder, David Breitbart, died suddenly in 2012. “The recruitment of Bannon will release Trump to be the outsider that won a primary in historic fashion,” wrote reporter Joseph R. Murray in The Hill. “Bannon will encourage Trump to be the very person the (Republican National Committee) warned against and, for that reason, Trump stands to win because this election is not about Republicans versus Democrats; it is about outside change versus insider corruption.” Murray’s piece was entitled, “Trump’s recruitment of Bannon means war and everyone knows it.”

Conway is a long time Republican operative and Trump friend. Conway earlier ran a PAC for Texas Senator Ted Cruz. She is a lawyer, a mother, and founded The Polling Company in 1995, which advised many Republicans, especially on women’s issues. Conway is an effective communicator who will work to focus Trump and his campaign on issues. She reportedly was influential in getting Trump to express regrets last week for derogatory comments he has made in the past, although he was not specific.

Bannon and Conway will work forcefully to turn voters against Clinton. But reining in Trump may be difficult. And already he has taken many controversial positions that may be hard to clean up. For instance, last October Trump said he would have a deportation force that would remove undocumented immigrants from the United States. On Sunday, Conway said the creation of a deportation force by a Trump administration was “to be determined.” A softening of Trump’s immigration position, which played a huge role in getting him the nomination, could alienate some of is most ardent supporters.

Nonetheless, Clinton has lots of perceived baggage. She has been dogged by scandals most of her public career. Most recently, the Clinton Foundation has come under intense scrutiny for possibly trading favors for donations during Clinton’s term as secretary of state. Sunday’s New York Times reported that, “The Clinton Foundation has accepted tens of millions of dollars from countries that the State Department — before, during and after Mrs. Clinton’s time as secretary — criticized for their records on sex discrimination and other human-rights issues.” Because of the controversy, former President Bill Clinton announced Thursday that the organization would not longer accept foreign or corporate donations should his wife be elected in November. But that will do little to quiet critics. Several leading Democrats have called for the foundation to immediately stop taking donations.

Of course, the controversy surrounding Clinton’s use of a private email server while at the State Department continues to trouble her campaign. In July, FBI director David Comey recommended against prosecuting Clinton, but called her use of a private email server “extremely reckless.” Last week the bureau turned the case documents over to Congress, and Republicans are pressing that she be charged with perjury.

Clinton has maintained a strong lead in recent polls, and has been pulling ahead in several key battleground states. She is also doing well with women and minorities. But likely voters view neither candidate favorably. Clinton is most vulnerable on the trust issue, although Trump is as well. And more that 60 percent of all Americans surveyed believe the country is on the wrong track.

For sure, the team of Bannon and Conway will attack Clinton mercilessly on trust in an effort to disqualify her from being president while helping to improve Trump’s position in the polls by keeping him “on message” as the candidate for “change.” Expectations for Trump doing so are low, so any improvement can build momentum. Bannon and Conway know the media prefers a horserace.

This year the Cubs are dominating major league baseball, and they are currently the favorites to win the World Series. But long-suffering Cub fans remember 1969, including Hillary Clinton. She must do a better job of winning over uncommitted voters, and with addressing her weaknesses, in order to prevail in November.

Health Official Warns Zika Could Spread Across U.S. Gulf

Aug 21 (Reuters) – One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach.

The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome.

Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of Miami-Dade County in Florida. Miami’s Wynwood arts neighborhood last month became the site of the first locally transmitted cases of Zika in the continental United States.

“It would not be surprising we would see additional cases perhaps in other Gulf Coast states,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the allergy and infectious diseases unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News.

Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana – which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged – has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state.

“There’s going to be a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

On Friday, Florida Governor Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told pregnant women they should avoid the trendy area and suggested those especially worried about exposure might consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County.

NIH’s Fauci on Sunday said the conditions of most of the country make it unlikely there would be a “diffuse, broad outbreak,” even though officials need to prepare for that possibility.

He compared it with diseases such as Dengue, which is endemic in certain tropical and subtropical regions of the world but rarely occurs in the continental United States. In Miami’s Wynwood area, experts have seen “substantial” knockdowns of mosquito populations.

Still, its containment is more complicated because Zika can be sexually transmitted, Fauci said.

“This is something that could hang around for a year or two,” he said.

The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

The study examines ways of improving the learning progress made by students in dealing with the problems posed by modal semantics in translation from Danish into German. Major concerns are translation theory and didactics, classification models for modal verb systems, and neurolinguistic aspects. The analysis of two text corpora shows that better results were achieved by a test group working with a teaching scheme based on a broader range of didactic variation. The volume is of interest for scholars working in the fields of translation theory and didactics, modality, corpus linguistics, neurolinguistics, comparative linguistics, language philosophy, and – more generally – Scandinavian and German studies.

Jerry Falwell Jr. Seriously Compared Trump To Winston Churchill

Campaign leadership shakeup? Check.

Sort-of apology? Check.

Offensive outreach speech aimed at African-Americans and delivered to a white audience? Check.

The struggling presidential campaign of Donald Trump has tried many things in recent days to revive the GOP nominee’s dimming chances against Hillary Clinton.

Now, we can add a prominent surrogate’s comparison of Trump to legendary British prime minister Winston Churchill to the growing list of Hail Mary passes by the campaign and its allies.

“We need a leader with qualities that resemble those of Winston Churchill, and I believe that leader is Donald Trump,” evangelical Christian leader Jerry Falwell Jr. wrote in an op-ed in The Washington Post on Friday. “As Churchill did, Trump possesses the resolve to put his country first and to never give up in a world that is increasingly hostile to our values.”

The analogy to Churchill comes not from anything Trump has done yet, but from the strength with which Falwell believes Trump will confront the global jihadist terror threat, just as Churchill stood up to the Nazis.

Falwell, president of Liberty University, a conservative Christian institution in Virginia, was an early endorser of Trump. In the aftermath of the terror attack in San Bernardino, California, in December, Falwell said that if more people carried guns, “we could end those Muslims.” (Falwell later clarified that he meant Muslims who carry out acts of terror, rather than all Muslims.)

In other ways, Falwell’s Washington Post op-ed reads more like a typical conservative indictment of Democratic foreign policy. Just as Trump is the “Churchillian leader we need,” in Falwell’s telling, President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Clinton are, conversely, the “Neville Chamberlains of our time” for brokering a deal with Iran to eliminate its nuclear weapons program. (Chamberlain was Churchill’s immediate predecessor, best known for trying to appease German dictator Adolf Hitler with the cession of a portion of Czechoslovakia.)

Many conservatives have called the Obama administration’s Iran accord a foolhardy, Chamberlain-esque deal with the devil. The White House, nonproliferation experts and even many top Israeli security officials argue that while it is imperfect, it is the best shot at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

But Falwell clings to the hardline conservative myth that Republican leaders in Congress could have done more to stop Obama’s foreign policy.

“All of this was enabled by a feckless establishment Republican Congress,” he wrote.

In fact, congressional Republicans are limited in their ability to obstruct Obama by the Constitution’s separation of powers. They are able to hold up legislation related to domestic policy proposed by the president, but as commander in chief, he can negotiate certain foreign agreements and prosecute counter-terrorism efforts as he sees fit.

In his Friday op-ed, Falwell also urged conservatives to vote for Trump out of concern for the liberal Supreme Court justices Clinton would get to appoint.

“If Clinton appoints the next few Supreme Court justices, not only will the Second Amendment right to bear arms be effectively lost, but also activist judges will rewrite our Constitution in ways that would make it unrecognizable to our founders,” he wrote.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

9 Habits Of Highly Emotionally Intelligent People

2016-08-18-1471553223-9662730-9HabitsofHighlyEmotionallyIntelligentPeopleHP.jpg

When emotional intelligence first appeared to the masses, it threw a massive wrench into what many people had always assumed was the sole source of success–IQ.

How much of an impact does emotional intelligence (EQ) have on your personal and professional success? The short answer is: a lot! It’s a powerful way to focus your energy in one direction with a tremendous result.

Emotional intelligence is the “something” in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results. Emotional intelligence is made up of four core skills that pair up under two primary competencies: personal competence and social competence.

2016-08-18-1471553284-8906503-9HabitsofHighlyEmotionallyIntelligentPeopleHP2.jpg

Personal competence comprises your self-awareness and self-management skills, which focus more on you individually than on your interactions with other people. Personal competence is your ability to stay aware of your emotions and manage your behavior and tendencies.

  • Self-Awareness is your ability to accurately perceive your emotions and stay aware of them as they happen.
  • Self-Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions to stay flexible and positively direct your behavior.

Social competence is made up of your social awareness and relationship management skills; social competence is your ability to understand other people’s moods, behavior, and motives in order to respond effectively and improve the quality of your relationships.

  • Social Awareness is your ability to accurately pick up on emotions in other people and understand what is really going on.
  • Relationship Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions and the others’ emotions to manage interactions successfully.

Despite the significance of emotional intelligence, its intangible nature makes it very difficult to know which behaviors you should emulate. So I’ve analyzed the data from the million-plus people TalentSmart has tested in order to identify the habits that set high-EQ people apart.

1. They’re relentlessly positive. Keep your eyes on the news for any length of time, and you’ll see that it’s just one endless cycle of war, violent attacks, fragile economies, failing companies, and environmental disasters. It’s easy to think the world is headed downhill fast. And who knows? Maybe it is. But emotionally intelligent people don’t worry about that because they don’t get caught up in things they can’t control. They focus their energy on directing the two things that are completely within their power–their attention and their effort. Numerous studies have shown that optimists are physically and psychologically healthier than pessimists. They also perform better at work. Remind yourself of this the next time a negative train of thought takes hold of you.

2. They have a robust emotional vocabulary. All people experience emotions, but it is a select few who can accurately identify them as they occur, which is problematic because unlabeled emotions often go misunderstood, which leads to irrational choices and counterproductive actions. People with high EQs master their emotions because they understand them, and they use an extensive vocabulary of feelings to do so. While many people might describe themselves as simply feeling “bad,” emotionally intelligent people can pinpoint whether they feel “irritable,” “frustrated,” “downtrodden,” or “anxious.” The more specific your word choice, the better insight you have into exactly how you are feeling, what caused it, and what you should do about it.

3. They’re assertive. People with high EQs balance good manners, empathy, and kindness with the ability to assert themselves and establish boundaries. This tactful combination is ideal for handling conflict. When most people are crossed, they default to passive or aggressive behavior. Emotionally intelligent people remain balanced and assertive by steering themselves away from unfiltered emotional reactions. This enables them to neutralize difficult and toxic people without creating enemies.

4. They’re curious about other people. It doesn’t matter if they’re introverted or extroverted, emotionally intelligent people are curious about everyone around them. This curiosity is the product of empathy, one of the most significant gateways to a high EQ. The more you care about other people and what they’re going through, the more curiosity you’re going to have about them.

5. They forgive, but they don’t forget. Emotionally intelligent people live by the motto “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” They forgive in order to prevent a grudge, but they never forget. The negative emotions that come with holding onto a grudge are actually a stress response. Holding on to that stress can have devastating health consequences, and emotionally intelligent people know to avoid this at all costs. However, offering forgiveness doesn’t mean they’ll give a wrongdoer another chance. Emotionally intelligent people will not be bogged down by mistreatment from others, so they quickly let things go and are assertive in protecting themselves from future harm.

6. They won’t let anyone limit their joy. When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When emotionally intelligent people feel good about something that they’ve done, they won’t let anyone’s opinions or accomplishments take that away from them. While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain–you’re never as good or bad as they say you are.

7. They make things fun. Emotionally intelligent people know exactly what makes them happy, and they constantly work to bring this happiness into everything they do. They turn monotonous work into games, go the extra mile to make people they care about happy, and take breaks to enjoy the things they love no matter how busy they are. They know that injecting this fun into their lives fights off stress and builds lasting resilience.

8. They are difficult to offend. If you have a firm grasp of whom you are, it’s difficult for someone to say or do something that gets your goat. Emotionally intelligent people are self-confident and open-minded, which creates a pretty thick skin.

9. They squash negative self-talk. A big step in developing emotional intelligence involves stopping negative self-talk in its tracks. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that–thoughts, not facts. You can stop the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says by writing them down. Once you’ve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you will be more rational and clear-headed in evaluating their veracity. You can bet that your statements aren’t true any time you use words such as “never,” “worst,” and “ever.” If your statements still look like facts once they’re on paper, take them to a friend and see if he or she agrees with you. Then the truth will surely come out.

Bringing It All Together

Unlike your IQ, your EQ is highly malleable. As you train your brain by repeatedly practicing new emotionally intelligent behaviors, your brain builds the pathways needed to make them into habits. Before long, you will begin responding to your surroundings with emotional intelligence without even having to think about it. And as your brain reinforces the use of new behaviors, the connections supporting old, destructive behaviors will die off.

Which strategies are your favorites? Please share in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Backpacks And Back Pain

With school just starting and the kids abandon the playground and return to the classroom with an emphasis on giving a sound education, children are being given a heavy workload now more than ever. This has translated into more books and accessories, greatly contributing to the normalcy and reliance on carrying backpacks. Despite their usefulness, backpacks can cause back pain if overloaded or worn improperly.

2016-08-20-1471714844-4735983-Untitled.png

To understand how heavy backpacks contribute to back pain, it’s important to look at the composition of the back. Your child’s spine is composed of 33 bones called vertebrae with discs between them that act as natural shock absorbers. When a heavy backpack is incorrectly placed over your child’s shoulders, the weight’s force can pull your child backwards. Usually, children counteract this force by arching or bending forward at the hips causing the spine to compress unnaturally, contributing to neck, shoulder and back pain.

2016-08-20-1471714971-3849456-1.png

The best way to prevent lower back pain is by not allowing your children to overload their backpacks. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, children should limit their backpack weight to between 10 and 15 percent of their body weight. Backpacks weighing more than this are too heavy to maintain a standing posture. This weight causes children to lean forward, affecting the natural curve in the lumbar and lower back regions. Overloading backpacks can cause a variety of problems.

“Kids these days think backpacks are moving libraries,” carrying heavy weights far distances to school and between classes without breaks can cause a variety of back problems. Kids need to feel healthy so they can keep up with their schoolwork.”

Another problem with backpack use is wearing them improperly. Here, a common problem is wearing backpacks over only one shoulder. This uneven distribution of weight causes children to compensate by leaning to one side. The frequent imbalance causes muscle strain. The problem can be exacerbated if backpacks have tight or narrow straps, as they can interfere with circulation and nerves.

There are, however, some simple ways to prevent your child from developing back pain. First, it’s important to monitor the weight of children’s backpacks to ensure they are not overloading them. Second, purchase a backpack with wide, padded straps to distribute the load over the shoulders evenly. Backpacks that have waist and additional shoulder straps may also prove beneficial in transferring the load to the hips and preventing slouching. Lastly, it’s important to concentrate the bulk of the weight closest to your child’s body in the middle of the back. This will help your child achieve better posture and balance, while preventing possible falls.
